Appreciate the honest, thought provoking review Rick. I personally own a Scotty (paid $400) and have absolutely zero regrets about purchasing it. Not because I hole more putts with it, or because I think it's superior to all other putters...just simply because I really love the way it looks, feels, and I do enjoy having a premium product. To me it's an item I decided to splurge on and treat myself to a shiny pretty toy, not much more to it than that. However, one thing investing in a Scotty did do is make me feel obligated to practice my putting more. haha. So in a way, it did help me sink more putts!

I totally agree! I did the same thing and are seeing the same results. I bought a Scotty for 400€, it was a treat for me. I love the feel, the balance of the club head when putting and the general look. I can't say why, but whenever I pull it out of the bag I get a warm fuzzy feeling inside 😎🏌️‍♂️

IngLouisSchreurs 100% agree ppl should just be honest. There’s zero shame in it. And if the price tag on a brand new Scotty is too steep and someone still wants to bag one, they should just hit up golfbidder! Like fancy watches/cars/etc.,lot of people prefer the styling of the older generation Scotty’s.

I agree with you. I just bought one two weeks ago. The Newport. I'm in love with it. I've played three rounds. I don't putt better. However, I love putting with it and I love how it sounds, looks and feels. I've wanted one for a while and finally did it. I will say, the people I played with, 9 people in three rounds said "wow" when they saw it.

Great, thought provoking episode Rick! I just recently purchased a Bettinardi iNovai 3.0 counterbalanced putter moving from a much more inexpensive Heavy Putter J2, which I was the first real putter that I ever owned. The reason for my decision were driven by a few things - 1) As my game and golf IQ has improved, I became less satisfied with the feel and predictability of the Heavy Putter, driven mostly by the lack of feel; 2) I came to the realization that the club that I use the most should be of the highest quality possible. As you mentioned, we spend close to $400 on a new driver, whe we only use it 14 times a round....why are we short changing ourselves on the putting green, where you get your final score for every hole? I coveted a Scotty Cameron initially because so many of my golf buddies have one, but I was asked to try a friends putter once and I fell in love with the incredible feel - he has a Bettinardi. Started to research the broader world of premium putter and got more convinced that a Bettinardi would be a great investment in my game that would provide the feel that I am looking for. I tested a number of Scotty putters - which were all great, but never convinced me. In summary, value is in the "eye" of the beholder - from a purely financial perspective, I think Scotty Camerons are grossly overpriced, however, if the product delivers what you want in a high quality fashion, and you value the product enough to pay that amount, then it could be a bargain for some. To me, a premium putter should be high on the consideration list if you are a mid hcp that aspires to steady improvement in their game.

I just bought a 2018 Newport select 2.5 in April, played 3 rounds and have made way more putts with it than my odyssey 1W putter. The balance and feel is incredible! It is my favorite club in my bag. It is definitely worth the money I paid ...which was $306 US for demo model from a golf shop that was never hit on real grass. I absolutely love it!

