Smooth tracking is one of the most important underlying aim mechanics in FPS games, but is also one of the most overlooked since it looks effortless when executed properly. If you want to become a great FPS player you need to learn how to perform smooth tracking properly, and this video gives you all the tools you need to do so.
This continues the planned 12-part series which when watched start to finish, will teach you every single aim mechanic that you need to be a complete FPS aimer.

8:25 1. Dont predict 2. Readt smoothly 3. Dont tense up 4. Watch the bot NOT the crosshair 5. Microcorrect to stay on target 6. Dont overreset 7. Reset optimally (when the bot pattern the least viable)

For beginners I think that it is also important to do smoothness drills at a sense that uses your full arm because it is a safe way to develop those muscles.

Half-way through this video after watching countless tracking aim improvement videos, after you said to visualize holding something fragile and trying a round with space bar as your fire key to understand what no tension feels like, I did those two things, tried again after the space bar run, and immediately PB'd on the next run in a tracking scenario on Kovaaks. Thank you for actually giving useful advice

For those who want to know how effective and universal smoothness is, i can tell you that before smoothness training i was like a bronze/silver in average score. Now I’m so more consistent in aim training and in game I’m so more relaxed, one thing that used to get me killed a lot before was my reflexes to tense when entering a gun fight suddenly my aim started to be shaky and i lost plenty of gunfight that i should have win. But aim training really gives you the confidence and smoothness in particular is probably the most helpful imo.

@@escapegulag4317 i bet, it’s imo such a useful tool, to be more consistent and it’s universal skills, meaning that accros the different aim technique (tracking, flicking etc.) it will alway be useful to be stable. I play KBM on PS4 and have been for the past 13+ months to get good aim before I get my PC, COD is the only thing I play but since I'm on console I can't use Aim Labs or Kovaaks so I have an aim training routine with a few maps on Fortnite creative and custom games on cod to practice tracking and flicks/Target transitions; over the past year I've progressed way more than I thought possible on console, but I always have room to improve so I'm constantly taking inspiration from the top tier aimers in the aim community to always motivate me and watching vids for advice, man just the first 10 minutes of this video alone have been more helpful than any vid I've ever seen or advice I've ever heard in over a year of being on KBM. Honestly thank you so much man, will keep coming back to this to keep improving my aim and especially when I get my PC and can use Aim Labs/Kovaaks! 💪🏼💙

So I opened this video two days ago. Just skimmed as I couldn’t hear much at work. At first I coupled this with the other aimlab/aim vids I’ve been looking at. Didn’t even make it past 5.5mins. Anyway, you’ve helped me tremendously with just two things in that 5 minutes. You spoke about weight/traction and it made me really think about and look at what I’ve got going on because I couldn’t track at all. It was always just skips. I literally had my palm planted on the mousepad. I’m very new to pc gaming. Anyway. I fixed that thanks to you. Thank god because I couldn’t understand what was so WRONG. Secondly, you said just assume the tracker is going to continue in the same direction for forever. With just those two things not only can I effectively train but I’m a completely different, capable fps player. I’m not exaggerating either. My performance is night and day thanks to you. I had to come back and dig this video out of my history to thank you, like and subscribe. For whatever reason those two things (which at the time I didn’t know was an issue) you said kept ringing in my head. Mastering the neutral position in just 48 hours was absolute key for me to be able to build on. Thanks tons man.

So I have been noticing my smoothness getting worse. In trying to improve my tracking I have begun to develop bad habits. Why? I was training wrong. In 23:55 you have saved me the years it would have taken me to figure this out on my own! This is nuts! DUDE! Tracking is at least 1/3 of my training. One sec I have to bang my head on the desk. Of that 1/3, 100% involves left clicking of some sort!!! Jeez!! There were times where I was smooth as butter. In those moments I would notice how relaxed my movements were. And now that I'm thinking about it, that only happens when I do switch tracking. The only tracking drill I do that requires no clicking. Why would things feel so smooth one minute? And not the next? I couldn't reproduce it when I wanted to. Oh because in a thirty minute training I was training smoothness for one minute and then trying to apply for the rest of my training. You do not understand. I was asking myself things like, maybe it's caffeine, sleep? Um no. I'm not getting any smoother because I'm not f-ing training for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I Bang bang bang goes my head. This changes everything for me.Doah!

amazing video, was wondering if you could make a video explaining the science behind aiming, stuff about the calculations of trying to transfer sens from one game to another. going in depth on that about fov and what not, also stuff about the muscles in your arm that are used for aiming and how you can effectively train a specific part of your arm. and the phycological aspect of when your presented with a certain shot in a game or how to make your aim training more affective. or showing what having technique is in terms of aiming, theres probably many many more things you could talk about the science of aiming, really like the long videos and how much they cover and how well it covers it too. i really want to know more about aiming, i want to be able to teach others about it, i dont do it enough to where id make videos but not just for telling others but for myself. im really into things aiming related and i cant find more about it, you seem to know a lot about the science behind aiming so i really want to know every last detail.

hey man, ik you dont know my but i have 1.2k hours on kovaaks and 6k hours on comp fortnite. finding a perfect sensitivity is as easy as doing a perfect 180 if you can do a perfect 180 with ur sens then it is the most optimal. if you cant its time to tweak :)

Great video as always Ridd! I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on centering in regards to smoothness - i.e. not moving your crosshair to the target, but rather moving the target to the center of your screen and keeping it there. Technically I guess its the same thing, but at least to me centering feels like it's "easier to digest" if you know what I mean. I've been training without a crosshair recently, and I feel like it helped a lot, since it doesn't allow me to fall back into moving the crosshair instead of the target if that makes sense.

