Good explanations! I'm sure it will help lots of folks. I inadvertently did that repair in the process of cleaning a carburetor on a Husqvarna mower that had been flooded. When I replaced the carb it still didn't want to start and that's when I found the cable out of adjustment. It starts and runs beautifully now.

Yes who would have thought this video would get almost 5k views in a day. This just happens to be one of the Eliminator checks on riding mowers to before we get into other diagnosis checks. You would be surprised on the time we have saved by 1. Check oil level 2. Check for spark 3. Check battery voltage and load test when a battery is involved 4. Check compression 5. Perform leak down test 6. Check choke plate movement 7. Take sample of fuel from fuel pump or carb bowl for water and debris. Just these have saved us and our customers a lot of time and thus money savings for the customer. Basically we charge a half hour minimum anyways.

Therefore, Jake and i decided these are the steps to follow on basically everything so we know what we need to do and what we do not need to do. In the long run our customers are saving a lot of money .

funny thing. my neighbour has same engine on columbia . new maybe 4 years ago. last spring he said it wouldn't start. it was exactly the same isuue. took 3 years to develop? on the 91 octane. I read that shell vpower now contains ethanol. my cardlock supplier told me his 91 is shell. so I tested an older can sample and a new sample. both were still ethanol free.

So, I have a MTD yardmachine with the 13.5Hp tecumseh, ive replaced Carb/Spark. It turns over no start unless I engage choke and slowly idle down choke at the right time, also fires up with Starter fluid. Once running it stays running but if i turn it off again i need to start it back up using a mix of choke/slightly pulling down to Fast idle....Im at a lost of what else it could be. i know the carbs are junk but if it was carb issue i would think it wouldnt run after start up. throttle cable is fine and choke plate closes as its suppose to. the only thing i have not changed was the little fuel filter inbetween the fuel tank and carb.. any other suggetions ??

No, on this engine the low rpm has it's own spring, and high rpm is set by another spring, they have back stoppers that you set the tension. So this only affects the choke

How's she goin'? This video is very timely for me. My MTD with a Kohler 17 HP SV530 engine won't start. If I use carb cleaner to start it, it starts and runs just like in your video. But now it starts with carb cleaner but won't keep running. Do you think it might be a vacuum leak not allowing the carb to draw the fuel from the bowl? I am getting good fuel flow to the crab. I also sprayed around the carb with crab cleaner to see if I could detect a vacuum leak and it seemed to be OK. Any ideas? Thanks for posting this very helpful video. Take care!!!
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 2 жыл бұрын
Check the fuel solenoid, make sure it's clicking. Other than that, maybe a clogged main jet? Hard to say, but I would start with carb/fuel as it wouldn't start at all if it didn't have spark/compression

@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
@@waynestefinashen239 The carb seemed good and clean and I didn't find any jets plugged. I do believe it was a carb issue though but other than the carb being a cheap aftermarket one I have no real proof that it is the culprit. I have ordered yet another carb and we'll see if a 'better quality' one makes a difference. I was tempted to buy an OEM Walbro carb, but they were over $100 and I only paid $350 for the whole tractor!!! LOL Take care!!!

Learned more from Jake today. Thanks, guy! One thing - don’t some choke plates operate correctly when they’re not quite all the way closed? Is there some sort of mechanical stop that accomplishes that, or maybe it’s a hole drilled in the plate. What I’m getting at is there’s supposed to be a limited amount of air coming through even when the choke is fully closed so is it possible to over-adjust that cable? 👍🔧🧰
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 2 жыл бұрын
Yea so if you pause on the dual barrel Briggs carburetor I show, even when the plate is fully closed, you can see the sides allow some air around it. And yes, most have a small hole drilled in them. But ideally you want the choke plate fully closed to increase the suction of the fuel.
