In this episode we attempt the 62 mile black canyon trail... on singlespeeds... in one day. The first time I rode this trail I kept thinking to myself "I wonder if this trail is doable on a singlespeed in a day..." Today we find out. This is the longest challenge I've done yet: 62 miles, 5500 ft of climbing, and over 11 hours of pedaling... in one gear. For this trail I took the Spot Rocker belt-drive in singlespeed mode. Joining me is my riding buddy Cody, and my best friend and wife, Dusty Betty.

Thank you, I feel extremely fortunate. Riding with someone you love is simply the best. She didn't mountain bike when we got married, but she loves it now. So there's hope out there for everyone else. Now our first world problems are agreeing on who gets to ride each day, since we both want to ride every day. With a toddler it's tough to find a babysitter, so we don't get to ride together as much as we'd like, so it's really special when we do get to ride together.

@@hardtailparty People have mapped routes that go top to bottom and side to side in NH and VT, but they use a lot of rail trails and gravel roads rather than single track. In NH we have class VI roads, in VT they are class IV roads, they are unmaintained town roads that are still rights of way but many are actually too rough to ride because they were cut straight along the fall line and they just become rivers when it rains. This summer I might try to make a couple of them near my home passable so I can string together a reasonable XC loop. We do have some nice trail networks that are maintained by the local clubs/chapters. Often they are on private land and not posted on sites like Trailforks, but they provide some great riding.

I noticed you drinking the skunky river water. To improve it before filtering, see if you can dig a 'coyote well'. Basically, it's about a 5-6" diameter hole about the length of your forearm, about 3 feet from the edge of the stream. It takes 20 minutes, but it uses the sand and soil to filter the water that seeps into it. It makes a big difference.

Man, such an awesome video! makes me want to do a similar type of ride out here in California! Quick question on your tires - Heard you mentioned that you were running 2.3 tires... aren't those a bit narrow for a hardtail? I thought for hardtails, you want to be riding something a bit wider so you can run them at a lower psi and soften the ride a little bit. I'm running 2.8's on my hardtail, at 150lbs, I run them at 14 and 16 psi (front and back, with inserts), and find that they have great traction in dirt, but feel a bit bouncy going over rock gardens like the ones you ride on in Sedona. How do i get rid of that bouncy-ness, do I need to run my tires at even lower psi?
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 3 жыл бұрын
Bounciness means your tire casing is too thin or your psi is off. I love my 2.3s out here. They really dig in.
