Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This KZfaq channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.

I've recently returned to golf after about an 18 year break. The price of putters is absolutely mental ! When I stopped playing the Ping Anser was the daddy and the Odyssey two ball had just made an appearance , I think they were both about 100 quid. I get that tech in woods and irons can be more forgiving /better etc etc , but , I cannot accept these putters make that much difference. I recall a Rick video where a Tour Pro went around with a budget set with a budget putter and he holed everything with it ! I think he even asked if he could have it. 400 pounds plus for a putter is crazy money.

Personally, I'm loving these reviews because as a person relatively new to golf there's still a long way to go before I would even come close to considering these premium equipments but having you review them at least gives me the chance to understand the comparisons and see what all the fuss is about. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, my golf improves to a point where I can start looking at these options and can notice the improvements it brings.

Bob Charles is considered one of the top 3 greatest putters of the 20th century. He used an Acushnet Bullseye putter. Ben Crenshaw, another of the top 3 used a Wilson blade 8802. Bobby Locke used a Darcy putter that looks like a butter knife blade. They didn't need a $500 Scotty Cameron putter. IT'S NOT THE ARROW. IT'S THE GUY SHOOTING THE ARROW.

Great review as usual Rick! In love with that putting surface and projector! Always amazes me how some people baulk at paying £300+ for an amazing quality handcrafted putter, that is the most used club in the bag, but will happily shell out £500 for the latest driver tech! Rick got a putter fitting and complete lesson on all aspects of putting with Brad Faxon!! He is a bad Putter and couldn't make 5 20 Footers EVER on a regular course. Synthetic putting surfaces instantly get grooved from the ball rolling over and over and over and the person stepping down the line to retrieve the balls! It creates a trench so your ball constantly goes straight and you have to really hit a terrible putt to have it leave the groove that's been made in the fake turf..Rick would not have a KZfaq channel if you told him he had to go out and make 5 20 Footers on a real green before he gets to shoot content again!😂😮😅

Been playing golf for about 35 years. I think over that time I’ve had 4 putters. My last putter was a Taylormade Rossa Monza I had for probably 15 years. Upgraded to a Scotty Cameron Phantom X11 last year. It’s a work of art. Love picking it up and practicing. I’m not sure I’m a better putter because of the Scotty, however it does give you this confidence especially form inside 10 foot that you can make a lot of putts. I can’t see me changing this putter for a very long time.

My thought on golf club feel in general is that it is very much a personal thing. Certain golfers want to feel different things than others, so the putter feeling softer or harder isn't necessarily a bad thing depending on who you are. The feel of a club being better or worse is very much a subjective thing. This is also TaylorMade's first go around at milled putters, while Scotty has been doing it for ages, so some areas to improve on was expected. I have no doubt that TM are going to get a lot of info back because A LOT of people were waiting for milled putters from them and will make changes based on feedback. One change hopefully will be the naming, which you were right on about btw, its horrendous. Like if you tell me Spider, Juno, Soto, Del Monte, Newport, Del Mar, Phantom, Anser etc. easily identifiable names and I'll instantly know what you're talking about. These, not so much.

Perfect review! I'm a big fan of Taylormade from the start (25 years golfing), but they are very strong in wooden clubs for decades. Some of the irons where epic (played 300 iron set 17 years) but not everything was exceptional like the wooden range. That quality is similar with Titleist putters and wedges. The feel and quality is next level like Taylormade in woodies.

I think it might have been good to also compare it to the equivalent Anser-style putters from Ping & Odyssey. Personally, I think the entire "super premium" putter thing is a perfect example of the mental aspect of golf. Paying more for a putter shouldn't make you putt better, but many people will claim it does. Take the Scotty Cameron name off and hide the ability to see the weights (weight it the same, just have them built-in so you can't see them), tell the pros it is a budget no-name putter costing under $100, and then keep careful stats on how they putt...

