On this reading I now have the first sense that the “miserableness” that soon overtook Bilbo “for a long while” was perhaps the very first act of the One Ring upon him in his admittedly already vulnerable state.

Finished reading the Hobbit to my 6 year old a liltte while back, and he immediately wanted to begin Lord Of the Rings. Life is so uncertain, I hope I get to finish reading these stories to him. Hi, I'm a recent fan of Brazil, your channel was recommended to me by KZfaq and it has been wonderful to follow your interpretations and readings of Tolkien, accompanied by a good pipe. My dad bought me the first Lord of the Rings when I was 10 years old, before the movies came out, since then I've been in love with everything he created. Seeing your passion for books and the room that you make your videos in is like stepping into a Hoobit's hole in the shire for a few minutes, thanks for the videos.

I first read the hobbit when I was 14 years old and read it several times again over three following few years. My last reading was when I was 21 years old. That 43 years ago. More recently I watched the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movie. After hearing your reading recently when I first came across your channel. You read the passage from when Bilbo first went into the mountain to see Smaug. And I realized how special it was to read the words from the book and much more meaningful it was to read the brilliant writing as only Tolkien could have done. I’ve been reading again as adult and see the wisdom and lessons we can learn and which are hidden within the pages. Thank you so much. BTW-also loved the beginning passage which you read recently from Phantasies. Brilliant and I’ve been seeking out a used copy of the book. And I may get into pipe smoking as well. Haha.

I watched this YT last month and it inspired me to get hold of a copy of The Hobbit and read it again. I read it between 2nd and 3rd grade the first time. Almost six decades have intervened since I first picked it up. I splurged on the fancy, well-illustrated 50th Anniversary Edition, and I’m reading one delicious chapter per evening. I am amazed at how much of it I remember from my childhood! Tolkien paints such vivid pictures that they lodged in my imagination and they float right back when I read the words anew.

I have recently found these videos. I cannot watch a one without imagining myself as the unspoken friend who arrives for the camaraderie of words and smoke. I ask humbly of you to talk about Watership Down. I am an eighth grade teacher--what I belive would be year 9 in the UK. I teach this book to my students to get us through the dull late winter months. It is a delight to see them sparkle with the joy of the story and grasping, perhaps for the first time, what grownup understanding can be taken from a childlike fantasy. I am sure your insights would be of value to the world.

"For reading, lately, I have re-read the Faerie Queene with enormous enjoyment. It must be a really great book because one can read it as a boy in one way, and then re-read it in middle life and get something very different out of it--and that to my mind is one of the best tests." So humorous you brought up such a subject, as I have again picked up Christopher Morley's works to read over with "tired" eyes. I never would have believed I missed so much nuance in something I read so eagerly and blindly. Especially the details on the relationships in Parnassus on wheels. I never detected any measure of impatience or desperation until getting older. Time ripens all things! - especially a wee dram which I'll have since you are, Sláinte
