Previously using Scorpion for about 2 years. Removed the peak due to vibration in highway ride. Love the internal dark visor. Now using Arai. It fits perfectly after removing the 5mm liner. Been using it a year for city ride and highway ride. Good ventilation and great aerodynamic without vibration at highway speed using the peak. Tested on bikes with and without windscreen. Will continue using it. Both dual-sport helmet need to wear ear plugs for long hours of riding comfort.

BMW F750 GS, upgraded long windshield, Krios helmet, 6 foot 200. Used to ride in the late 80s, started riding again, and love it. Had to do my education and family, the medical profession, now retired and can enjoy life to the extreme. Was surfing before all over the coast of Calif. and now enjoy riding.

I am 6’3” and use a Shoei Hornet X2 on my 1250GS with the stock windshield. It is a great fitting helmet and quiet, but I do feel the weight a bit on my neck after a long ride, which may be due to my cervical disc fusion. I will be looking into the Klim next season since it is so much lighter. Great review, very informative!

I have the Klim Krios, considering upgrading to the pro. I have a 2020 Africa Twin Adv Sports, and I’m 6’3. The stock windshield on my Africa twin in the high position (which is where I have it on the highway at higher speeds) perfectly shoots the wind over the visor of my Klim helmet! In the low position I get some buffeting but I usually only have it low when I’m just cruising around town or off-road

I have the Shoei Hornet in a large, and ride a 2020 Africa Twin AS. I have the same thought about Shoei, that helmet just fits perfect very little wind noise. And with the way they designed it to flow wind it never jerks my head around even on really windy days. I have a Shoei dirt bike helmet also there just the best in my book. I did try the Bell when I first got my ATAS and it fit nice but the liner wore out pretty fast and the vents rattled and was super loud! the Face shield never really sealed up very well ether.

I am currently wearing a Nolan N70-2 X, medium but I have been eyeing the Scorpion EXO-AT950. I am just shy of 5'10", 205lbs, 30" inseam. In the right boots I can just flat foot either of my bikes but it's a stretch. I ride a 2016 Concours 14 and a 2021 Honda CB500X. I put 5,000 miles on the CB500X this summer touring the Western U.S. States and National Parks with my family. I added the small puig clip-on windscreen to the oem windscreen in it's raised position. Rain protection is minimal but buffeting is not an issue for me.

I have the EXO AT950 and yes, I chose it for the ideal price and being a modular type, since I wear eye glasses now as I don’t need to take off my glasses to remove the helmet. Also as you said it’s easier to talk to people when they see your face and eat/drink with the helmet on. My first modular was a Nolan (N92?) A nice helmet with great aerodynamics and lightweight was the LS2 pioneer but it had the fixed chin bar. Modulates also tend to be more roundish and so with its face. shield which likes to accumulate the rain in your vision plain, unlike the LS2 (or other fixed chin bar) helmets which have sharper ‘leading edge’ The EXO AT950 I have has a problem securing/locking due to a pin that works lose, apparently occurs with others who have the EXO (from talking to them) I am 5’10” with a 32 inseam and regular torso to leg distribution. I ride an 2018 Africa Twin now with great weather protection but had a Husky TR650 strada and a KTM 640 adventure which I gave up on when I turned 60 (lookin for comfort) due to the lack of weather (windshield) protection. So I don’t know about buffeting differences as my previous bikes had zero protection. First full face helmet was a Bell Star and a Simpson for MX/trail riding (80’s-90’s)

I use XD4. My Africa Twin model is pre-snell rated but my newer XD-4 Vision model is snell rated. The muzzle of the snell rated version is shorter than the old model. The chin bar presses further onto my chin. It’s not an issue but the helmet does feel different.

I use the At950 on a 2020 Tiger 1200 with the stock windshield. I ride with the screen all the way up and there is no buffeting. I’m 6’ with a 33” inseam. Love the helmet although after 6-8 hours it can feel a bit heavy. The features are nice for the money. Got three years out of it and it’s still my go to. Cardo Packtalk black works great in it.

And it used to be (I thought) that it was forbidden (illegal?) to accept returns of helmets, even if the tags and such still remained in tact. For safety reasons. Maybe that has changed, but thanks for the note, and yea, everyone's comments will help fewer wrong-size shipments from happening.