Nice video Rick. The other day I found myself at my local golf shop. I had wedges in mind but they didn’t have the specific one to try so I asked the golf guy what else I needed. He pointed out that a new line of Scotty Cameron putters had just been released. Up until that day I had never tried a scotty cameron before. So i started goofing around with a few of the new super select models in the putting area and fell in love with the super select square back 2. My mind was blown. Everything about it felt amazing and next level compared to my ping sigma 2 tyne that I was fitted for three years ago which I putt above average with but am still dropping them like I could. Speed off the face of better for me. Dispersion and distance control was somehow tighter. I really liked the black alignment line on the grey putter. I was able to align the scotty very easily, naturally, and accurately. The feel is awesome. The balance is awesome. Etc. I putted incredible. It was point and shoot. The ball just ended up where I was trying to put it time and time again. Crazy consistent. My confidence in it just kept skyrocketing the more I putt. And i kept dropping them in the cup or leaving it an inch or two next to or past the cup. Nothing short. I have never reached that level of confidence in a putter before. I was on cloud 9. A result of the overwhelming results. I had dropped putt after putt after putt. Its obviously an amazing putter and despite it seeming like a great fit I wonder how much of the great results I had has to do with the confidence, excitement, adrenaline getting me in zone that day straight out the gate. Knowing that I had a tried and true putter in my hands that, as proven by Tiger, is capable of going in the hole from anywhere. Knowing that Tiger has faith in it. I noticed I was treating it differently than I treat my putter. Holding it more delicately from the moment I first picked it up. Respecting it. Admiring it. Like a work of art. Like a perfect blend of form and function. A subtle celebration of an accumulation of years of human ingenuity. Some magic in it. Like the way King Arthur holds excalibur after pulling it out of the stone in all the movies. Was my putting stroke smoother as a result of my mindset towards the putter? Or maybe I just didn’t want to break it cause it cost 450. Recently on vacation I rented a car. Usually i go with the cheapest rental car but I opted for the land rover because I wanted to understand why a car could cost so much more than another and, if there was something special there, experience it. Man am I glad I did. That car was incredible to drive. The land rover gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. Not because it says land rover on it but because it drives like a land rover. To this day when I see them on the road I am reminded of that joyous feeling of driving one. Next level engineering, comfort, smooth yet responsive handling, craftsmanship, results. It is addicting and exhilarating to drive as is the scotty cameron to putt with. So 450 for a putter is a ton but since trying it out I will end up paying it. Not because I want to show to everyone I have one like some folks with a fancy watch (smart phones have clocks). But to experience the awesome putting results, the feel, the confidence, the fun factor, the enjoyment and to get that warm fuzzy feeling in a game in which the mental aspect plays a big roll. If I could get what appears to be similar results from a different brand that is half the price I am going with the scotty. Samsung recently started making washing machines. I bought one because they make awesome tv’s. The washing machine is a piece of junk. A putter fit put me into a pxg putter when they first came out. I used it for two rounds. The ball was skidding the first 6-ten inches of the putt on morning dewing greens. So 450 for a scotty gets more than just an awesome milled putter. It also comes with the excitement it creates and the extra confidence boost I get from it considering all the names and concepts that are tied to it. Titleist, tiger, scotty, JT, adam scott, rory, vokey, spieth, pga, the history, the years of tradition, on course testing, trial and error tweaking, pga tour pro feedback, innovation and trusted performance. It has become a household name and for a reason. Trusted performance I have both heard about and witnessed/experienced first hand. Quite a package. The same reason I play a titleist golfball. And if I get it out on the course and stink with it or the honeymoon phase ends I will hang it up on the wall or sell it to some other sucker.

My Scotty replaced an Odyssey tri-hot (£89 secondhand), which I still have. I went for a new putter because the face was getting tatty. Both were stored together while I overcame a broken neck. On restarting, the Scotty went straight into play. The Odyssey I had to spend an hour cleaning it up so I could use it to practice indoors.

I am a new follower of your channel. I like the way you approach the lessons. Simple articulation of technicalities make your videos very useful for club level golfers like myself. So a BIG thank you from my side 👍 This was a very thought provoking video Rick. Great discussion points too. I own a Scotty Cameron myself. Putting is a lot about confidence & for some people knowing that you are buying the best adds immensely to that confidence. Like you said, it doesn't guarantee more putts as an equipment per se but the added confidence might help in making more. All good things comes at a price; especially when there is no other option which can boast of same creds. Its like a Mercedes S Class. If you want the best car in the World (S class is generally regarded as such) then you have got to pay the price the maker asks for it as there is no other benchmark. Hence statements like 'equally good at half the price' only amplify the brand image & aspirational value of it.

I bought one of these for myself as a birthday present last year and I have no regrets whatsoever. Great putter, great feel. The thing about Scotty putters, if you take care of them, keep a head cover on them when not in use, you can typically make most of your money back on them should you decide to sell them later. In fact, I have a few that are older that have actually gone up in value. No one “needs” a $400 putter, but no one “needs” a Mercedes or a Lexus either, but a lot of people won’t bat an eye dropping $70K on one of those. And owning one doesn’t make you a better driver.

Faire review Rick thank you. I was once a scratch golfer. Been a very long time haven't been on the course but I'll be back soon. I still use probably the cheapest putter and it doesn't even exist anymore (Masters MC-Z 510). Throughout the years I have tried high and low quality putters but I when it was the subject to be accuracy, I have always used my oldie. The only reason is that I always knew how the putter would react at any condition whether out from the fringe, long or short, up or down the slopes. Any equipment are adjusted up to a certain point either your drivers, woods, irons, wedges or putters. However the player has to have a certain level of play and adapt themselves to their tool box and especially putter the tool the is used the most. I love the feel and the looks of high end putters but there is a time to adapt to their characteristics and reaction in game. And a weekend golfer needs minimum of one year to understand and make the most of it. (considering a weekend golfer won't make more than 52 round of 18 holes a year) So basically it probably is up to the consumer to decide but I would keep my "scotty" at home in case. :)

Great vid and i love this discussion. First off let me say that if you will spend the most money on your set...it should be on the putter. With that being said, you and Pete have shown with 3 years of golfbidder challenges, that yoj can get great putters from 3 to 5 years ago for hardly any money. I personally play a Wilson Staff Infinite Southside...love it and paid $70...plus it is a major winner with Harrington. Secondly, class and prestige is great and all but that will not put the ball in the hole. I played a guy this week that he had a PXG driver, mizura blades, md4 wedges and a Scptty futura putter. I was club geeking badly. I beat him by 10 strokes and my whole set including trolley was about $400 less than just his driver.

