Riding Through a Midlife 'Crisis' on my Bonneville T120

Spending time on my trusty Triumph Bonneville T120 motorcycle, I've come to realize a few things about the so-called 'midlife crisis.' Like a lot of things, a midlife crisis exists only if you let it. Instead, turn it into a midlife awakening and forget about what other people think!
Filmed on my 2017 Triumph Bonneville T120 Black.
My other ride is a 2023 Vespa GTS 300 Super Sport.

I just turned 63, so well beyond mid-life. Used to ride, but set it aside because people kept telling me it was dangerous and 'impractical'. Bought my new T120 last Thursday to be delivered this week (my birthday present to myself). I've earned every year, every wrinkle, and every gray hair. I've earned every right to do whatever I want and long past caring what others might say or think. That's true freedom.

I just turned 60yrs young yesterday. When i was in my 20's my T140 Bonneville was stolen. Never to be seen again. I had other bikes after that custom Honda 750/4s , Cossack Ural and a Harley FL shovelhead. Then i got into fishing in a big way sold the Harley and bought a 20ft fibreglass boat with a big diesel inboard and went snapper fishing for a few years. Sold that bought a smaller aluminium boat and chased freshwater fish like bass and cod in eastern Australia. Every now and then usually at traffic lights i would hear the note of a nice custom British or American bike and found myself subconciously evaluating the bikes build and picturing myself on it. That feeling of freedom on a motorcycle never ever quite went away. I hope to be riding another bike again soon like a old Norton 750 or maybe even a new Indian chief. It doesnt really matter as long as i can rip that darn helmet off my head and get my hair flowing in the wind again before I die of old age or something. Regards B.J.

To me, you are a 'tween'. I'm a 69 year old teenager. Ridden since I was 7. Raced since I was 14. Taught road racing to others at your current age. Long ago I gave up caring what people thought. I enjoy your channel. I ride because I want to. I buy what I want to. I worked my entire life raising kids. Now I get to be a teen with a decent allowance. I ride to eat, take photos, and review bike stuff for a website. I'm too stupid to know how to do video, so I don't. Life itself can be a crisis. Riding cures that for me.

There’s no such thing as a mid life crisis. It’s just a realisation that there is a finish line and a recognition of your direction of travel. People have taken bigger risks than riding a motorcycle and survived. Have fun, you’ve earned the right. If you’ve reached your mid 50’s and beyond, you’ve already won the life lottery, now is the time to enjoy the gravy. And use your knife to get that gravy off your plate once in a while, it makes it taste better….

To quote a Supertramp album title, "Crisis? What Crisis?" I'm on the downside of "midlife," and here in my 70th year, I just bought myself a brand-new scoot. People give me grief, sure, but I just look at them and say, "And your point is?" They usually don't have one. Mostly, they're just jealous.

I full agree with your pushing back on "Midlife Crisis." It can be seen as a choice to live in the present, enjoying the gift of life while we are here or worry about the past or future. Motorcycling is on way, and my preferred way to live in the moment - a great teacher when you laps out of the now - instant feedback! I took up riding again at 56 and several years later I am really appreciating riding - more than ever. Cheers to us!! Thanks for your thoughts.

I agree, midlife is where you can afford a decent bike, and you should enjoy yourself. I'm 60, I've reached the peak of what I can earn in terms of a salary, working as a Civil Engineer for 35 years. I was lucky in my 30's to make some good money and I brought a 1988 Lowrider, which I still have with a sidecar fitted, and last year in March 2023 I brought a 2022 Pan Am Special, the green Enthusiasts Collection version, it is an amazing all roads sports tourer, now I didn't buy it go off road or launch myself over rugged tacks and hills, I did enough of that in the 1990's doing motocross and enduro, I got it to ride the open road and really enjoy commuting in Melbourne Australia.

To me, "midlife crisis" is that state of mind when you're looking at as much years left in your life as years you've lived, and you think about everything you *wanted* to accomplish but haven't... and panicking about it, and doing something to distract yourself from it. Takes different forms for different folks and different folks experience it to varying degrees, some a lot, some not at all. I'm late to motorcycling and like to jokingly label it my midlife crisis... that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it any less!

I joke that I'm having a mid-youth crisis. I got into motorcycles 2 years ago at 27, and part of the reason I finally jumped into it was because I began to realise that I won't be a young man forever, and it was something I'd always dreamed of doing "at some point". I'm having the time of my life blasting around on my Street Triple and going camping on my T120.
@BugMotoChannel
@BugMotoChannel 4 ай бұрын
That's fantastic. I hope you keep that perspective. There are folks who say "I'd give my left arm to be 29 again" and while there's some truth to that - we'd all love a chance to go back and do it over again knowing what we know now - just know that getting older isn't so bad. Enjoy being young and don't worry too much about aging. Just make good decisions now that will ensure you're comfortable, happy and healthy when you get older. Regret SUCKS!

