Find our rankings here: torquetestchan... Ryobi: homedepot.sjv.... Ridgid: homedepot.sjv.io/XxvKj3 Today we return to ratchets because Ridgid has come out with their first swing at bat with cordless ratchets, the R866011 3/8" 18V Brushless Cordless Ratchet. Is it any good, is it better than the Ryobi PBLRC25 at least? The specs seem to mirror the new DeWalt pretty close, so we take a closer look.

I'm just happy to finally see dewalts name mentioned in a cordless ratchet test. Took them too long to release one. Although the Mac tools cordless ratchets can use dewalts batteries but they were pricey due to the Mac branding.

Agreed. It makes sense here, as Ridgid is only 18V (at the moment) so it's their only option. But can't glean any benefits from it, and appears to come with a higher cost. Curious about DeWalt making both 12 and 20V then, what's to gain. Likely just people already owning the battery type it appeals to.

@gf2e 2 жыл бұрын
Given that DeWalt’s two battery platforms are rectangular, seems like it might’ve been nifty if they could made it so that some tools could take both batteries. I have a Ridgid inflator that takes an 18v battery or a cigarette lighter adapter.

@@james10739 With the way most (all?) brushless controllers work, you could make a design that worked properly at 12v but choose electronic components with a higher voltage and current spec. Basically, when the voltage was higher, it would send shorter pulses to the motor. Brushless controllers already actively adapt pulse length based on how much torque is needed, so it wouldn’t really be any different than that. I don’t know the price points or BOM costs etc, so I’m not sure if the increased cost would be problematic or not.

I've had the Ryobi for a few months now and have been satisfied, though I had no experience with the other brands to compare to. I agree that battery is a bit awkward, but one thing that keeps me coming back to Ryobi is their long term standardization of batteries. My first Ryobis (nearly 20 years ago) had much weaker batteries but they take the new genarations batteries just fine... consistency in cordless tools is very important to me, I've acquired about 9 batteries which I use in rotation with all my tools.

Big selling point for me too.. i dont want to have 15 dewalt tools just to get shafted by some new battery model and i need to change all my tools.. Ryobi is clearly sticking to it's guns and i can buy batts for my tools as long as they last with out worrying about possible battery fitment issues in the future. i am suprised how long my ryobi 1+ batts and tools have lasted. been over 5 years since i got 2 5 amp batts and the 400nm bolt gun.. Still turning rusty bolts like new and it is actually the strongest gun i have tryed. even opened rusty bolts that a makita 700nm gun could not open. the hammer strike fast in ryobi and the big makita have a slower hammer that is better for sinking big screws in to wood but not so good with rusty bolts.. i also have milwaykee m18 drill and it feel stronger than my ryobi brushless drill but the ryobi fits my hand so much better and have a better balance..

Been using the Milwaukee M12 quite a bit, and it’s hard to find fault with it. Given that the main use I have for a cordless ratchet is when space is an issue (otherwise I use an impact or my Mac Tools air ratchet), I don’t think I could justify purchasing the larger tools. They would have to offer crazy high speed or some other party trick, like a flexible head or programmable torque settings.

my apologies, the reason I could get was that they had to change their tools to follow what's wanted from TTi. So you can most likely assume that they didn't want to take away from Milwaukee's sales and since ridgid tools are literally just Milwaukee tools with weaker and cheaper internal parts, why take away from the highest selling brand in your umbrella of tool brands. My TTI rep told me this and I reached out to their higher ups and all I could get was they needed to redo their brand. My TTI rep for Ridgid said that they were told not to say much and give out a generic answer.

Be Careful!!, A some years ago, Rigid tools came out with the 12v models of their electric tool line. There was a multi-tool version that had one main motor segment and additional tools that connected to the main motor unit. There was a 90 degree drill, 90 degree impact driver, 90 degree 3/8 ratchet, and a vibrating blade saw. Then they added a saber-saw unit. These tools were compact and powerful even at 12 volts and they had a definite use in the general construction business. Then they came out with a larger, higher amp 12v battery that allowed the tool to stand upright . The 12v series also had a pistol grip style drill and impact driver. These were good, powerful tools that touted 'LIFETIME' WARRANTIES. Recently, Rigid killed off all 12v products and there is no recompense for your lifetime purchase. One cannot even buy 12v batteries for your existing-remaining tools. Rigid abandoned their initial customers in favor of creating a new line of 18v larger, more cumbersome models. Now Rigid is trying to 'suck in' a whole new group of construction tool users. Be careful, they will abandon all you new 18v tool owners within a few years. It's all about the corporate money/income. Don't be fooled. Buy Milwaukee or DeWalt or Ryoby.

I got introduced to Cordless Rachets by Project Farm's video. As a result bought the cheapest eBay 12v ratchet sold under a dozen names on eBay. I bought it with running the M8 and M10 manifold nuts on 4 cylinder Rover K engines in mind. The tool cost pennies, not much torque but it is slim compact perfect for nut running on M6, M8, M10 and even M12. In the UK we don't get as much brand choice as in North America and new models take longer to be available but thanks for your work.

Sadly, for those of us that heavily invested in the JobMax line, Ridgid KILLED that one too, and its now darn-near IMPOSSIBLE to find any of the interchangeable heads, unless one is willing to pay highly inflated prices that far exceed the cost of a new tool. I have (and have gifted to my boys) a lot of Ridgid cordless tools, BUT, I've reached the point of knowing that Ridgid simply CAN'T BE TRUSTED!! - - They DROPPED the 12 Volt line, they DROPPED the JobMax Line, they DROPPED the Octane line, and they DROPPED the MegaMax (of which I'm am also heavily invested!) line! Ridgid orange‘s big selling point is Prosumer grade at good prices with the LSA warranty. In order to make this work, they have to mass produce as much as possible, which means minimizing the product line. Having separate 12 and 18 V tools is counterproductive to this strategy. I for one like it because I don’t have to buy separate batteries. Ridgid also prices their stuff high when they first release new products, to snag some of the dollars that wealthier customers are willing to part with. They lower the prices later for the rest of us, usually ending up 20 to 30% cheaper than Milwaukee for 80 to 90% of the performance, which is a good value, if you care about that.

