On "My Car Story" we're in Chicago on 5-15-16.
We're looking at a 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda Convertible with all matching numbers 426 Hemi Engine, and with a Manual 4 Speed Pistol Grip Hurst Shifter.
The car's Owner is Tom Lembeck. Muscle Car Collectors who purchase Hemi Cars, would list this car as one of the rarest, and most desirable Hemi cars in the world.
Today…we take the car out for a ride.
ENJOY!

@@tomnatortomnator883 Living like that is stupid. Machines (Cars) are rebuildable & replaceable, people are not. That’s like saying I’m never taking my child or loved one out of the house because they might get hit or killed, and they are Irreplaceable, so I’ll just keep them at home forever. People gotta live and cars gotta be driven!

I bought a 1976 Dodge Charger Daytona back in 2009 from a man in Tampa, FL with only 19,000 original miles for an astounding price of only $4500 and I brought it home (drove it back to SC) and fixed a few items that were out of sync and took it to a couple Mopar shows and took 1st place at both shows and I also drove it very sparingly as I was always terrified that it would get a parking lot ding or get into a fender bender so I put it away for a short while inside a garage. Not long after I got into a bit of a money crunch and decided to sell her to someone who might be better equipped to take care of her (sold it for $5000 to a great Mopar collector out of Greenville, SC) and have regretted it ever since!! It was a 2 color Daytona and was a kind of similar gray to this cuda with a darker shade of Grey in the two tone Daytona scheme of that year ('76) w/factory wheels (that I really wasn't fond of but the originality was nice) and had a 400/4 bbl and torgueflite 727. I really enjoyed the car for the 2 yrs I owned her and I sincerely miss the car and seeing your video of the 'Cuda just made me think about her and I enjoyed the video very much!! Super rare example of the King of collectible muscle cars and it being a Mopar only thrills me to know!!! Thanks, keep up the good work!!

@garywood9525
@garywood9525 6 жыл бұрын
It changes based on the Sunlight and angles . From the side at a distance it did look gray but at times I saw a light blue which I see on cars that is named some kind of tropical aqua shade ...it also looks like a light silver with a mild blue hue. There was also a late 1950's early 60's Chevy full size car that had a light Green that was darn close to this car when I saw the view looking down the body panel. I can't see driving this car in the City if it had a 4:88 rear because the massive torque could start the car in 2nd but the tires would break traction at 30 mph if you hammered the gas too had. In a different video....Tom mentioned that a 2:73 rear was in the car for the long highway drive in Europe . My guess is that it was also for the Autobaun in Germany to take it up to 160 mph or higher with special high speed rated tires. It sure would have been nice as a tourist to being doing 140 and then see this HEMI cuda over take us at 160 mph while seeing the Hemi Billboard . A hemi superbird on the autobaun doing 170 would be really impressive.

In an earlier video of this car it was noted that it had a rare manual top as well since that was normal in Europe. The reason that Goldfinger had the Mustang convertible was because of its status symbol for a V8 to handle the mountains while gas was expensive , plus imported Amercian convertibles were power operated and weather proofed for rain and winter. The manual tops on sports cars were really bad for rain and cold weather plus they had a 4 cyl or 6 cyl , Americans cars were popular because the post-war Troops in these nations would buy a car via the PX to be shipped over there and seen driven around. Soldiers got the discounted gas on the Military base which why they got muscle cars and V8's , after their tour the car would be shipped home to the USA via Military Cargo planes . Not sure why a French men would want a beast like that which sucks the fuel and melts the tires up to 3rd , unless he like the BOSS 429 or 454 Corvette but wanted a soft top with a manual 4 spd and could order power windows.

i must have seen a really odd HEMI cuda back in 1973 because my friend spotted it parked on the south side or a major street where i had seen it during the summer a year earlier. It was yellow with white interior and a white soft top that was down at that time , but the billboard was white and the HEMI portion didn't stand out . The dash and carpet plus console were black and it had an automatic . I can't see why someone would fake a hemi convertible and have the HEMI shaker scoop if it was a 440. The Cuda expert I emailed had insisted the car didn't exist because the Chrysler records showed that all were accounted for and there wasn't a yellow Hemi convert with a automatic and white billboard . But this was parked in Toronto, Canada and it had a mechanical tach mounted to the left of the speedo and easily read through the steering wheel spokes. My friend saw these car in California at drag strips and he knew the hemi cuda died and that he saw the 1970's eat up the strip . The mechanical tech was explained to me to be an accurate gauge for the real rpm and to shift an automatic dead-on for maximum torque and not blow up the engine by trusting the analogue needle driven by the ignition coil. I did see a hemi cuda with the same front end as a 1971 and it was yellow with the auto and shaker scoop whiel the white top was down .

Thanks, I did my own research and in 1971 all of the Roadrunners were Imported to Canada from Detroit or St.Louis but my guess is that Detroit was used because Windsor , Canada was across the River and so was the Chrysler Plants that ship by truck and rail going East to Montreal and Toronto which were the 2 biggest Cities for buyers. But in 71 the Cuda WAS built in 2 US States as well as and in Windsor for the Canada market. The Cuda expert was galengovier.com/ but he only claimed that all of the US Hemi cuda's produced were recorded plus the few for Export. My friend that saw the 71 Hemi Conv that caused me to stop and look is still alive to confirm it . It would have been built in Windsor and shipped to Toronto with no record for the US production buy included in the N.American sales numbers. I never saw that Cuda in the winter , but when i did see it the odd time at that coffee shop it would made sense for why i didn't see HEMI on the side when it was light yellow ( i think it's Sunfire yellow) with the White Billboard on top of me not being close enough to see 426 on the shaker hood scoop . My friend told me that when he was in California he had seen HEMI's on the street with factory tires and they would break traction and smoke the tires while cruising at 40 mph just by flooring the gas pedal . The drag races had stock cars with normal tires where the driver would Dial In a time and try to match it each run to beat the others. My friend said that one hemi cuda almost went the whole 1/4 with a tire still spinning and leave smoke behind it .

@@loucostabile Thanks--I recall the story one of the Hemi Cuda convertibles was bought by a guy in France, and he raced it on road courses (as opposed to drag racing), and his car burned up sometime in the mid-70s. It was rebuilt using a replacement car, and it still didn't diminish the value of it as it was documented that the original car burned. I found the story interesting in that it was one of maybe two '70-'71 Hemi Cuda convertibles that were bought from new by people in Europe. The other one was a '70 version bought by the CEO of British Steel in UK. I believe both are in the U.S.
