Rich & I take advantage of one of the rare "Twilight Cycling" nights at the WeatherTech Raceway in Salinas, California, to see what it's like to take a recumbent racing trike out on a historic auto race track.

What a blast! Great history too with your dad racing there. Brought back a memory of me as a teenager in the '60s taking my Yamaha 100cc twin onto a circuit outside of Vancouver B.C. Around the gates and let'r rip......Woohoo.......youth.......

Nice! I had no idea so many tracks around the country had bike-specific days! Yep, for some reason I always imagined auto racing tracks to be completely flat. Just goes to show how wrong I can be. :)

Last time I was on a track like that was in my Subaru WRX. After running through a full tank of fuel, and scaring my self silly when I felt the car lift off the track around a long fast curve, I decided I'd had enough. Would be fun on the trike though for sure!

Looks like some fun downhills- was hoping you'd give it some beans at least once though to see how fast you could go. That roadie's " on your right" at the top of a hill was just too much of a challenge- dunno how you could take that sitting down!

Lol! Yeah, we were so busy trying to shoot the video that we really couldn't just let loose and enjoy ourselves. We really have to get back down there and do this again when we can just "ride". If you notice when the road bike rider drops down in front of Rich, he starts out moving faster than we are, keeps pedaling, goes into a full tuck, and Rich, while he's not even pedaling, stays right with him. The aerodynamics on the trikes are so much better on the downhills, with the slightest bit of pedal power, we could've blown past him at any time. :)

@@bikestrikesrazors Yes. I went. Weather was warm and sunny. The uphill to the Corkscrew was a bit strenuous. The Corkscrew was great! I did four laps. I was the only trike there. I had a great time. Thanks to you guys for the reminder about Twilight Cycling. I think I'm going to try to do it often. I got a couple of comments about my going really fast through the corkscrew. I found it was quite comfortable going fast when I didn't have to worry about deer and pedestrians jumping out in front of the trike. It would be fun to meet you guys if you came down to the July event. Hope to see you there. By the way, I retired from Pebble Beach and can't get free golf any more. Sorry about that.😃

@@michaelmcdaniel5053 Great to hear you had a good time out there, Michael! Yep, I was shocked by how steep that climb was up to the top of The Corkscrew. It was worth it though for the ride down! I just checked and all the remaining Twilight Cycling nights this year are during the week, when we can't take the long trip down from Shingle Springs, so it looks like we'll have to wait and see what next year's Twilight Cycling schedule looks like. No more Pebble Beach?! I guess now you'll have to settle for the Pacific Grove course, which, while it's no Pebble Beach, is pretty dang nice. :)

I'm retired now so unless my lovely bride has me doing something, I'm usually free as a bird. By the way, I think the ride from Marina to Pebble Beach has the Tahoe trail beat for "beauty". What a fabulous ride and video. I’m so jealous! Im going to check the race track,in New Hampshire to see if they have a similar program. I had no idea there were grades like that on those tracks. Hey, Mark! I just checked my Strava and maximum speed was just under 41mph. I can’t imagine our average speed was too high as there were lots of hills and we were spending more time shooting video than actually riding. That’s something that’ll be remedied the next time we do this. Best of luck finding a race track that’ll allow this in your area. Someone had already commented that there was a track in New Jersey that had regular bicycle nights and they didn’t even charge the cyclists. Makes me feel ill used for having to pay $10! :)

@@bikestrikesrazors…thanks for the info. I had no idea that tracks had such elevation changes. I knew they were banked but was totally unaware of the hills. Getting up to 41 mph is pretty scary! I know the race track in the Poconos in Pennsylvania lets folks on but I now live in New England. The racetrack in NH might have a similar program. I’d love to give it a go! I just got home from Florida yesterday . Four months down there with crummy weather until the last three weeks. Very windy and cool. It’s 37/windy/raining here. That’s some welcome home! Thanks for the great video. I’d love to,buy one of those retro cycling jerseys you mentioned last year…any luck there?

@@markfeldman6509 Yikes, 37! I'm complaining about riding in the high 40's. It's almost nothing but rain here this winter with the last 4 of 5 Saturdays (one of my ride days) rained out. When a video gets a little old, KZfaq puts it on the "back burner" so not too many folks are seeing the jersey video anymore. The local vintage club here is talking about trying to make a similar jersey with the club's letters. Not sure if anything will come of it, but I'll let you know.

@@bikestrikesrazors thanks for your efforts. I feel your pain with the bad weather. Had a lousy rainy windy season in Florida. I was out riding in the weather but Floridians were not very happy with the chilly temps and winds. For a New England guy it was shorts weather. Out tomorrow,in fleece with my buddies. Will hold off on the golf until its at least 55-60. Thanks for your great videos. If you ever come east give me a shout and rode the great tips with me on Cape Cod. This was a great example of the difference between bikes and trikes. Going up the hills, we were slower than the bikes, but downhill we were faster. When you see the bike rider drop in on us in the corkscrew, he was in full tuck pushing his big gear the entire time, while I wasn't pedaling, and we went down the hill at the same speed. :) Because we were shooting a video, we were just trying to get shots and not really trying to "open it up" on the track. I'll have to go back sometime just to see what it's like to try and speed around the track.

Hey, Tony- We were just busy with shooting the video and never really even had the chance to try to go fast. Going down that long hill, the "corkscrew", I hit 41mph, but even that was limited by the fact that one of us was holding the camera which was causing drag, and the other had to stay slow so he didn't get too far away from the guy with the camera. We're definitely going back on another of the twilight cycling nights, not worrying about shooting a video, and just having fun rolling around as fast as we can. Thanks for watching!