Scorpion EXO AT950 here. I am a 62YO male rider at 5'6" with a 32-inch inseam. I ride a BMW R1200GSA Low and Honda CRF250L Rally - both with stock windscreens. Compared to my Shoei Neotec II road helmet, the Scorpion EXO AT950 adv helmet has a bit more buffeting while riding either bike. I eventually got used to it just by riding more and getting movement-specific muscles around my neck a little stronger. One thing I would add: Off-the-bike "land drills" become even more important (i.e. strength and flexibility exercises) as you age and become a more "mature" rider. Cheers! P.S. The Scorpion EXO AT950 runs small, so I ordered a size up. I believe the shell sizes from L to 3XL are all the same, so you can make adjustments by ordering the appropriate liner that fits you the best.

I’ve have a shoei hornet x2 all black and riding in south Texas summers no complaints. I’ve had it for 5 years now and it’s time to upgrade. Looking for something modular. I ride a vstrom 650 xt and the windscreen even on the highest setting doesn’t redirect the wind over my head so I catch all the wind with my helmet but the vented visor really helps with head stability at Highway speeds. My only complaint is the stock shoei visors have little plastic plugs that fall out eventually and cause a lot of wind noise.

I've used the Shoei, the Klim and now the Arai, and by many reasons this last is the bes making an average, Shoei is perfect fit, bot noisy and heat, Klim extremely light but so noisy and not so much aerodynamic, Arai isn't the best on all, but it make it so correctly and the perfect fit interior puts in other level the helmet Really I miss don't have for it the photocromatic visor as has the Klim and Shoei that really runs TOP! I always wear a large Shoei helmet. They just fit me like glove. Decades ago as pro Flat Tracker I wore Bell Star helmets. A slogan that Bell coined, “If you have $10 head wear and $10 helmet, otherwise wear a Bell”. That Philosophy has driven to always wear darn good helmets. I wear the Hornet X2 sitting on a Triumph Tiger 1200 with stock windshield.

6' 1" and 250 lbs (34 in inseam), riding a T7 with the taller wind screen from Rally Raid (huge improvement in wind noise)! Helmet is a modular style, HJC in size L. Snug, but well fitting helmet with a drop-down sun screen. Two complaints, sizing charts are not even close, need to go up at least one size, if not two. Second is that the cheek pieces are too snug even with the proper head size. There again, need cheek pieces from helmets two sizes up, and I do not have over-sized cheeks! This helmet is a great budget option....would benefit from the addition of a sun visor! Great video, team!

I have both the Arai and Shoei. Riding a KTM 790 Adventure. I wear Shoei in the colder days because of the pinlock. Shoei has the better fit for me compared to Arai but slightly heavier and more noisy. Arai is for warmer days because the ventilation is better (still fogs though in cooler days), also it feels more quiet and definitely lighter. Arai is also more of a conversation piece than the Shoei, if you like showing off :-)

I've had my Shoei Hornet X2 for about 6 years now. I love it. It is incredible for anything on the road, and for all but technical off roading. The sound proofing works really well, the fit is very comfortable, the peak design is rather ingenious and doesn't catch wind unless you turn your head sharply. One of the only downsides is it doesn't move much air. It's fine if you're bombing along, but if youre do more technical, slow speed stuff, especially when it gets warm... you'll be soaked. It's also rather heavy, which is good for bombing along, but not so good if you're getting technical and looking down to plan your line, your neck will be sore. Overall 9.5/10, I love mine and the pure white looks sharp and catches the eye! I ended up buying the Bell on this video as well for when it is hot out.

Great content. I do have tinitus. Middle ear damage apparently to long term higher noise exposure like ‘life in a helmet’. I’ve had an Arai XD4 for 10 yrs and I’m getting concerned about “aging out” so I’m shopping for a replacement. Build quality is primary criteria followed by fit and then quietness. My helmet size is 7 3/8” (Lg). Dimensions: 6’1” , 34” inseam, 190lbs (87Kg). Riding a 2022 KTM 1290 SAR. Ride style includes: gravel roads, asphalt, single track, 3/4 seasons so all temperature and weather except winter. I have other bikes and use Bell Moto for Enduro and trail and a Klim Krios with winter kit for Snow biking. I had to make some foam adjustments for my forehead ‘horns’ in the Arai XD4. I have a high spot in the center of my head that has caused discomfort in some of my helmets. It didn't occur to me to slightly depress the eps foam; what I did instead was use some half inch wide window sealing foam strips, foam with tape on one side, and put a 3 inch length on the eps liner on either side of my high spot. Now my high spot fits between the two foam strips, and with it between the comfort liner and the eps, I can't even tell anything is there.