I had that same feeling when i first briefly tested and bought my first, and only, scotty cameron twenty yrs ago, a Newport style blade. Unmatched feel and balance. About seven yrs ago i bought a semi mallet face balanced putter and have been using it ever since. It is heavier in the head which is not quite to my liking but has served me well especially in the long putts. I still use the scotty occasionally but the face balanced one is more tolerant and produces better results for me in general. Not a fan of the current trend for heavy headed putters but clearly some feel better balanced than others, and the high end ones come with adjustable weights. It's hard work to choose a new putter these days and, given the high prices, it's probably better to look for a good custom fitting - but this too is not easy to find.

Here is my interpretation of the naming system for the Taylormade TP Reserve Putters (check out the putters and their spec sheets on the TM website to see for yourself): TR = TP Reserve, such that the TR-B11 expands to TP Reserve B11 The letter, B or M = Blade or Mallet The first number further specifies the head shape. There are 3 different Blade putter heads used in the TP Reserve lineup, signified by 1, 2, or 3. The TR-11 and the TR-13 share the same (Blade #1) head, while the TR-29 (Blade #2) and the TR31 (Blade #3) each have different head shapes. The Mallet putters also come in 3 different heads, signified by 2, 3, or 4. The second number signifies the type of hosel and is the same for both the Blade and Mallet models. 1 = L-Neck, 3 = Small Slant, 7 = Single Bend, 9 = Flow Neck. Putting all this together and breaking down each putter in the lineup: TR-B11 - TP Reserve Blade style #1 with an L-Neck TR-B13 - TP Reserve Blade style #1 with a Small Slant TR-B29 - TP Reserve Blade style #2 with a Flow Neck TR-B31 - TP Reserve Blade style #3 with a Single Bend TR-M21 - TP Reserve Mallet style #2 with an L-Neck TR-M27 - TP Reserve Mallet style #2 with a Single Bend TR-M33 - TP Reserve Mallet style #3 with a Small Slant TR-M37 - TP Reserve Mallet style #3 with a Single Bend TR-M47 - TP Reserve Mallet style #4 with a Single Bend "Why do the Mallet models start at 2?" So that the numbers found in the Blade (B) models aren't repeated in the Mallet (M) models. If the Mallet head shapes were signified by 1, 2, and 3 (like the Blade head shapes), there would be a TR-B11 and a TR-M11 (and 11 would actually be the only case of repeated numbers if this were the case, as the M lineup would consist of 11, 17, 23, 27, and 37). Having the Mallet models start at 2 means each putter can really be identified by just the numbers themselves. Personally, I'm willing to bet this is more for clarity within the digital systems used along TM's supply chain rather than reducing the confusion of the consumer.

I feel that with today's R&D, the difference in quality and performance between a SC Newport, TM Reserve, Toulon Design, Evnroll, Bettinardi, or any other premium line putter is purely subjective and individually dependent. Most want the Scotty because of the name recognition. With any putter, if it fits your eye and your stroke, it'll work.

Thanks for the review. One comment I rarely understand from many prolific golfers is about the price of these top end putters. They are willing to spend $600+ on a driver that they will use 12-14 times on a standard par 72 course, yet have trouble spending $300+ on putter that will be used 28-36 times on that same course.

That premium driver can easily give you 10-50 yards extra. Plus extra precision so you end in fairway. Making your approach shot much easier (from +170y to -150y) ensuring you end on the green and not beside it. Putter... I'm not sure it changes that much. In the end it comes up to reading the green and getting the correct speed. I had an old putter (just a clump of iron) the I got from a £250 set I bought 30 years ago, and I could bomb puts with it. It was amazing... Now I have a ping mallet putter. Much softer feel, but I am no better at putting than I was before. The feel is better with a +300 putter. No question... But it will not make you better at reading the green, and I don't see it sinking more puts. I would rather get at £100 putter and then spend 200 extra on a driver.