David Richard, PXG is ridiculously overpriced. The technology today is great with all the top brands. Pay a lot less for clubs probably just as good and use that extra cash to play more golf. That will lower your scores.

It surprises me that so many players, esp a professional, ball at the price of a good quality putter. I bought a SC Studio Design back the early 00’s and I haven’t regretted it since. It still performs wonderfully well and is by far the most beautiful putter I’ve ever seen. It instills enormous confidence in me and I see no reason to change it. It still looks very good even now, almost 20 years later. In that time I have gone through 3/4 different drivers and rarely because I felt I needed a change; it was because I didn’t want to be left too far behind in terms of using inferior equipment. My putter can last me the rest of my life as it doesn’t suffer wear and tear and there won’t be any new innovations to improve its performance. I use twice as often as any other club in the bag. A good drive can’t save me from a three putt but a good putt can save me from an errant drive. Drive for show, putt for dough.

I’ve just bought my first scotty Cameron putter, and have definitely 0 regrets! I went from using a rubbish, cheap piece of iron from sports direct to a scotty and the difference is ginormous. Had my first round with it today and finished 7 over par. My best yet, on the same course I normally finish between 12-16 over par. Not saying the scotty Cameron was the sole purpose of shaving off 5-10 shots however, feeling confident over the putter from 4,6,8 feet and sinking most puts, where before leaving it short, or just not lining up correctly. I paid £240 for my scotty, I’m looking at it as £12 a year for the next 20 years. Superb piece of business if you ask me!

In fact I haven't really played for the last 20 years but are looking to get back into it. My take on putters is that a putter is a putter and the best one for you is the one that feels best from the face and gives you most confidence when standing over the putt. The rest is up to your stroke, green reading abilities and weight on each putt. Anyways, love your channel Rick

I would spend $500 on a putter that I thought I could use for a long time... 1. If I like the looks 2. I can line the head up well 3. Has good impact feel 4. Can roll smooth on long putts 5. Adjustable in length 6. Adjustable in weight 5 and 6 are so I can use it as my body changes as I get older. Older people my want to stand taller and need a longer putter. Ray Floyd switched to a longer putter to save his back. (Some people might want to adjust weight length/as they adjust their stroke or to new golf courses). I bought an expensive Ping Kitsch putter at about that price and only wish it had weight adjustability. I feel a bit better with a lighter putter and can’t adjust it lighter.

Great video and views. I do own a Scotty Cameron Futura X5, I've only had it a few months, I bought it second hand so I managed to save a few $AUD. (It was $300) I have almost always used blade style putters with milled faces so the transition to the X5 was easy in terms of feel. I tried various Odyssey putters, and almost went for the #7 White Hot, but the face insert was too dull for me, it didn't give me the feedback I was looking for. First off, picking up the X5 it feels beautifully balanced and made to a high standard. As I address the ball, it looks amazing and gives me the confidence straight away, the sight lines are excellent and making practise strokes it flows very nicely. I couldn't look down on the TM Spider Tour (especially in RED, WTF is with that?!) or any of the new Odyssey models and have the same confidence. The X5 has classic looks that I want to look down on. The transition to a mallet from a blade was also quite straight forward with such a quality putter. Do I hole more putts? Maybe 1 or 2 per round, was it worth the money? Yes, I enjoy putting again. I do agree that the current models are expensive (to the tune of $550 AUD in stores), and I wouldn't buy a new one. The used model I have will be a keeper for the years to come.

I just bought a Scotty Cameron putter. After a putter fitting I had three left to choose from and I chose the Scotty Cameron, although all three performed well I liked the look, the attention to detail and the way the ball springs of the face. Guess what: I’ve set a new handicap record after great putting! Not necessarily the putter, but the psychology that I was putting with one of the best (looking) putters did the magic. Yes expensive, but I’ll probably keep it for the next 20 years, like my previous putter! That’s $20 per year, cheap I would say!

