No brakes, No problem. The Red Bull Bay Climb is a straight line, uphill, with steep pitches of 21%. There are heats of 10, 4 qualify to the semis, then 2 advance to the finals.
I am running a 42/22, which, is not enough :) I show you in this cycling video my attempt at racing the fixed gear red bull bay climb. Riding fixed gear uphill with bros.

The winner of the men’s fixed final (me) used 47x22. My friend Josef, who finished second in the final, rode 47x20. He crushed me in our semi-final, but since we finished 1st and 2nd we both made the final. We were both also on SPDSL road pedals. He missed his clip-in at the start of the final otherwise he likely would have won the whole thing. I did not miss.

@@nonfictionone Just upgraded my touring bike to 39:34 low gear. Rode it up a nasty hill near my house, that rises 300 ft. with much of it at 23% - and a peak grade of 28%. Not much fun, but at least I came away with the elevation/grade data for it. That was only the second time I'd attempted the hill. The first was when I was much younger, and with a 39:27 low gear. My Achilles tendons were sore for two days afterwards.

No joke. I once had a 1962 Beetle. The owner's manual was actually useful, with specs like the maximum grade it could climb in each gear. IIRC, first gear could handle 21%, but not second. And yes, you'd need to really rev it up in first gear to go faster than these cyclists.

Nice set of videos on the fixed gear races. I thought about what you said in the end about the fixed gear community and the vibe. What's interesting is that the same thing happens in the endurance community and gravel community - although now that the UCI is involved in gravel that'll probably change. My theory is that when riding your bike becomes a "job" or "career" as it does in road racing, that's when you loose the community vibe. Think about it - what's on the line with the fixed gear race and hill climb? What are the stakes? Nothing really. With road racing you might loose your contract, which is your job and livelihood, when you don't perform. Or even if you do perform there might be political stuff within the team you have to deal with. With these events like the fixed gear series it's just fun and everything else is a bonus. Bikes for business or bikes for fun - you can have both but what's your priority? The answer determines the vibe.

The thing with track bikes is there’s really nowhere to hide, you either got it or you don’t. It really forces you to push through walls and find a rhythm with the bike. A road bike will always be more fun but a track bike is way more rewarding. 43 years old and still ride a brakeless track bike daily in Seattle!

I have a fixie that I ride as a SS. I felt I'm have pretty strong legs from my mountain bike which made my SS riding so much easier. Took a bike I was selling, converted it back to fixie and rode it around in front of my house. Tried to slow down (not skid, slow down) and the crank kicked me up and forward. Yeah, I'll stick with my SS. They are fun to ride, both fixie and SS because you don't have to think about going up or down in gears in relation to the hills, flats, stops, starts. You just get on and pedal. I love SS so much, I converted my cheaper mountain bike to a SS and just ride around town hopping curbs, cutting across fields, taking stair sets and rolling down grass/dirt/gravel hills. Seeing these SF vids is making me want to take a quick lap around my neighborhood even though I should be cleaning my house.