@@henrikravn6050 If you were upgrading from your grandad's wooden driver circa 1972 to today's Taylor Made Stealth 2, then yes, I can see you and me gaining 50+ yds of distance. On the other hand upgrading from TM Sim2 to TM Stealth 2, not so much. I also never said that getting an expensive putter is going to automatically improve your game. Only repeated practice, golf lessons and time will do that. What a good putter can do however, is make you "want" to spend more time on the practice green, instead of just trying to bomb a bucket full of balls, down the range, hoping to go past that 300 yd sign.

I am not a person to swap Putters very often. In thos 30 years I owend one Ping Zing 2, an Odyssey and now the SC. I do not think that anyone is able to compeete with these Putters, they are amazing.

Just made my order on 2nd swing. Pieced together a good set after no golf for over a decade! Just at $300 but I still need a putter. I'd love to see this compared some other budget putters. I need more videos to help me pick a putter lol.

Nice review guys, You gotta see what you can do with the 'clunk' of the ball going in the hole, and if there's a way to get it closer to the satisfying 'click-click-click' of a hold on a golf course. I'm sure there's limitations to what can be accommodated on the platform, but surely there's a way to get it closer. Looking forward to more great reviews!

Your comment on the naming got me thinking. You mentioned the Taylormade Stealth, here in the States, the 3 putters you tested are all the names of military airplanes. Not sure if Taylormade did that on purpose, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. 😉

For sure, as long as the length is comfortable, you like how it looks and feels the price tag really doesn't matter. Who cares if you're using a 30yr old putter if you're making putts.

It's interesting to watch this. I think the sound and feel of the Taylormade putters is better than the Scotty Cameron putters. To me, the quieter/softer sound of the TM is preferred over the clickier/harder sound of the SC. Just goes to show that people's personal preferences have to be accounted for in the fitting process. The grooves on the TM putters are likely what gives the softer/quieter feeling. Great review and really enjoy the new studio!

I love the new test bay! As for the new Taylormade Reserve putters. Very well done. I recently replaced an Anser / Newport 2 style putter with a Scotty Super Select Newport 2.5+. Really a nice putter. The 2.5 was a better putter for the greens / courses I frequent most. I did try the new high end Wilson, Evnroll and Cleveland putters, but the Scotty performed better for me. Shortly after my purchase, Taylormade introduced their Reserve line. I spent a great deal of time at the putting bay with my son going back and forth with several high end milled putters. All very nice. He bought the B13. So after multiple rounds of on course putting and comparison putting, it was obvious I putt better with my sons B13. It rolls the ball online better for me. The good news for me is that my shop has a 90 day return guarantee. I swapped out the Scotty for the Taylormade. The price difference was a box of Pro V1’s. For me, the Taylormade stood out as my best performance option. And the Taylormade grip fits better in hand. And the head cover is classy AND VELCRO FREE. I hate Velcro closures. Good luck to all avoiding the putter Merry-Go-Round.

Definitely interested in seeing more of both budget and high end "internet" or "Instagram" brands get an in-depth review. Is Robin or Stix any good? Are Lazrus wedges worth checking out? On the other end of the spectrum, is a $500-600 putter from LAB Golf worth your time over a Scotty or higher end Odyssey? Love the channel, keep up the great stuff!

Rick needs to add one more test to putter reviews. How well does the backside of the putter scoop up a ball. That's the most important part if your round includes a lot of gimmes or you give up after making double par.

The reason the middle tp reserve felt like it was closing through impact is because it is face balanced vs heel toe weighted like the first and second putter.

I went and putted with every putter at PGA tour superstore with no real budget and a plan to buy a tp reserve or scotty. What worked best for me was a $180 spyder gt rollback. The more I tried putters I realized I do miss the sweet spot on some putts and the rollback was spot on. Big plus is its so cheap i dont need to use a headcover just throw it in the bag no worries

The feel of the putter would also be down to the individual. Especially if one is a beginner. When I started playing beginners were quite happy with the ambidextrous putters whilst low handicappers and pros seemed to like putters with the shape of the Scottie Cameron. Now putters must have inserts for low handicappers and pros for them to be able to 'feel' the putter strike the ball.