I've A-B tested Scotties and Odyssey putters and, here's the important part, I found the Odyssey to be the better putter. Scotties give you more response back, but that didn't matter when I could control and aim the Odyssey better. Used Odyssey putters are the way to go, in my opinion. All in all, it comes down to what gives you the confidence when standing over the ball, what do you putt more consistently with, and what's in your price range. On price, $400 is too much. I golf a lot and that's toward the top of what I'd pay for irons. Newest gear doesn't make you the dearest golfer. If there's one thing I see in your channel, buy 1-3 year old equipment at half the cost of the newest stuff, sacrifice the 5 yards or less, and play more golf with the savings!

I bought a new putter recently and it was a third of the price. First round with it I holed 3 long birdie putts, felt great off the face and can’t imagine how much better it could be paying that much for a putter. I think putting has more to do with how the putter feels when you use it, rather than the price tag or which brand it is. Also Rick, you tested the putter I now have last year,I think it was in turkey (could be wrong) and sang it’s praises. Great review as usual, look forward to the next one Rick 👍

I bot a Golo 5, years ago. I thought at the time is was fairly expensive, but it was my Christmas present to myself. I'd buy it again. Love the feel. And yes, I do put better. I think I've become a very good putter with it. Last time out I just could not miss. I'll say this, every thing is more expensive now. And it ain't getting any cheaper. I've let friends use it as they have asked, and all said the same, nice putter. Thanks for your work. Enjoy your channel.

Just my humble opinion: Once you've matched a putter head to your putting stroke (face balanced, toe hang, mid toe hang, etc.) and selected the right length, I don't think there's a great deal of performance improvement to be had. It comes down to the amount of practice and feel for whichever putter you've selected. I sometimes practice putting with a wedge and have not noticed a great deal of difference in terms of ability to lag and hole out puts (once you've practiced with it for a while) than with a traditional putter. On the other hand, if spending $400 or more on a putter gives you some additional confidence, by all means, have at it.

I have a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 which I had fitted for me. It's a terrific looking putter and when I'm putting well it's fantastic as it gives you lots of confidence over the putt. The downside is that I have to be playing every day and at my best for this putter to turn on. So most of the time I use a Spider - it's more consistent and far more forgiving.

I held out close to 15yrs to get my Dream putter, the OG Scotty Cameron Futura. Back when it was first released, I'm pretty sure it was $200-250 range and rarely would I see a lefty model. I always had to use it right handed at golf shops, just to try it out. I always loved the feel, look and sound of it. I finally managed to get one on eBay for just under $90 without the hardcover. I did eventually get that too. They still hold their value for sure. Hard to find a futura under $100, in left handed. I didn't even bother with the divot tool.

I did not get fit for a putter but I spent a day at my local golf store on their indoor putting green. I found that I liked the counter balanced putters and I quickly fell in love with a Scotty Cameron Dual Balance 6M. I didn't want to throw down that much money for a new one so I picked up a used dual balance Futura X on Ebay for 1/3 of the price. I couldn't be happier with the putter. It made me a better putter but only because I finally found a putter better suited for my putting style. As others have said, the price of the putter doesn't matter if it doesn't work for your style.

I own a scotty but when they came out with the new models, the model I currently have is not available in left-handed (newport 2.5). Cost is a factor but not having a choice is a greater choice for us left-handed golfers. Thanks for the video and the channel. Just found it and have been watching and enjoying.

The main advantage I see in this style putter is the ability to tune it to your stroke style. You can swap out different weights in the sole (and maybe in the handle - don't know). But given you can get that same capability in a Kirkland putter at $150, this one at $400 isn't offering a 160% improvement over the Kirkland. What the extra money gets you is mostly the brand name and style points.

I am coming from a high handicappers perspective here (18-22). I had a try with a Scotty Cameron in a shop, and absolute loved it. It felt incredible. i felt, that to me, the feedback was insane, and that my adjustments to correct myself, where represented by the club. However, it has to be said, i have always favoured a heavier putter, as i feel it encourages a more gradual swing and smoother action, so the Cameron would be great for me. My friend however, has always preferred a light putter. He couldn't get round the heavier putters, such as my Ping or the Cameron. So i think at our level, its far more important to be comfortable with feel, and what you almost, psychologically, lend yourself too. Guys in the lower handicap echelons, i think the same principle applies. How many of us, have an old club in our bag, the old trusty get me out of trouble club, all the advancements in tech etc, but your old club....is the one you turn to

Thanks Rick well done. Many moons ago when I did the dumbest thing. I showed up for a round of golf without my Ping anser putter. I panicked I went immediately into the pro-shop with the intent of borrowing a putter. Luckily they had a brand new Scotty Newport 2 for sale. A little under $200 with tax. I bought the putter and had an amazing putting round. Since then it has been wonderful and awful, and has made it in and out of my bag but mostly in. One thing I noticed in the video is the Odyssey putter you were using bounced the ball a lot more than the Scotty? The only negative I have seen with the Scotty versus the Ping is the softness of the metal. My Ping still looks like a brand new putter and I have had it for over 30 years. Where I have had to send my putter to Scotty to restore 3 times. The metal is very soft and dings very easily.

