“it’s a small world SCORING TIMELINE
The following session info credited to Paul F. Anderson
July 5, 1963 Walt Disney hired the Sherman Brothers to compose music & lyrics for the Pepsi-Cola Exhibit
July 16, 1963 Richard Sherman & Ginny Tyler record the first demos
August 20, 1963 Bobby Hammack assigned to arrange & conduct all music
October 7, 1963 Piano track was created and lead sheets copied and sent to Italy, Japan, Mexico to be translated and recorded in their native languages. After failure to find British children in LA the London office stepped in to help. A local musician was sent the music to determine that the song was suitable for bagpipes
October 16, 1963 Music breakdown was completed
October 21,1963 Bobby Hammack completed the first 12 arrangements as well as supervised recording Roberta Shore as the Swiss Yodeler
October 22, 1963 On Disney Studios Stage A with 25 musicians, Bobby Hammack conducted and recorded the first 12 "it's a small world" cues
October 23, 1963 Swedish vocals were recorded by 4 local girls as well as “La La La” for France & “Quack Quack Quack” for Holland
October 30, 1963 (my 7th birthday) Staff composer George Bruns took time out to re-record the Tuba line for Germany. Other Disney staff helped out as well including Flo Daniels, music department secretary contributing squeals and “Oo-la-las” for the French Can-Can dancers
Early November Disney Studios received recordings back in Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and authentic British accents from London
November 21, 1963 Bobby Hammack conducted 12 musicians recording the next 17 exotic arrangements of “it’s a small world” cues
January 15, 1964 Finale & Queue music were recorded with 46 musicians. Music for Ireland was re-recorded to more emphasize the harp figures in the arrangement
January 16, 1964 Finale & Queue music vocals were recorded with 15 children & 8 adults
February 13, 1964 A sweetening session included children laughing and Jimmy MacDonald recording, at half speed his hyena laughs for Africa, as well as changing Quacks to Honks for the Belgian geese
February 17, 1964 Began to mixed-down from stereo to mono dubs from 35 Millimeter magnetic film stock to 32 track magnetic tape
April 14, 1964 Bobby Hammack traveled to New York City for the installation and to make some minor levels adjustments to the audio in the show building

Very cool. This has always been one of my favorites. Riding it just gives me a few minutes of cozy warmth that we'll never see in a Disney attraction again.

Very cool. No disrespect to the adult singers but the children singing really brings it to life.

INCREDIBLE job with all of the documentation included! My hat is off to you for this! Thank you--this took some work. I came back to edit this comment because I just noticed something that isn't mentioned in the notes. I have a musical ear and have never noticed this until now (I'm 53 years old and have spent my life at Disneyland). Listen to the bass singer at the end with the "15 children and 8 adults"! That's Thurl Ravenscroft isn't it?? If so, that would blow my mind lol Am I hallucinating???

RIP to the Sherman Brothers, they've brought us so much joy over the years. Thank you so much for this Ricky! Is there any chance of hearing instrumental versions of the South Seas and New Guinea Drums tracks?

I wonder what recording studio they record this at. Not all soundtrack albums in the 40s til the late 70s, beginning with Star Wars, has a location at which recording studio they were recording in. Plus, I can’t believe I’m listening to this after the passing of Richard Sherman. I can’t get over his death, even though I’m trying to accept it and move on. This is great though.

well, in the original 1964 in-ride version they put the last verse on top of the first verse. the later 2003 remaster just contains the last verse acting as both verses.

Long story..I shared my Disneyland 50th mixes with a couple imagineers and they loved them and gifted the 4 work discs for the then abandoned World's Fair CD set. When I noticed the small world track was missing several cues they sent me the sessions. Thanks for listening
