Ride to a Volcano! | One of the Best Roads in the World | El Teide, Tenerife

Monika and I head up on the Triumph Bonneville to the volcano El Teide. At an altitude of 3,718 meters, it is the highest point in Spain. Even the road itself gets up to almost 2,400 meters high. It must be one of the finest driving and riding roads on earth. You can ride for over two hours through near uninterrupted, stunning scenery, with constant bends and twists, empty roads, beautiful surfaces, and way above the cloud line too!
We had views of La Gomera, and we did see if we could see La Palma and the erupting volcano, but unfortunately we couldn’t.
For car enthusiasts and motorcycle enthusiasts, this really is an experience of a lifetime to experience these roads.
This is the location for a lot of car and motorbike press launches, and it’s very clear why- the guaranteed good weather coupled with great roads and scenery make it perfect for launching new models.

I’ve always loved your little history tidbits while back in England (part of the reason I first subscribed. You don’t see too many history loving bikers on KZfaq) . Thanks for the vlog Freddie and Monika we loved it. Cracking music, great video. Me and Debbie went up mount Teide in 1979 whilst on our honeymoon and visited again 40 years later, we took photos in front of some of the rock formations you passed, the “finger of god” and the steps that you passed on the right were used in the 1956 film The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston as Moses. The black Obsidian rocks you walked over is made into Jewellery by the locals. Once again loved the Vlog. Thanks.

I love your videos, only discovered them recently it late to the party, but i find them scenic and the information you give is interesting. Mt Teide has more greenery now on the west side than it used to have, before you get to the lava area is a lovely woodland picnic area with a toilet block, we had a picnic there, but through covid they planted 2.000 trees! I love the ride to Teide it is so diverse and never seems too busy on the roads either. Great video :D

Hi Freddie, those what you call 'sand' are just volcanic ashes and erosive debrises from the rocks around due to the wind. The green rocks you saw near the road are produced in some kind of volcanic eruptions in which water is involved.

Looking at retiring early. Tenerife is on the list but as an avid motorcyclist I think it is too small for me. Yes, there is this gorgeous road but after about 6 months you've seen all of them. Will stick to the mainland... going to have a look at the Algarve next week.

Hello again Freddie and Monica I am very happy that you continue to enjoy so much on my island. Yes, you really liked the route up Teide, from the southern part (which is the driest on the island), when you make the descent or ascent from the northern part (by La Esperanza TF-21 or by La Orotava TF- 24) you will not stop hallucinating. There you will see clearly how you go from a vegetation of medium height to that of high mountains. I recommend that you stop at several viewpoints on the TF-21, but be sure to visit the Chipeque viewpoint (it is the best view of Teide and the best northern part you will ever see; because if you are lucky you will be able to see the authentic sea of clouds ). By the way, know that the Canary Island pine is the only pine in the world that supports fire. Although you see its exterior burned, inside it continues to live, after one or two years, it will regain its leaves and little by little it will be like again. The famous stone on which everyone takes photos on foot of Mount Teide is not "El finger de Dios" (which was in Gran Canaria), it is "El Roque Cinchado". Indeed, when Christopher Columbus passed through Tenerife back to La Gomera in 1492, Tenerife had not yet been conquered by the Kingdom of Castile, they did it between 1494 and 1496 (Tenerife was the last island to be conquered by the Spanish). I think your GPS made an alternative route to the usual one (where the roads are actually much better). Ah I forgot to tell you that the two parts of the movie "Clash of the Titans" parts of them were recorded here in Tenerife (in Teide, Teno, Abades ...) Greetings. 😉

Hi, I don’t know if anyone has told as I haven’t read all the comments, what your seeing as a dry lake bed is know as the caldera viejo, your looking at the edge of the old volcano mouth it was in the past a much bigger volcano.

Another great video…thanks 👍 I’ve never been into motor bikes but watching this makes me realise what I’ve been missing…is it too late for a 57 year old with a really bad knee ?

Really glad you enjoyed it Alan!🙂. Absolutely it’s not too late- get a nice comfy cruiser motorbike that’ll be kind to your knee and you you’ll be riding with comfort and ease!🙂🤘🏻🏍

@@FreddieDobbs you're not wrong; It's 370kg! I'm around the same height and weight as you (6"1 / 80kg), it's a bit of a struggle moving it around. BTW really loved the history lesson you gave on your last video (Guanches). Tenerife looks beautiful.

The chances of it happening on Tenerife are remote. Also, Tenerife is one of the larger islands and so any eruption is unlikely to affect the whole island. I think you can rest easy. So enjoy yourselves while you have this wonderful opportunity.

Enjoyed that, thanks. You are right about lava being molten rock -- it is in fact molten rock that has reached the earth's surface and flowed out. Molten rock that is underground is called magma.

Hi Freddie, we are heading to Tenerife on Sunday 16th for two weeks, staying in Puerto De La Cruz and looking to rent a bike for some of that period to do some exploring. I have a friend, Peter Watters, married to a Tenerife lady, they have an apartment just north of PDLC, they flew in last week for 23 days, he is a fellow biker and will renting a bike with us to do some exploring. I have sent him a link to your channel. He is over there quite often and he says it would be great to link up with you some time. Hopefully, we can arrange to meet while we are there.

Wiki says El Teide is 3.5km tall from sea level but 7.5km tall from the sea bed. The biggest issue for residents isn't eruptions but landslips down to the sea.

Sorry to disagree. We have had many eruptions in the islands, having now one in La Palma and a submarine one a couple of years ago in El Hierro, but no landslides. The soil is very rocky and solid beneath the dirt.
