I recently picked up an old tree farmer with a similiar story I'm going through and doing the same stuff. My neighbor is an "old timer" he told me that anything that takes gear oil drain it put some diesel back in it and if it's the differentials run it a couple hundred feet, the winch run it in and out a few times. He said it helps to clean all the crap off stuff and it will function as a lubricant for a few minutes to help clean it, then drain it and fill with 90w. Mine is a 353 detroit and a new process transmission as well. I'm the furthest thing in the world from a mechanic but I'm figuring stuff out. Make sure you have you kill switch (not ignition) working in case it runs away, I took some tie wire around the flap next to the intake and ran it through a small hole in the dash with a loop in case I need to use it.

Rick, I googled the transfer case oil level plug and it said it's under the PTO on the left side. I don't how accurate this info is.
