Jazz Drum Set Soloing 101: Basic Concepts

Күн бұрынHere is a video about drum set soloing in a Jazz context. Trading 8's (or 4's) is the main subject demonstrated. I also talk about how to develop a technical vocabulary using notated rhythms for developing dexterity as well as a few different ways to develop a motif. This is an overview and I will publish several more videos on this subject getting more in depth about creating interesting open solos, trading choruses, soloing over song form and soloing over ostinatos in several genres.
The cymbals are all 1950's K Zildjian with a Paiste 22" swish.The drums are Gretsch Centennial series: 18"x14" bass,10",12",14" toms and a 14"x7" snare.
There are calf heads on the snare drum and bass drum.

Excellent playing,always .This can be applied to the melody and will work beautifully. Some parts remind me of Ralph Peterson, God bless him.

Hi Alex I talk about soloing in my recent left foot clave video. You may want to also watch the timbale soloing video as that is pretty much the same concept as the drum set. I also play a solo in the beginning and ending of many of my drum set Afro Cuban videos. Check that playlist.

High Rick. Simply my favorite drummer. what component set up do you use for your drums and music in your headphones. Also can you do headphones stereo speakers togeather. I think doing your stuff with your set up is why we watch. Thnx. Want to buy the same. I have drum mics.

Hi I usually just have the click track in the phones. No drums. I can hear the drums just fine. If I am playing to music I have just the music in there, again no drums. I am only using one stereo overhead mic for this video. It's very simple.

Do you find that moeller technique helps with accenting and fluidity in this setting? I've been studying it and find it helpful

thankx rick for this important lesson. for sure what i struggle with. what is the key when using these exercises in musical context not to sound like an exercise?

Hi Ron What makes them sound musical is phrasing, dynamics, feel and where you use them. Accenting some notes and ghosting others will go a long way to making these types of exercises sound musical. They must also have some sort of phrasing as to not sound mechanical. You will get a good flow by repetitious practicing with a metronome on 2 and 4 and just playing for many hundreds of hours. Try to play with a bass line as in Allan Cox's Meet the Bass player series and solo over that and record yourself.

Dear Rick, when you substitute with the bass drum around 9:55 are you 1. Pausing with the hand? 2. Playing a ghost with the hand? 3. Accenting with the hand as well? I guess I can try all 3 but I wonder what is your approach! Great video as always! P.S If you have any other Kenny Washington tips/stories please share with us!

Hi Ben I am playing continuous triplets with the hands while the bass drum is playing the written rhythms. I am also accenting some notes with my hands and some with the bass drum. It is a very improvised sort of thing.
