A similar crew moved the doors during Star Trek on the USS enterprise. Whenever the cast members would stand in front of the door to enter a different area of the ship, there were people behind the scenes, sliding the doors open to make it look like they opened automatically. Even though they had Components in real life like they did in a supermarket to open those doors automatically, they just used crewmembers and slid the door. It was a very inexpensive way of making special effects back then.

Same effect was used for the opening and closing credits of Get Smart. Crew were on the sides opening each of the doors..

Back around 1989 I worked on a terrible low budget film with Adam called "Maxim Xul." In it he played a professor who goes up against an ancient Babylonian demon. There was a scene at the professor's house where he sits at his desk. On the desk was a small bust (not Shakespeare -- I can't remember, might have been Beethoven). I joked with Adam and said, "Hey, Adam, are you going to flip up the bust and open the doors to the Batcave?" But he got the better of me. He said, "No, because you grips will forget to open the doors and run I'll into them face first!"

And that was two nights a week. We had a black and white TV and after seeing the bat-phone flash red on my grandparents color TV, we had to go out and get a color one.

They actually did the same thing on Star Trek and TNG. The whirling sound was added later when in post production to give it a futuristic sound effect.

It took the Batman movie to tell us how the two changed costumes while sliding down the Batpoles. One of those if you blink, you miss it, kind of things but made things a bit more "realistic". Prior to finally seeing the movie, I always thought they slid down about halfway to a changing room and then slid the rest of the way down after changing.

I vaguely remember that when Joker took a ride on the bat poles, the auto-dress costume mechanism was said to be down for maintenance. Otherwise as Alfred rode him up and down the poles he would be dressed and undressed as Batman or Robin depending on the Pole he was riding. I wonder how that mechanism would work if Bruce and Dick mistakenly took the wrong poles. Tight fit for Bruce I gather

Were those signs there when Joker mistakenly discovered the bat poles? As some of these criminals found there way in the bat cave, I often wondered whether the excess signage was too much information to put 2 and 2 together in revealing the obvious

I think the same technique was used in the earlier seasons of Mystery Science Theater 3000, particularly when Joel Hodgeson was host; Joel hits the "Movie Sign" button on the console, and a light flases behind the back wall of the set signaling crew members to open the doors to a green screen where the corridor sequence is added later.

3:50 ... Honestly I though it worked much as you described ...BECAUSE, I already knew as a kid the Sliding Door on the Enterprise, on Star Trek, were operated by two crewmen! :) .. BUT I didn't know it operated a light bulb .. I assumed they got a visual wave, or other cue, by the director (or whomever would do that job on the set)

I always wonder how, in the Batman universe, all these things got built. There must have been workers that built the Bat Cave, the Bat Computer, the entrance and poles (even the signage) and the exit for the Batmobile. Oh yeah, and the vehicles. Surely, people at Wayne Industries were used, but that means a lot of people there knew Bruce Wayne and his man-child were Batman and Robin.

Everything in the Batcave wouod probsbly be brought in from outside, so put the workers and equipment in a windowless truck st Wayne Enterprises, drive around 45 minutes circling backrosds to get them disoriented and the go into the cave where everything is to be installed, and let them out to work. Block off the access ways to the Wayne Manor, the eorkers will never be sure where they are or how far from Gotham they traveled, when this series was made there were no cell phones or GPS, and a bug steel box like a vargo truck would even muck up a compass. Its not that hard for Batman and Robin to put up the Batpoles once they are delivered and left in the Batcave, just drive in bolts at top and bottom, and even rich guys can turn a wrench if they want to. Alfred uses stairs most of the time, but there is reference, I think, to him having an elevator, but that's also not that hard to put in as a DIY project, as it goes to just three levels and Alfred could run the ship pulley motors from inside the elevator the way elevator operators used to before the advent of electronic controls. Though its never revesled where the stairway/elevator are in Wayne Manor. The signs couod have been simply ordered by Batman in a print shop, paid for with cash. The most challenging part would be the sliding bookcase, but if it were put in first, the carpenters could have been told it led to an escape tunnel in case someone tried to kidnap Wayne for ransom.

What do you what to bet that there's a 'wine cellar' at the bottom of the elevator leading to a 'moonshiner's cave' that Bruce Wayne incorporated into his mansion? Sounds legit to me... A hidden door behind a wine rack would allow Alfred Batcave access without an explanation needed, especially for a 60s era comic book camp series.@@MGower4465

I always supposed in later years that that's how it worked, but I do have a story for you, Rick I have a friend whose comic book and action figure collection is so vast that when he and his wife moved into a new house, he had the basement converted to a display and storage area for his collectibles... but that's not the fun part. He actually invested in having a desk that has a red bat phone upon which someone can call him and then he can actually walk over to a bust of Shakespeare, open the head and push a hidden button like on the 1960s Batman TV show and an actual hidden labeled bat pole behind a set of phony books just as in the TV show opens up and he can slide down the pole into the basement and to his collection. It looks totally legit, probably better than the set did in person -- and it is totally functional! I kid you not. isn't that the craziest thing ever? Great video because it reminded me of my friend's rooms wbich he had built during covid. Stay hopeful and thanks for the great video!

