It's a nice video - a region I'm familiar with but not in the time of day I was ever there. Something else: have you ever travelled on the Nishikigawa Railway (near Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture)? I recently discovered it via one of the very few cab videos from there, and I would very much appreciate a travel report showing more than the view ahead, which you excel in.

Very cool to see it from an outsider's perspective. Traveling around that region from time to time. Both train stations are really super busy during the day, as they are major hubs for switching trains. You were lucky to have such short delay. Usually you can often add +15 or +30 minutes when traveling during the day.

That train line is always super busy! But for why people might be taking a train at that particular time, I think the most likely is that it's easier to get cheaper tickets for those very late trains. Also, the train arrives in Hamburg early in the morning, perfect for a weekend trip or similar. It also makes it easy to use other trains, maybe towards Scandinavia. Lastly, maybe people went to a concert or similar event that ran until late and night and needed to take the train after 🙂 I live not too far from Stockholm now, but every time I stay late and need to catch the last train home, it's always very busy. It seems people stay out late if they get the chance to!

I have already used a number of ICE overnight. For certain dates or train tours, these connections are simply very good. Sleeping is difficult or possible with practice, but sometimes it's quite good. There is something magical about seeing the first rays of sunshine on a summer morning at a speed of 230 km/h 😊.

I think the most common reasons for taking the train so late are: - If you're busy in a city and can't leave sooner, it may make sense. For example, if you are at a concert until 9 p.m., then take the train at 10 p.m. and you are at home by 3 a.m. In this way you could save the money for a hotel. If I can sleep off the next day, I prefer that - Depending on where you start and where you want to go, a trip can take a long time. If you cannot leave before evening, you will arrive very late. On Friday evenings after work I like to take the train. Because then I'm very tired. So you don't mind sitting and watching videos. If I can check in at my hotel by midnight, I can start my vacation the very next day - Many sleeper trains have been dropped and replaced with normal trains - Train tickets for night journeys are often super cheap

Another reason quite a few people use these very late / very early train services is because they are much cheaper if you book in advance. Example: A standard one way trip from Munich to Hamburg is around 100 - 150 €. If you book in advance, you can get is as cheap as 17,90€.

I ♥ Düsseldorf! P.S. To the trains: The ICE is not arriving in Hamburg on the next morning but on the same day 😉! So the train is full - at least partly - due to the fact, that this train will arrive at the early business hours in Hamburg! Some passengers on this train may have arrived at Cologne Airport via low cost carriers (no night curfew there!) and are now heading home or other passengers may be travelling to Düsseldorf Airport to arrive on time for the many early departures there starting at 06:00 am!

I can try to answer your question about why so many people take the train at night: Since many of these people had suitcases with them, I suspect they wanted to catch a very early flight at Hamburg airport or have some business to attend to. The ICE 920 (the train you took) is the earliest train you can take (without connecting trains) to get to Hamburg Central Station. From there they would take an S-Bahn to the airport. By the way, the PRX trains run 24/7, which is pretty awesome. As fast as the ICE is, there aren't really many high-speed lines on the route between Cologne and Düsseldorf or almost the entire infrastructure in the Ruhr area, because you have to stop too often. During the day, the entire network is pretty heavily loaded, so it's just not worth it to go faster than 200 or 160 km/h.
@Travelagent
@Travelagent Жыл бұрын
I am quite sure that none of the passengers on this ICE is going to take an early morning flight from HAM!? I don't think HAM offers any destination you could not reach from DUS or - to a lesser extent - even from CGN! And even FRA-Airport would be much easier and faster to be reached!?

The ICE you described with the glass partition is ICE 3, which isn't the newest trainset. It has been in operations since 1999 with extensive renovations from 2017 and 2020, which probably gave you the impression of "newest" appearance. For anyone who wants to know more: the 300 km/h travel is only possible with ICE 3 Sprinter, which runs twice a day between Munich and Berlin. You can see the logo similar to "s>" next to the ICE number which is always 100x (1001, 1002, 1003, etc. Northbound is even number, southbound odd number). Mostly, ICE 4 trains are used for this route and could reach between 250 and 265 km/h, depending on the number of carriages.

German trains replace a lot of internal flights. The ICE would have had passengers arriving at Frankfurt-am-Main airport on intercontinental flights. They will then be continuing their journey to German cities along the route to Hamburg Hbf. It's the norm in Germany for trains to provide a 24/7 service.

