The firefighter drivers parking skills are so incredible. They know exactly where to park their trucks down to the last inch so their outriggers have a chance to clear between two very tightly parked cars..
@keithchristner4522

It also helps that modern fire trucks also have cameras at the outrigger points so the driver can see if he has enough clearance while he parks. Great tool, helping great chauffeurs.

The black hose seen in this video is not hard suction hose. The real hard suction can be seen on the side of the engine in its storage racks. This type of hose is specifically designed for very tight connection areas between the engine and the hydrant. The FDNY is not the only city that uses this type of hose. Being a retired chauffeur myself (not FDNY)this hose is designed to be kinked into tight positions and will always straighten out when pressure is applied. Longer or softer type of hose would have kinking issues. I am not sure but I think FDNY uses 3 or 3 1/2 inch.

Sometimes they have to draft from their hydrants. The soft suction would collapse. This is why they use hard suction.
@hihfty
@hihfty 3 жыл бұрын
@@hngbones In no situation ever do you draft from a hydrant, thats how you have main collapses. You cant suck more water out from a hydrant if it is not already readily available. The "hard suction" that you are seeing is more of a maneuverable rubber. The rigid hard suction is what you would use for drafting.

They are called traffic signal pre-empters. PA has pre-empters across the entire state and I'm sure others do as well. EMS, Police and Fire can activate them and it will switch the light in front to green and the rest to red. It's literally an easy fix. NYC with its huge budget should have had it years ago.

It's not legal to follow behind an emergency vehicle , you have to keep your distance at all times. And following behind a responding emergency vehicle is never safe because they are able to go through red lights so if someone is attempting to follow then that would just put the individual in danger.
