Hey everyone, this week's video is a little different than previous videos. In this week's video I'm starting a new series called Questions. From the beginning of this channel, my vision has always been to share my journey as I become a better photographer as well as a better person. I did that because the entire time that I've been shooting, I've been engulfed by my own questions. I've wanted to figure out how to do so many things, and I'd often struggle to get answers. I'm still struggling to get some answers :) As this channel is growing and some of you are reaching out wanting to know how I do or approach certain things in photography, it's reminded me of how I wished someone would have answered my questions in the past (and now I kind of stopped asking as I just figure most people won't answer).. In this series, I'm going to answer the most frequently asked questions as well as share some of my own questions and the possible answers I'm discovering. In today's episode, I answer some questions about the Fuji XF10. Some of you have reached out on instagram ( I never anticipated that people would go out and buy this camera based off of the videos I was posting) and have asked me about my settings. In today's video I"m going to walk you through my approach (which in my opinion determines how I set up my cameras) and I'm going to show you all of the settings I use regularly as well as several pictures and videos to demonstrate my reasoning for those settings. Even if you don't own a Fuji XF10, I think there's some value in the video. After watching this video, you might want to take out an old camera and see if you can set it up in a way that will resonate with you. The video is kind of long (but informative I hope) so I've written all of the settings below this description. Feel free to take what you need but I would like to remind you that in the end, if you continue to shoot and practice as much as possible, with time, you will probably end up adjusting your settings to fit your shooting style, your needs and your approach. As always, thanks for your continued support and I hope you enjoy/ed this video.
My XF10 Setttings
MODE: Aperture Priority most of the time on this camera (Sometimes I'll use Manual as well.
EXPOSURE COMPENSATION: -1 (though I do adjust to taste when needed)
APERTURE: I shoot a lot at 2.8 on this camera unless I'm doing a landscape or zone focusing, I always leave it at 2.8.
ISO: I usually leave it to auto iso.
How I set up my Quick Menu
Auto iso
white balance
noise reduction -2
highlights -1
shadows -1
color-1
Astia or Classic Chrome (I've been using Astia a lot lately)
Raw and JPG Fine at 3:2 ratio or sometimes even at 16:9
The quick menu changes when I try specific recipes but I've been sticking to this one for the last couple of months.
How I set up my function menu (I call these accessible settings cause these are the ones I use when I'm on a shoot or out shooting)
FOCUS WHEEL: (that's not actually part of the Fn setting menu) I've assigned the white balance feature to it so that I can change the tint (I usually do this for the first photo if i'm going to shoot jpg's and then I leave it for the rest of the shoot or day. It's been the same for the last couple of months)
FN1 (button on top of the camera): This is set to activate the flash
FN2 (the button on top of the Q button). This is set to Auto focus mode. I always shoot with wide tracking on this camera so i don't really use this button much these days. If I need to select what I want to have critical focus, then I turn on the SHOT feature on the right side of the screen and I tap what I want to be in critical focus and the camera will take the picture focusing on what I tapped. I ALSO SHOOT IN AUTOFOCUS SINGLE always.
SWIPE LEFT: shutter type (mechanical shutter, electronic shutter or mechanical electronic)
SWIPE RIGHT: Flash Compensation
SWIPE DOWN: Activates my movie frame rates and resolutions (I LOVE THIS FEATURE)
SWIPE UP: Activates SnapShot mode. One swipe activates the 5mm mode, an additional swipe activates the 2mm mode and an additional swipe returns the camera to autofocus.
These are my settings. If you'd like a more thorough walk through of each setting you can watch the video.
Thanks again and I wish you all an amazing morning, afternoon or evening depending on when you're reading this.
Take care and see you on the next one!