I have an Arai XD4 and I've owned Shoei's in the past though not recent models. I ride a naked adv bike (Triumph Scrambler XE) so get wind full on in my face. Arai is comfortable and pretty much no neck fatigue so good in two really important respects. Not so good is the whistle from the peak at certain speeds unless my head is angled a certain way; wind noise in general; the visor doesn't open very high so is in the line of site when open which is really annoying; the visor is a pain to take off/swap due to the screw system. Overall a class helmet but I'd like to try the Shoei too if i get a chance. I've tried my mate's Schuberth which is really nice but I'm not really in to flip tops and the price is something else.

What I love in this helmet: it’s modular, dark shield inside activated with either hand (the switch is on top), fresh. It’s the best rated modular helmet in Sharp test, including the resistance to open in case of a crash. It’s cheaper than most of the helmets you show there, and already includes a Pinlock from factory. The only drawback is it’s noisier than no modular helmets, but I use earplugs or IEM Shure SE215 wired phones to my gps (hate to charge more things) so when using any of them noise is not a problem. Safety, features, comfort! You should check it out. Best regards

Cristiano, thanks for sharing and commenting : ) We'll keep an eye open for the Caberg. Just not a brand we come across very much here in Oregon (or the rest of the U.S. I believe for that matter.) Have seen them in Europe and South America though. RIDE on!

Medium Large sized AGV AX9 Helmet, on a KTM 1290 SAR standard screen, usually in the high position on the road. 5'10 tall - no idea what my inseam is or how to measure it, but my pants are always standard length and I never need to have them adjusted for cuff length etc if that helps.

I’m 6’4” tall, more torso than legs. Ride a KLR 650 with a V Stream aftermarket windshield, also a Super Tenere with a Puig aftermarket windshield. Recently purchased the EXO AT950. Previous helmets have all been Shoei, as Eric says “they just fit”. Found the AT950 not to be my head shape size, which is round oval. Helmet is more of an oval, or so it seems to me. Shoei size for me is XL. Bought the AT950 in an XL as well. Experienced pressure points on the forehead and at back of head. While helmet has nice features I found the drop down sun visor optics to be less than optimal. Overall a good helmet for the price, just not a good fit for me.

Excellent video, as always. A couple of other helmets I'd like to see reviewed are the Icon Airflite Jewel with MIPS and the LS2 Explorer Carbon. The Airflite Jewel has MIPS, a detachable peak, and internal flip-down sunshade. The only negative is that you can use the windscreen OR the peak, but not at the same time. The LS2 Explorer Carbon has a quick-release chin strap, an internal flip-down sunshade, and a pin-lock windscreen. I think both of these helmets offer a lot of value.

I also got the LS2 carbon Explorer. I'm not a fan of it. Shell way to big in size. Came with rust on inside components. The black flip down visor broke on the first ride. The lower foam parts regularly come loose. I rate this helmet as pure trash

I have the Scorpion AT950 helmet and use NoNoise brand ear plugs. I will keep this setup till it's time to get a new helmet, then I may get the latest version. I ride a 1998 Honda TransAlp 600XL with Oem visor, eng guards and paniers/ topbox. I ride 80%road/ 20% offroad. This is commuter bike mainly. Plan on riding Florida - Alaska round trip when I retire 7yrs from now. The return trip I will pickup the Trans America Trail in Oregon.

This is my second season with the Scorpion. Riding a T7, 5'8', 30" inseam standard seat, stock windshield. A fair bit of buffeting at speeds higher than 40mph. The issue mentioned about it affecting vision became part of this buffeting at about 60mph. I installed a kit to allow raising the windshield higher and that resolved it. I use earplugs most of the time but the noise isn't bad now that the buffeting issue is resolved. Definitely not the coolest or lightest helmet offroad but I agree with the bang-for-buck point of view.

I also have a T7 and I'm about the same measurements as you. I wear an older generation Shoei. The buffeting is annoying. What kit did you use to raise the windshield? Also, did you have to fill in the gap under the windshield once you raised it?

