A solo motorcycle trip through the Arkansas Delta may sound like a bland place to travel. In reality, Arkansas is the hidden gem of the Southern United States for great motorcycle rides and destinations. The Great River Road National Scenic Byway runs along the eastern edge of Arkansas for 391 miles, and I spent 2.5 days traversing the byway to check out things to see, eat, and do! The lower delta is filled with history and good food.
- Jones BBQ: In the delta, BBQ is like a religion. And the Jones family has been practicing what they preach for over 100 years. Jones BBQ is the oldest black-owned restaurant in the United States and was the first restaurant in Arkansas to receive a James Beard Award.
- Louisiana Purchase State Park: Buried in the largest remaining headwater swamp in the Mississippi River drainage, you’ll find the Louisiana Purchase state park. A boardwalk will take you through the swamp to a granite monument which marks the site where the American West began.
- Helena: The Delta holds a history as rich its soil. And the town of Helena is one of the most fertile towns in the Delta for both. From its roots in the civil war, to blues music, and agriculture, there’s a little bit of everything here for people to discover, including the only Distillery in Arkansas making vodka from sweet potatoes: Delta Dirt Distillery. It’s also home to the Tavern, a local bar that serves up great burgers and pays homage to the local blues radio show: King Biscuit Time
- Arkansas Post National Memorial: The Mississippi River was a major waterway used during the Civil War, but it wasn’t the only waterway that was important to both the Confederacy in the Union. The Arkansas Post is the site of a battle that gave the Union control of the Arkansas River.
- Rohwer Memorial: After the attacks on Pearl Harbor, a wave of hysteria swept the country, and nearly 120,000 Japanese-American citizens came under suspicion as to their loyalty to the United States. President Roosevelt established the War Relocation Authority and began the forced relocation of persons of Japanese ancestry. Between 1942 and 1945, more than 8,000 Japanese Americans were interned at Rohwer-a 500-acre camp surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards. Today, it’s surrounded by farmlands, and all that remains is a memorial cemetery and the smokestack from the hospital.
- Hoots BBQ: Hoots BBQ is THE PLACE to eat in McGehee! Their menu takes up an entire wall of the restaurant and also has a bakery and bar inside.
- Lake Chicot and Lake Village: At the southern end of the Great River Road in Arkansas, you’ll find Lake Village. Lake Chicot State Park is a great place to rent a Kayak and explore the lake’s cypress trees, before heading to Rhoda’s Famous Hot Tamales in town. No motorcycle trip along the Great River Road is complete without a stop at Rhoda’s.