Having a so-called "crisis" can be very healthy. Taking stock of who you are vs who you want to be, and then putting those thoughts into action to get what you want is healthy. Too often do we wait for a tragedy or a life altering event to get our minds moving and saying I need to make some changes. The happiest people I've known are those who constantly commit themselves to stretching themselves and doing new things.

I answered as you did, "It's a midlife wake-up", on another post and the females came running pitchforks in hand! But, it is. We have worked and sacrificed for everyone else all of our adult lives so that not one desire was left unfulfilled. We took the scraps if there were any. It's our turn. My wife tried to put her foot down and say she'd have no part of it. I said, ok. I now have 4 motorcycles and she has no part of it. One amazing machine in my stable is a Can-Am RT Ltd, a reverse trike, that I use on snow days, among other special days. That thing can handle weather like mad. Once they clear the ice off the road, I'm out. She asked me why I ride almost every day and I said, "It's the only thing in my life that I know will bring me joy each and every time. That was the end of the subject and her resistance to it.

I had a long break from riding from about 1992 until 2015, while my daughter was growing up and life was going at a faster pace. When I bought a Honda Shadow in 2015 it was part of my plan to ride into retirement which I did in 2017. Fast forward some after a Harley, an ADV (2), and a Goldwing (still in the garage) I’m finding my T120 to be the most fun presently, it is a great all around bike, and it fulfills my British bike dreams from high school when I wanted a Norton Commando 850 really bad. There really is not mid-life crisis in my opinion, there is a point when you decide to enjoy life, and head in that direction.

I feel like it's the same thing as "guilty pleasure". People have internalized this judgmental outlook on life because of their insecurities. It's a vicious cycle whereby judged people judge people, and the only way to break out is to get over those insecurities and just doing whatever brings you joy. If others willingly limit themselves, it's their business, and if they continue to judge, the problem is on them, not us.

Yes definitely I see it as a midlife "awakening" thank you for describing it as such, it empowers those of us who seek new challenges later in life but I don't understand your analogy of motorcycling as a sport, if sport suggests competition that's why I jump on a bike to avoid that notion. Yes I embrace the risks, but my motorcycle is my "safe room" Forever enjoy your rides 👍

I just use 'sport' the same way I'd use 'hobby.' Force of habit I guess from hearing others refer to the 'sport' of motorcycling. It's definitely not a sport, in the traditional sense, for me at all.

Great video my friend. I too am 51. Ride a motorcycle, do youtube, and have the same term labelled at me by certain people. I sacrificed my youth to work hard, plus I couldnt afford insurance on a motorcycle or was able to pass the big test due costs. Now those things are cheaper now. Kids have moved on and have lives of their own. I estimate I could have 10? 15? 20? years riding in me left? Just do it.

I got 10 years on you my man. And as I've said before never thought of riding a bike until I was 57...in fact one of my colleagues even said he wouldn't be surprised to see me on a Harley-Davidson in a couple of years ..lo and behold it happened and what a fantastic retirement it's been. Yes, I've heard the 'crisis' accusations and I just say if this is a crisis, well bring on more crises ...cos I'm loving it. That invite to Ireland still there. Loved this vlog .

I've spent a good portion of my life making jabs at Harleys, and still do, just because I have a weird sense of humor. But... Damnit if I'm not becoming obsessed with owning one now. Problem is, Harley junked all their affordable bikes - which are the ones I'm most attracted to for whatever reason - and much like my beloved Vespa, are becoming more and more of a 'premium brand' rather than a brand for the working folk. So it's a used Harley sportster or something for me down the line. I was riding the other night and met up with a pack of Harley riders. One of them had this chopped out old, ratty Harley that looked like it was birthed in a parts bin. I instantly fell in love and haven't stopped thinking about it since. I think that's my future. Buy an old, broken one and bring it back to life as something to ride when I really just don't care about anything else except the feeling one must feel when riding such a bike...

@@BugMotoChannel it's a phase thing for me ..loved it in the States and treated myself ..but the Honda Shadow was more than enough for me...I'll be going back to a metro cruiser for sure. Still have a bobbed virago but don't get out on it. For now I do enjoy the power of the 114 engine...but it will get too heavy ..I'm just blessed to have discovered the joys of biking .

I'm 38, and for the past 2 months I've been going back and forth on getting a sport bike. I wasn't sure if I should because I thought maybe I'm to old for a sport bike and was worried about what others would think. I needed this video. I deserve to do something that would bring me joy, and I hope everyone can find their "mid-life crisis". Thanks man. Subscribed.

So, the ones in my videos are Triumph-branded mirrors, perhaps off an older Street Triple? Not sure. Anyway, just yesterday I swapped them out for the Classic Round mirrors (part # A9630716) and I like them a whole lot. Not quite as sporty looking, but a ton more functional.

There's this ridiculous ageism in the US, they act like if you're old enough to have a colonoscopy you should just sit there and wait for death while doing nothing but watching TV. This idea is ridiculous I'm 47 and I'm going to learn to ride and take the class in June. I've busted my butt for years and can finally afford it so to hell with the haters.