4 years ago, not knowing much about helmets, got myself a Shoei Neotec. Fantastic helmet! Changed a few bikes and eventually got myself a BMW R1200GSA. The helmet and the bike work really well together, now looking for a new helmet, adv style (of course) Everything Eric said about Shoei is absolutely spot on. Quiet, well vented, comfortable on long rides. I will probably get the Shoei Hornet, perhaps the X3 is on the way?

I have the same helmet and bike. I live in the Deep South, USA. The helmet doesn’t flow enough air in the blistering heat and humidity down here. It’s fine when the temperature is 70 degrees F or cooler. My only other gripe is that my ears get very sore after a long day of riding from the pressure from the helmet. Mine is fitted with a Cardo comms system. That isn’t what’s making my ears hurt though. My ears hurt the same before the Cardo was installed. It feels like the ring of padding around the speakers are to thick and start putting pressure on the tops and back of my ear lobes after about the 5-6 hour mark. It’s not unbearable but it hurts like the devil when I go to take the helmet off. It’s a very comfortable helmet otherwise. I thought the weight would be a problem due to a bulging disc in my neck from being rear ended by an idiot driving while surfing FaceBook on his phone. It has not been an issue for me and I just drove the bike 850 miles in a two day trip. I also love the bayonet style or whatever it’s called buckle system on the Shoei. It’s fast and easy to use unlike the double D-rings used on a lot of other brands. I tried a Krios Pro but the sizing apparently runs kinda small on them. I wear an XL in the Shoei but the Klim was painfully tight in the same size. It’s a super high quality helmet and super light. It just didn’t fit me and they didn’t have a 2xl for me to try on. The magnetic latch thing is a thing of beauty. I love my GSA. It’s just a spectacular bike.

Got the same "issue". Wanna swap from Neotec to the Hornet, because it suits better with my multistrada v4s. Could you say something about your experience a year later now? I either buy a Hornet, otherwise ill get a Neotec 3.y

@@bjrnchrstn well, in the meantime I did some research and tried a few helmets, and finally got an Arai XD4. Lighter and better ventilated (important at slow speeds), it fits my head shape better, it looks amazing, as well. It is also Snell rated. No drop-down visor though(😭). I think you need to try all of them before deciding which one to buy. Looks are important, however the functionality and comfort should prevail. Happy shopping!

I've had one for 4 years now. The only downside is if you ride hard off-road for hours, you get some neck strain. But the adjustable vents, the internal sun shield, unbeatable.

My first Modular Helmet was A Shark EVO 1-2. When a pickup truck hit me at around 40 mph and as I was thrown off the bike my head hit the pavment bouncing I decided to retire it and bought Scorpion EXO-AT950 (I bought it around 3 years ago). Both the those helmets were really too heavy in that they gave me neck pain if not the same day of riding definitly extreme neck pain the next day. Recently I bought two new helmets, the Aria XD4 and the AGV Sport Modular Helmet. Not sure which one I prefer yet since it has been cold, like mostly 20-35 Degrees +/-, where I live, so not done any riding much yet with those two helmets Though those two helmets fit me like a glove and are light enough to not cause me any neck pain (as of yet). The Arai does not have an interior drop down/up sun shade (kinda of disappointed that the feature is not inside the Arai, but the AVG does have it but no Sun visor sigh ...). The Klim Krios Pro has caught my interest due to its light weight claim and it is modular with a transitional face shield. So it might be the next helmet I will purchase. just saying

The problem with picking a helmet is that most dealerships don’t carry adventure helmets. They may be dealer of the brand you’re interested in, but don’t have a model to try. You have to order, compare, return, repeat.

I bought a Shoei Hornet X2. My head is exactly 23.5'' which made sizing tricky, medium was snug but *very* hard to get on and off. So I ended up going with a large and wanted to add the thicker cheek pads, but their out of stock everywhere...

I have the Krios (non Pro version). I am 5'8" with a 30" inseam. I ride a 2014 BMW R1200GS. I use both the stock windshield and a Puig Touring windshield with zero buffeting issues. I normally wear a Large helmet in Bell and Schuberth. I went with a Medium Krios, as they run a bit large. The Medium fits perfectly. Overall, this is a comfortable helmet with great visibility and good venting.

Ls2 Pioneer in 4xl. Very noisy helmet and the peck catching wind guest. I am 5 foot 6inches tall and large in the waist, hell I am fat. I do have a large torso and shortish legs so my 2019 Suzuki v-strom 650 is very tall for me. Thank you for giving us a different prospective on my favorite style of helmet.