Like you said, high torque ratchets slow down less which is exactly why I got it. I had the Milwaukee Extended Reach 55ft-lbs but the batteries would vibrate loose (on all of my Milwaukee Tools). The Snap-On 3/8 14.4V Impact is mediocre but the CT768 is so much better than anything else I tried for E-Ratchets. The head is so small, it's greaseable, comes with a protective boot, and you can put so much torque through it. It says only 158ft-lbs manual torque, most I've done by hand is like 220ft-lbs, just freaking hanging off the battery. My Aircat 805-HT puts out 130ft-obs at 180 rpm. Doing big suspension bolts with it where you can't get an impact is fantastic. I crack it loose with a breaker bar, then use the Aircat to run it out. If it's slathered in blue lock-tite it'll rip it right out but my 70ft-lbs Snap-On won't.

Nice to see my own experience with the Ryobi validated. I suspect most people will be happy with whichever tool matches their battery system, but I do not like the ergonomics of that rigid one bit.

I have the Earthquake XT 3/8 Ratchet. It is beefy/stout and has a lot of torque (brushed motor). Plus it's slim. I since bought into the Ryobi ecosystem of which I have 22 tools. I will definitely buy the Ryobi Ratchet when the other dies. Torque is most important to me.😃

The snap on brute extended reach ratchet would be awesome to see. Lots of power in my experience with busting fasteners loose with no ratchet assist.

I bought Ridgid maybe 5 years ago, when Gen5x was out. Very good tools at a good price. A lot less $$ the DeWalt or Milwaukee and nearly the same performance. Some nice features too, one hand chuck on the impact, nice lighting around the drill and impact. Octane came out and wasn't a big improvement. Since then it's been downhill IMO. The tools look and feel cheaper, there's nothing new or innovative. I might buy a subcompact for those tight spaces but that's it. These days I'd recommend Ryobi HP, Kobalt or Skil for the serious DIYer on a budget.

I purchased the Ryobi ratchet for my brother a few years back for christmas since he was already married to the Ryobi One battery ecosystem and he really likes the ratchet. He doesn't often work in spaces confined enough for the bulky battery pack to be an issue. One that I would like to suggest is what I call an Amazon Wonder Cheapie. Which is the "KIMO 3/8" Cordless Electric Ratchet Wrench" IT comes in at $89 before tax and comes with 2 packs, charger, a nifty case, etc. I'm currently not invested into any battery powered tool family just yet as I just borrow my brother's Ryobi stuff when needed but would like to have a battery powered ratchet of my own. I'd like to see how this Amazon find stacks up against the M12 which, by default, will be what i'm getting for the small-ish size. Edit - it only comes with two packs optionally but you can spec it with just one for $69 or the tool only for $39

The form factor is the most important for these and the large batteries throw that off. Comfort, mobility and speed are all much more important than sheer power on these nut runners. I’d even consider some electric toothbrush type ratchet with a plugless charging dock and fixed battery if it came meant the unit was compact and quick to use.

Not their first ever ratchet. I have owned a Rigid ratchet as part of the Jobmax system for more than 3 years. Works great. I can use it with all 3 power heads I have, 18v cordless, 110v corded, and the pneumatic powerhead.

I am happy with my M12 3/8" extended reach ratchet, especially with the 6.0 battery. The ergonomics are better than those of any of those other brands. The head could be smaller, but it's usually not a problem for me.

I’m a Milwaukee fan boy through and through but I use the snap on ratchets at work. Trigger is nicer than the lever, the 3/8 long reach will break free most fasteners I put it on with a “running” start. Expensive for sure, but I would love to see you test them.

My offer is still good if you need a modern new air powered ratchet, I got one (actually I got two 😎) you can borrow to test if it’s not TOO long in your secret mad lab, lol, it’s the red colored Mac Tools air ratchet with their new clutch system that’s supposed to prevent you from banging your knuckles when you reach the end of the threads on a fastener (really it just limits the power). Many say those cordless ratchets are “old technology” and when it comes to ratchets it’s the air ratchets that are getting the newest technology. I haven’t seen a clutch system in a cordless ratchet yet but my air ratchet does have it. Anyways, it’s Model#: MPF59038 by Mac Tools.

I wonder if Ryobi can ever get creative with the battery design/orientation. Though they take pride in keeping the same battery design over the years, they should really get that thing out of the way a bit. Awesome that your battery mount never changes. Not awesome that it prevents certain tools from operating at their best. Like the angle grinder. The battery makes it so you can’t get the grinder flat with the surface. They should find a way to flip it around or figure out some shape that can get tools like this into tighter spaces. I assume they’ll figure something out at some point considering battery tech/design/ergonomics is one of those things everyone on the Internet mentions as an issue with Ryobi. They seem committed to the probe design so 🤞 that they figure something out haha

I’m a milwaukee guy all day, 1/2 impact of course, drill, impact driver, 3/8 stubby, right angle die grinder, angle grinder….. but snap on wins in terms of cordless ratchets keep in mind I work in a mechanic shop I tried my coworkers Milwaukee ratchet and my other co workers snap on ratchet, and hands down snap on wins feels stronger and a way better design I have the newish brushless snap on ratchet and it is a beast plus the halo light on it is pretty freaking sweet.