First off I want to say that I am a big fan of your unbiased club testing and have been a subscriber to your channel for several years. That being said I am surprised that you didn't mention that each Scotty is hand made compared to most other big name companies whose +/- mass manufacturing tolerances on important factors like loft and lie angles can be OFF as much as 2+ degrees and those putters still pass muster as acceptable to go to market for unaware consumers to purchase compared to the very strict tolerances that Mr.Cameron demands from his production team. (Worth every penny.) In my humble opinion many who purchase a Scotty also have filled their bags with high end equipment to narrow down their reasons (excuses) on why bad shots and putts are happening to just leave the player themselves as to why it happened to incentivise themselves to get out and practice more to improve their games. Each and every Scotty is made to exacting standards. IE: if the specs says your Scotty is 3.75 degrees of loft, it is. Try a comparison of actual lofts and lies with Scotty's against some of those other big name manufacturers. I am not trying to bash other companies as many have a high end line of "tour" putters that are forged and held to stricter standards as well. Just my $.02 here Rick. Keep up the great work!

Another nice video. I like your postings because I never detect sponsor bias (unlike some other channels) and rarely personal bias (which is hard for anyone to do). Personally, when it comes to the cost of a Scotty Cameron putter and other golf equipment, I think that the game is pricing out a lot of people. Golf has never been inexpensive but now it is approaching the ridiculous. Most golfers would get a better return on their investment by purchasing less expensive equipment and spending the money they saved on golf lessens.

If buying a Scotty Cameron causes you to feel better standing over the ball, and more likely to make a confident stroke, it is definitely going to be better than a cheaper putter. Additionally, if the look persuades you to practice putting more, then it's worth it as well. I personally use a PING Anser 2 that I bought used for $75. One day I will definitely get a Scotty Newport 2 though. Moral of the story is, if you can afford $400 for a putter (I can't), and it makes you enjoy looking at and using your putter more, then it'll make you a better putter. Odysseys are very good and functional but lack any personality or beauty. I've used them before, but i'll never buy another. Cheers folks!!

I tried other putters that felt good but I like the way the Newport looks the most. After fit and feel, I like my club to be aesthetically pleasing and the others didn’t suit my eye. I’m sure I could have saved some money; but if this is what a lot of my favorite pro’s use, I take comfort in knowing that if I miss a putt it was my stroke and not my gear... I wouldn’t suggest this putter if you still have gaps in your bag though. Also, if I spend 400 on a club, I’m going to practice more with it.

I picked up a Wilson 8802 Milled for $180, sold my scottys and have not looked back. The only neg feedback I have on scottys is the face insert, I personally am not a fan. I also picked up a used Rife Bimini, great putter. I guess in the end, if you need a $400 putter to putt well, then that is your price point. This is not a scotty hater comment for all the purists out there, the newport 3, the heel shafted model i tried it out, felt good and rolled well. after sinking a few putts at the store with it, it did nothing more for me that my 8802 doesnt. get what makes you feel confident on the green. Great video. well done Rick.

I love buying and using different putters, at the moment I have an Edel Brick, Bettinardi BB1, Never Compromise Gambler Flush and an Odyssey V-Line Tank. All of them are very different putters, they offer different things and are personal in their own way. The putter is the easiest club to develop an attachment to I think. Scotty’s are valued appropriately because people pay the money for them, they hold their value pretty well especially in comparison to other clubs on the market

Putters are worth the price it’s the only club you use on every hole so I think it’s worth it 👍🏻

Sorry! I heavily bat an eyelid at £400 pound for a driver... Now with the custom fitting options I hit up demo days and remember the spec and pick up the club 2nd hand about 12/18 months later for a 1/3 of the price!

Thanks Rick! I watched this video when you originally posted it. I watched it again, as I'm seriously thinking about trading in my 5CB for the Newport 2. I'm a huge Scotty fan.
