Our last train ride we too had a snorer - VERY LOUD - right behind us and a gentleman that apparently when they say 10:00 is quiet time, didn't understand. Talking on his phone in a loud voice. Finally said Sssshhh and he quieted down. Rest of our trip was in a Roomette. Sorry about your snorer.

As a Brisbanite I can say that while we can't compete with Asia or Europe in quality and speed of rail travel in Australia as a whole, the Spirit of Queensland is something we're proud of... until I saw that segment where everything started shaking violently. I'll just settle for not being able to compete with Asia and Europe 😂

So far there are two things I don't like. The open space in front of your legs and the place to put your phone. Both are open to the aisle and doesn't give much privacy. The seat opening up for the bed was cool.

Again thank-you Kuga for sharing your journeys, I remember traveling on a sleeper Brisbane to Cairns years ago with my wife, l have to say ;l prefer the cabins rather than sleeper chairs, especially with a noisy neighbor hehehe..Also a bit shaky at times remember to allways book your seat or sleeper...either in the middle or just off the center of the carriage...never over the wheels or near the door entry over the wheel sets is always noisy and shakes a lot....advice from an old Train Driver....regards Doc from Down Under in Australia

The shower in the toilet is a terrible idea! Whoever approved the design must never travel by train. I'd rather have no shower, than use one in a public toilet space on a train. It's strange that they also decided to have a separate shower room, but lucky for you. The rest of the train looks surprisingly good, by Australian standards. Possibly even better with earplugs for sleeping. Next time you're in Australia, I challenge you to try the Central West XPT, from Sydney to Dubbo, and report your honest impressions as a Japanese person ;-) You can visit the zoo in Dubbo, and the old gaol, and ... not a lot else, really. The zoo really is world class though, almost like a safari park.

I took this train in the opposite direction in 2020 when I snuck off for a holiday between lockdowns! Flew up from Brisbane and trained it back, though in the regular seats as the railbed sold out. I really enjoyed the trip but the seat was very uncomfortable to try to sleep in overnight.Shame you missed Kuranda, it's a really beautiful journey up to the village, definitely a bucket list item! I'll be travelling out to Longreach in about 2 months time- again flying out, and getting a cabin on the Spirit of the Outback back to Brisbane. Really excited about this one!

This looks like the best long distance train in Australia. (I'm not counting the Indian Pacific or The Ghan, which only exist as "train cruises". For $390 it's competitive in price with the plane from Brisbane, and if you weren't in a rush the 25 hour journey would be fine. And rhe seat/bed is definitely comparable to airline business class. Bigger partitions would be nice and they should definitely include earplugs and sleep masks in the amenity kit. But to see a Japanese person envious of Australian rail facilities is very rare!
@user-hf6ok2tj5h
@user-hf6ok2tj5h 19 күн бұрын
I agree, apart from "flying" at ground level, this seat pod configuration reminded me of a typical overnight airline flight in Business Class. Depending on the airline, the meal service was pretty similar too. I'm therefore surprised that some folks thought there should be more privacy? Unless you're used to paying for a 1st Class Emirates Airline ticket, you'll never get to take an in-flight shower and wander down to a 24hr cocktail lounge. Seemed like a pretty nice setup to me.
@djackmanson
@djackmanson 19 күн бұрын
@@user-hf6ok2tj5h The other recent innovation in train sleeping arrangements seems to be the "capsule" sleeping arrangements in some brand bew European trains, which offer complete privacy but are very cramped. I think I'd prefer this pod.

The Sleep Pod should be introduced for all long distance passenger rail services in Australia. The India Pacific (Sydney to Perth) and the Ghan (Adelaide to Darwin) services could be left as private luxury services. But the Australia Federal government should have this sleep pod rail services for average travellers that arent interested in luxury services. Indeed, even Amtrak should consider this type of service. Perhaps the engineer will come up with a design that is easier without electrical mechanism to turn the seat to a bed. So passengers could do this themselves. With noisy neighbours, it's no difference for economy services. It's luck of the draw. Great video. Thanks
@perhapsme988
@perhapsme988 19 күн бұрын
I should add. Summer in Australia is from November to March. In northern Queensland, these summer months are low tourist season as it's the monsoon period there. The rest of Australia is warm too. So no need to go up to tropical regions. This is why this service in February is not packed. (School kids also start new school year in February in Australia). Very humid but not too hot. In Sydeny in our summer, it's both humid and usually hotter too. In the dry season, this rail service would be packed. Same with hotel accommodations and tourist attractions for northern Queensland. Same applies to airfare. I will be doing this rail trip in Australia summer. No difference in humid and hot and often wet Sydeny or in North Queensland.
@djackmanson
@djackmanson 19 күн бұрын
Unfortunately the rail services are the responsibility of State governments, so introducing this on the Melbourne to Sydney and Brisbane to Sydney routes would mean different states needing to co-operate. But in principle, I agree 100%. This sort of service should be available in first class on long-distance Australian trains. It seems far more efficient and comfortable than separate cabins.

Great video. Never been in between Brisbane and Cairns. Looks lush. Distance reminds me of maybe Morioka to Fukuoka in Japan (albeit that trip is significantly faster… with it being almost painless through Tohoku). I wish Australia would invest in high speed train. Sydney to Melbourne is 5th busiest flight in world (pre Covid it was 2nd). Sydney to Brisbane is just outside the top 10. Both flights are significantly busier than any US flight and it’s the Shinkansen in Japan that reduces Japans reliance on planes for the < 3 hour by train trips. Sydney-Melbourne is almost comparable to Haneda-Fukuoka in both distance and number of people that fly.

I've traveled on this train a few times but never the capsule sleeper...too expensive for a pensioner however the seating in the cheaper carriages are similar to business class...comfortable...reclines...have individual TV in the backrests USB ports etc...fold down table...fold out footrest. Access to showers and toilets...meals are not provided as part of the ticket but can be preordered and/or eaten in the club car...where other food items, snacks and drinks including alcohol can be purchased. The only complaint I have about the seating is that they are uncomfortable when trying to get sleep...but who complains when the pensioner concession allows a trip from Brisbane to Cairns for $45. I'd recommend the trip as it offers unparalleled viewing experiences...travel the entire east coast... subtropical to tropical...safe...easy going...economical.