@RiddBTW
@RiddBTW 2 жыл бұрын
glad it's helping! there's no real secret to practicing with visual clutter...it's an unfortunate side effect of modern fps games. Some people have built scens in Kovaaks that purposefully include visual clutter but I can't speak to their effectiveness. It's really something you just have to get better at in game, eye tracking exercises can help.

Probably a stupid question but do you smooth track with your arm? I'd imagine that it'd be difficult to track the wide movement of training bots with just your wrist unless you're on high sens. Also what eDPI do you recommend? Been playing valorant for 5-7 months at 280 eDPI (based on val). Tracking is mostly terrible and shaky. Also thanks for the great video, quite a breath of fresh air from the other "guides" I've gotten

most people can operate effectively anywhere from 15-80 cm with tracking, some can operate even outside of those bounds but it starts to become more difficult. i personally smooth track with (mostly) my arm but some people are amazing with dominant wrist. it is very context-specific and i encourage people to experiment and train both

I really liked your idea of Controlsphere and Smoothsphere being combined, like the version you showed in aimlabs, so I actually ended up making a version of it in Kovaaks; it's called 'Psevsphere' and it's on the workshop, it's not the best since I have little experience making scenarios, but it does the job I think. I do actually have a question though, you mentioned when you have 25-30% accuracy, you should move up a tier of difficulty. Is this also true when you're practicing smoothness? Ex, if I'm averaging 40% accuracy on Smoothbot, but I'm using it for a smoothness warmup on say, 2x my sens, should I still move up a difficulty?

I come from MOBAs, I started playing Apex with a friend this summer. Started aim training around September iirc. I was absolutely terrible at Apex and at Kovaaks, tracking was my worst aspect by far. I tried Voltaic routines and I tried grinding the smooth tracking benchmarks to no avail. For me what worked was Valkyrie tracking routine. And I believe that for a newcomer is all that's needed, something simple. Tracking will always have a smoothness and a reactive component no matter if one is more exaggerated they are always present. I play on 40cm/360 now, not long ago I played on 30/360 and it didn't really help, tracking was just easier on a higher sens and it didn't help me when switched to my lower sens but this might be due to me playing with fingers and wrist only for years so arm aiming was alien to me. I also think that bothering with different sensibilities is more of a cherry on top for already great aimers that want to be well rounded, newcomers don't need that, we need the fundamentals. Some key insights that helped my tracking where: -Relax hand at all costs -Glue your eyes to the bot -When the bot changes directions there is a little pause where you have to stop, games usually have this too -Confidently follow the bots movement as if it's not going to change direction (as said in the video) even tho it's gonna do it -Readjust without overreacting, play with it -Follow the bot with the intention/feeling of stopping (hard to explain) -Move less, the bot sometimes is not moving that fast you are just making it much more difficult by overreacting -Do not spam the scenario run after run back to back, take small breaks between runs. You will tire your hand and it will be harder or impossible to practice properly -Lastly, and this applies to all scenarios, a lower score but a greater feeling of control run is ALWAYS superior to a higher score with worse feel. A tense jittery 5k score is detrimental to improvement, a smooth and well performed 4k score is beneficial to improvement. You are playing to achieve mouse control, mouse control above everything else. Uncontrolled=bad. Also as said in other of your videos watching top score plays on KZfaq, it helps a lot to watch what it should look like. Mind you I'm still pretty bad at aiming I'm just giving my perspective as a relatively new FPS player, also interestingly focusing on tracking and on smoothness and mouse control made me go from barely bronze on dynamic clicking to almost plat in all 3 Voltaic benchmark scenarios for dynamic clicking. Maybe this guide is just for more advanced aimers, but I just felt like sharing as someone that was hardstuck bronze in Voltaic benchmarks for a while and frustrated because there was no improvement made and I'm sure there are more people like me.

i've actually discussed that in my Aim FAQ (I believe) - I haven't seen one method over another being more or less superior, so I would just do what works for you as long as you are focused and attended. most people will break it up by aim area, but i've also seen top aimers that spend most of their time in one mechanic for long periods of time (weeks or more).

Hello, I haven't been learning proper technique all this time. So I'm gonna learn it properly now, I have a issue with learning step 4 of the smoothness technique. If you get on target, do you just try to see behind the crosshair or do you move your focus to somewhere else on the target?
@RiddBTW

highly suggest always watching the target to read the bot movement. you might visually see the crosshair in the same focus as the target but don't make it become the new object of attention if that makes sense

Hey Ridd, I have a question in case you do the commentary for this episode as well. You mention two aspects that I struggle with combining: crosshair uptime and smooth motions - which is more important? In other words, is it better to make sure that I keep making smooth movements with my mouse even if my crosshair is not actually on the bot or should I focus on having the crosshair on the bot, even if that means having more jittery aim?

@RiddBTW
@RiddBTW Жыл бұрын
i would say in general, avoid changing a sensitivity just because you're upset with your performance. most times your sensitivity is not at fault and focusing on that prevents you from focusing on what is actually important for improvement. focus on outcomes instead.