Hello, I like your videos and I'd really recommend you to sometime take the ICE 3 train (train variant capable of 300km/h) from Köln to Frankfurt. This line operates at 300km/h and only ICE trains are allowed on it, making it less prone to delays compared to other lines, where ICE trains share the rails with regional trains. It's a really unique experience compared to many other ICE lines with great changes in elevation and good scenery. I'd recommend you to for example take an ICE Sprinter (Sprinter trains don't stop at every station, just the major ones) like the ICE 11 from Köln Hbf until Frankfurt Hbf.

Koln is a GREAT city. I did that journey at the end of 2021, but on Flixtrain. It cost me €3 one-way, and all I had to do was book a day in advance via the app, which was outstanding value. On the return I took the RXX as there was no suitable Flix to suit my time, but that only cost me €9 inc. local transport transfer either end for that journey. Flixtrain might be a bit uncomfortable for longer trips but for that short journey it was absolutely fine, and the RXX trains are realllly nice too. Wouldnt mind taking the ICE 1 before they retire them! Did you go to Bonn aswell? It's a very nice city, and there's loads of trainspotting opportunities at the level crossings between the quiet leafy streets.

Hi, the lights that illuminates the cologne cathedral als turned off at night due to the high energy costs at the moment. Because the cost for energy here in Germany are now so expensive at the moment. Normal customers payed in 2020 about 0,33€/kwh, and now it´s 0,50€/kwh and above. So they are turned off at night. The ICE (bullet train) is often crowded at night. You took the videos on Sunday to Monday (Aug 22, 2022), right? Many people are traveling over the weekend between Cologne and Düsseldorf within their long-distance relationship or something like that. They go back home on Sunday night by train, to be right on time for work the next morning. Or they als working perhaps in Hamburg (Mo-Fr) und still living in Cologne at the weekend. So they come on Fridays at home and leave for work at Sundays. Cologne ist one of the most impressive city in Germany and Europe, because of the very, very open mindset of the locals here (ok, all Düsseldorf´er people hates me now, but thats a special funny cultural thing between Cologne and Düsseldorf since the mid-age, you can google it). Not without reasons, is Cologne one of the hotspots for the movie an the TV industry. But the most people who moved to cologne and are living and working here (they´re affectionately called „imi“ = „enne imiteete Kölsche“, I can´t explain that in only a few words, please google it), they´ll tell you the same. I was born in cologne, I´m living here. I studied abroad, and worked for years in Düsseldorf, and traveled between Cologne and Düsseldorf. Once you are rooted here, you´ll not leave. Perhaps you can it compare with Munich, the „Oktoberfest“/ „Wiesn“, but it´s not really the same. If you´re next time in Germany, especially in Düsseldorf, try to take a view on the hole region. It´s hard too find such a varaity of different mindsets or menthalites within a distance from only 50-60km. That would be outstanding in the world. Stay a weekend in Cologne, take some vids, you don´t regret it. Did you have in Japan such differences in the regions too? Greet´s from Cologne

I last took the ICE (just last month) from München to Nürnberg and vice-versa. Both of them ran horribly late. We also took a regional train from Regensburg to München and we were rerouted into multiple train + bus rides because of some technical rail issues along the way, making a supposedly 1-hour trip into a chaotic 4+ hour claustrophobic journey. As much as I enjoyed Germany, the trains left much to be desired. Such a disappointment for a nation that prides itself in punctuality and advanced infrastructure.

You really love trains to ride them this time in the morning to go to one city and then back to where you started :) Tell me have you ever missed a train when your out shooting video as I would be worried as you heard over the announcement Please Board the Train as she was saying this the train was already moving away :)

"Why is this train so crowded at this hour?" Well, to be fair, what else is there to do in Köln at 2:30 in the morning but go to Düsseldorf?

I bet Cologne cathedral will be great when it's finished in 2510 🤔sorry I couldn't resist. I always wonder how place names are translated in to English, I mean how did Koln become Cologne? Baring in mind there is a city in England called Colne which is pronounced exactly the same way as Koln!

To my knowledge, it was called Colonia during the time of the Roman Empire, and evolved into Köln in modern German. Cologne is the French name, which like many other places was adopted by English as well