There was one behind-the-scenes documentary I saw once where they were discussing a scene involved actors on wires (I think it was about 2010: The Year We Make Contact, regarding the spacewalk scenes). The stunt coordinator said he always preferred mechanical means for making effects work on set, rather than with electronics and motors, as those can more often fail. I imagine the same is true with doors that are supposed to open and close - it's more reliable generally to have crew members ready to pull a simple set of pulleys, etc. to open and close the door rather than relying on a computer program to do it at the press of a button. So it would make sense here for Batman, and that's exactly the same method used for the original Star Trek, which was shot around the same time.

It would not be that hard in reality. Think elevater door. The false light weight book case would have been attached to the door, which would have all slid into a door slot in the wall. They also switched back to the close position as they ran to the bat polls. A built in delay would have allowed them to get into the shaft where the polls were. And like an elevater door there would have been a buffer bar that kept the door from closing on them. Bruce Wayne certainly could have afforded all that. Your story about the light cue makes perfect sense in letting the crew know to pull the door open. Rube Goldberg would not have been needed. My 2 cents

As a kid watching those as new shows....always fun. I just watched this and my observation is that Batmans pole is a larger diameter and then the shot in cave, the poles and actors come down on the opposite sides.....we need to call Columbo in...LMAO

Bruce slides down the right pole and batman comes down the right one too. That indicates that the camera in Wayne Manner is facing "south" while facing "north" in the bat cave.

A lot of commenters are wondering how Bruce and Dick managed to change into their Bat-costumes on their way down to the Batcave. This was revealed in the Batman feature film, shot between Season One and Season Two. After they leave the study through the bookcase, there is a cut to the two of them sliding down the poles past a large knife switch, conveniently labeled "INSTANT COSTUME CHANGE LEVER". As they slide down the poles, Bruce reaches out and flips the switch. In the next shot they arrive fully costumed in the Batcave. I did a frame grab but there is no way to post it here...

They used the same technique on Star Trek but there are alot of humorous outtakes of this where the Bridge doors to the Turbo shaft did open or closed on William Shatner ect... They didn't have a light like on Batman.

I had seen an interview of this guy who was on Star Trek and had thought that the doors would operate like they do in grocery stores. Step on a pressure pad and they open. Said he was a little disappointed that it was 2 guys in dirty shirts pulling the doors open. So basically they kept people working with manually opening doors.

The "secret room" in Wayne Manor is Bruce's study. Aunt Harriet has strict instructions never to go in there. When she hears the Batphone, she's told Bruce is tinkering with his hi-fi system. The button operating the door to the Batpoles is actually a rotary switch with what's called a "chickenhead" knob.

well, having watched original airings, it was presumed that the switch activated a motor that opened the access. My next guess, as was done with the star trek elevator doors, is that its opened manually.

I always thought it was a wired button like a light switch. What I always wondered 🤔 is how they they emtered in their clothes and exited in full costumes at the bottom. And how they got back up from Batcave back in clothes, they never showed that. Except one episode when the Joker got in the Batcave, Alfred caught him on the pole and was turning a switch for up and down, up and down, up and down but never a costume change.

The movie shows them throwing a costume switch on the way down. In the episode you reference Batman mentions that it was a good thing Alfred had the costumes out for cleaning or some such or Joker would've been dressed in a Batcostume.

The Batcave had an elevator for Alfred and normal use return to stately Wayne Manor. There was one episode though that had Batman throw a switch at the bottom of the poles that ignited a rocket beneath his landing cushion so Bruce could exit the library he was supposedly in during Batman's foray against crime.

According to Adam they only went down enough so they were out of shot and both scenes going down the batpoles weren’t shot back to back they would shoot the part in in Bruce’s study and they would shoot going into the batcave like a week later and he said one time shooting going into the batcave he fell on someone sleeping at the bottom of his batpole

The same process was done for shows with elevators. Someone just yanked the doors open or closed on cue. In fact, many elevator doors did not even attempt to look real, just a piece of painted wood they slid as needed.

Amazing. I just assumed the switch really did open the doors. That statue will sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars in an auction today. I wonder often about the fate of such props.

I would have to say I'm 99% sure it still resides in the prop department of a studio in Hollywood. It may even have appeared in some other film or TV show in some background somewhere. The hinge mechanism is flawless and would still be spot on as just a Shakespeare bust in some library scene.

Two things I noticed was Bruce and Dicks signs with their names on the poles they use to slide down on into the Batcave. The first two times we see them they were about the same height. The next two times we see them Dicks sign is lower than Bruce's. Of course by today's standards that would not be appropriate, if Dick's sign was placed lower because he was shorter than Bruce.

When you have a budget that is next to nothing, the simplest solution solves the problem. Had they built a real working automatic sliding bookcase, it would have consumed most if not all of their funds. At least they did better than some shows of the era, they actually had somewhat of a real looking bookcase, instead of a flat panel with a painted bookcase on it. 60's television shows were notorious for having very small production budgets, a huge kudos to the art directors for making it work. Save for Batman's third season, when the budget got cut so badly that they were forced to build sets without walls, and keen observes were able to see the black sound stage curtains in the back.

