I upgraded from XF10 to Ricoh GRIII, call me crazy but I sold my GRIII and repurchased xf10. I do not baby my street photography gear. My origianal XF10 had a huge dent on the body and still functioned perfectly and had no issues with dust. Hearing how GR was prone to dust I did by due diligence and purchased a case, never put the bare camera in my pocket but after 2 month of use I had a dust on the sensor and I usually shoot around F8 or F11 so this was a problem for me. I got it serviced but I was worried that I'd get the dust again so I started not taking out my GRIII in dust prone situations (Beaches, Old dusty buildings, sanddunes etc) and this was not something I worried about when using XF10. I ended up selling my GRIII and buying a used XF10 for $250 and now am beating this camera like I used to before and it functions perfectly. For me at least, XF10 was more suitable. If it breaks, I still have enough funds left over from my GRIII sale to purchase another one.

I think zone focusing on this little beauty is probably the way to go. It's quicker as well when you turn off AF. It's a shame though - with really great AF I think the XF10 would be almost unbeatable.

Indeed, go back to the film days of photography, before the digital era, on street with 28mm lens, f11, corresponding distant mark of the focal range set to infinity, you seldom need focusing, just press the button. That's all. At that time a lot of people argued that manual lens were actually better than auto focus lens. Substitution of film by a sensor doesn't change the basic principles of optics.

I was getting all excited about the Fujifilm x100v. Then I realized it wouldn't allow me to do anything more than my other Fujifilm cameras. It wasn't smaller than my X-E3, and I wasn't going to carry it any easier. That's when I decided to get the Ricoh GRIII. IT is a wonderful camera, and it is with me much more often than any other camera.

This was a nice review of a pair of competitive pocket cameras, Matt. And I commend you on your choice of background music for this video! The Fujifilm had more pleasing images to my eye, but I agree with your assessment of Ricoh's slight edge in the high ISO shots. I'd have to give the Ricoh the edge overall based on its IBIS and the slower and repeatedly inaccurate focus by the Fujifilm.

XF10 is nearly 2 years old now - and even on release, I know the AF issues were publicised. I'd love to see an update of the XF - at a higher price point even - getting closer to the X100 performance (maybe even with an X-Trans sensor), but same form factor. I had the Ricoh GRIII from lens rentals and the largely digital controls combined with awful battery life just put me off.

Good review, thanks. Did you update the firmware on the Fuji? I just bought an XF10 new in the UK, and it shipped with version 1.0. The updates fix a lot of the AF issues, although honestly it's still not terrific. (I had a GRII for a while and I'd say the new Fuji's AF was at about that level.) Apart from price, I had a lot of trouble with sensor dust with the GR, and I suspect that retractable lens doesn't help, so that steered me towards the XF10. The Fuji's lens cap is indeed a PITA though! Image quality is gobsmacking, in my opinion.

I own the Pentax K-1 and had to incresse the "CLARITY" and "SHARPNESS" to the maximum value for optimal results, as by default this camera delivers rather soft images. I was shocked, the change was simply brutal, so much that I don't understand why Ricoh (Pentax) decided to set those soft/poor default settings. Were you shooting the Ricoh GR III with default settings? I think probably that's the reason why the Ricoh shows softer images than the Fujifilm.

Has anyone gone from an X100v series to X10? I realise x100v is superior in every way, but am finding pocketability being an issue, i used to have the older ricoh with me way more often than i do the bulkier and heavier x100v now. X10 being fairly old and inferior AF, Im also contemplating the grIIIx but again had issue with ricoh in the past, burnt board, dust etc This is to take occasional shots, street, travel and evening shots mainly

How is the dust resistance on the Ricoh. Past models had issues. I loved my II.

It now has Ibis and an added setting to 'shake the dust' of the sensor.

It's supposedly a lot better due the feature jrobo mentioned. However, that lens on the Ricoh moves way more than the lens on the XF10. Much larger exchange of air taking place. Time will tell, I guess.

Attach the lens cap to the neck strap not the Camara. Put it behind your neck when shooting.

If the GR III seems expensive at $899 compare to the Leica Q and it will seem a raging bargain. There isn't much the GR III can't do at a very high level.

Fantastic comparison and great photoshoot with Shakira! Hopefully there is a famous Fuji firmware upgrade coming or a new version of the camera down the road as the Fuji colours and film simulations are second to none.

My personal comparison of Fuji X70 and Ricoh GR III is way sharper and the Fuji is always a bit soft. I’d take the Ricoh all day long. And yes, Fuji lens hoods piss me off.

Matt, the glaring error in your review is the standout feature of the Ricoh is IBIS. you should have compared some low light shots where a 1/3rd second exposure setting was required. I would prefer IBIS over inbuilt flash. Ricoh also have a small flash for the GRIII. www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/accessory/flash/af201fg/index.html Otherwise good review.

@@mattgranger Yes you did but you didn't demonstrate it's serious real world benefits. I think you should have as it is the main difference between the GRII and the reason why the flash was omitted on the GRIII. Thanks for the review. I think it was quite fair.

@@mattgranger In the point and shoot camera it is. Try taking a low light photo without flash and see how they compare? I prefer a soft natural light to a harsh flash.

@@photocraigo9474 One could use flash other than low-light situations. Fill-flash for outdoor portraits or backlit scene for example.

I have the original GR 16 Mp version. I would say the Canon M6 Mk2 with its 22mm f2.0 lens beat them both. I bought one late last year. Its more versatile and still have the option to change lens but I use it with the 22mm f/2.0 most of the time.

I wish GR had 35mm lens but it will probably never come true. I personally prefer 35mm fov but can't stand the stupidly gigantic Fuji X100 series.

I actually own both the M6 II and the Ricoh GR III. The M6 II is arguably the much more capable camera all around. But it doesn't fit in your pants. Combine that with a razor sharp lens and IBIS, and you have a winner for everyday carry. Everything else is bested by the M6 II, if pocketability is not paramount.