At 3:17 even as a kid, I thought it was funny that, duh! they had to be reminded with a sign that these pole lead to the bat cave, but they also had signs to use their own pole? If Bruce Wayne accidentally took Dick Grason's pole, would that be so horrific? I think it added to the campy-ness of the show. Ok, Dick's pole was slimmer because he was smaller in stature, but how muck money did Bruce save on the bronze for making that one slimmer. Oh, yeah, "Access to Bat Cave via Batpoles" Whew! Good thing they had that sign... one could easily construde them as "Access to the Wading Pool via Waterslide".

Actually, they consulted the various crew members and if they got a majority to agree then they would open the doors. That's why they would refer to the "Bat-poll!"

I was six at the time. I never ever thought it worked like it was shown on the show. It was just a TV effect. Who would think it was actually linked to the bookcase? When I watched _I Dream of Jeannie_ I never thought she actually went into the bottle, either.

There's a full size 1:1 licensed DC bust that has the dial and the light. And you can set it up as a on/off control for one outlet in the house.I passed cos it was 2 bills and I'd never be able to choose what it would control.🙃

That was cool! I always thought the statue was used as a remote control to open the secret panel, kinda like a garage door opener. 3 things I’ve always wondered was 1. Why was Willam Shakespeare specifically chosen to be the secret statue? 2. Why did there need to be a sign of sorts indicating these are the bat poles and this is where they go if it was all hidden? 3. How were Bruce and Dick able to change into the Dynamic Duo while sliding down those poles? Again, great video and I was able to get 2 more people to take an interest in your channel today! You so rock!

The only in-story explanation was that there was a mechanical device that somehow made the switch happen, and we only know that because we saw the switch;s off button a few times when Batman went UP the pole when Batman, not Bruce Wayne, was needed in Wayne Manor. It was also switched off when Joker and Alfred used the poles. Joker never made it all the way down to the cave.

A bust of Shakespeare is always the go-to for a library. Sometimes they have a bust of Goethe or Balsac, but Shakespeare is much more recognized. The same way Beethoven is the bust by the piano

I kind of thought thats what was going on. Someone in the wings behind the wall operating the doors manually. But thanks for posting it anyway. The place my Mom lives in the front sitting room. There's a bust of I think it could be Bethoven. The first time i walked in the front sitting room and I saw that bust sitting there. I vividly remember that bust of Shakespeare bust on the Batman & Robin show. Just thought I'd share that. Have a blessed day everyone

They spin the camera. It’s probably just in an arm so that it is kept secure. It’s a relatively simple effect

I think the spin was done in post. Easier, safer and cheaper than a rotating camera rig. And a staple effect for at least a couple of decades prior to Batman.@@ricknineg

I never thought the bust actually controlled the sliding doors, but I did think they were opened by electric motors, not by men. I figured a crew member hit the actual switch off camera when Adam hit the button in the bust.

What was the point of the silly dial with numbers needing to be turned? Why not just crack the head open and hit a button? Plus, how did they change their outfits on the way down the pole? Also, I do not remember which later Batman movie it was, but I think Bruce was in the attic or some cluttered dark room and you can see a replica of this bust in the background amongst the clutter.

Notice that Bruces batpole is a bigger diameter than Dicks batpole... wonder why that is? Also, when Aunt Harriet came into the library, didn't she ever wonder why there was a red phone on the desk?

Am I imagining things, or did Alfred 'stand in for Bruce Wayne' as Batman very occasionally (in the story, not during filming, of course)? Surely my mind is playing tricks.

Alfred stood in for Batman once when it was imperative for Bruce to be visible nearby. "Batman" appeared on a nearby rooftop because 'he had a cold and didn't wish to risk passing the illness on'. He spoke through a voice changing speaker system to simulate the Caped Crusader's voice. Alfred flexed a bit to seem more muscular and Commissioner Gordon suggested to Robin that Batman should drink plenty of fluids.

Alfred actually knew Batgirl's identity as well as Batman and Robin. Barbara and Alfred were both imprisoned together and she swore him to secrecy before changing to her Batgirl persona. Several episodes later Batman needed Alfred to rescue Batgirl while He and Robin foiled the villain simultaneously. Alfred had to disguise himself as the world's oldest flower child so Batgirl wouldn't realize that the old man who knew her secret identity was directly associated with Batman. That made me laugh.

@@jimprice9703 Alan Napier was actually quite muscular (I know it seems counterintuitive given his height) and didn't need any extra padding to stand in for Adam West (who was actually a little soft in the tummy). The main thing he had to worry about was covering his mustache!

I loved that show as a kid. I still can't decide between Eartha Kitt & Julie Newmar. They were both sexy & Eartha's purr was so spot on. But Julie's hips did me in. OMG. At 7 years old. Julie Newmar & Cher were my women at hat age. And Samantha Stevens. I don't think I ever had a type. lol. My tastes were all over the place. I thought the world was my oyster, until I grew up & found out that the pearl was fake and it was really just a clam. 🤣🤣 (Don't get married. It's a trap!)🙄🤣🤣
