Two suggestions: 1. Install a sediment filter before the tank to avoid sediment build up in the tank. Having two sediment filters (one before & one after the tank.) 2. Glue a bushing with female threads into the LB box so you can install a romax connector for the #12 gauge romax wire going into the LB.

I got all of my filtrations done before the tank,and in the tank i have a UV lamp ,but yes the sediment filter is the minimum
@OvhanDevos
@OvhanDevos Жыл бұрын
I was just about to suggest something similar. On one hand, if you can clean out the tank, letting the sediment settle out means less usage on the sediment filter. But on the other hand, it just makes more sense to me to run all the filters BEFORE the tank. Run less chance of damaging anything after that. But I guess it might also depend on how things work, like the filters might not be able to handle the higher pressures on the line between the well and the tank.

Should never put a sediment filter before the pressure tank, will effect how the pressure switch acts. Sediment on the bottom of the tank isn't an issue. Only time I will come out is if you drain the tank down or run out of water.
@guytech7310
@guytech7310 Жыл бұрын
Nope. issue is that some time filter get clogged, and it can burn up the pump motor. One option is to install two tanks: a small one with the pressure switch on it, and a second tank on the other side of the filter(s). The LB isn't the right electical box. It should be a box which you can install romex connector clamps (usually with threaded holes). You cab by cast alum or plastic rectangular electrical boxes that will except threaded flex conduit connections & romex wire connector clamps.

You can use large to small micron filters the same way. The problem with the carbon filter is they lose carbon in the water so it will clog your other filters also. However if you don't want random black particles in your water you can do the carbon before another 20 micron filter to stop the carbon. If you buy a white filter you will see the black carbon on it. I had to do a lot of filtration for high pressure aeroponics It's good to think of the carbon as a sponge. Over time it will take the same oh and chemicals as whatever it filters. The carbon becomes very concentrated with these elements

It is called an LB because the opening is opposite the cover, coming out the back. There are also LRs and LLs for going right and left. Hold the fitting like a pistol and the cover to the right is an LR and to the left an LL. I agree about putting a romex connector going into the LB. You wouldn't pass an inspection since the opening is not closed.

After a couple of years building RO systems in arctic communities I would suggest an RO membrane . You should also look at a UV light phase on the post filtration side , you might also want to consider a 300-500 gallon tank in the basement post filtration to store clean water an ozone aeration unit will help keep it fresh and having a stock of clean water in a heatable space may save you in an extreme winter season . It also seems better for pump longevity to pressurize your inlet water with one pump and distribute it with another located after the filtration and before the P Tank . This splits the draw load and the distribution pressurization load . We were building fill your own jug systems for the town stores in these tiny villages and when you are 2 or 3 airplane flights and at least as many days from any replacement parts or a service tech you learn pretty quick how to adapt these systems for absolute minimum hands on maintenance , after all who wants to pay 10-12 thousand dollars for someone to fly in and replace a 100 dollar pump ?

You guys are awesome, I had been racking my brain in my water adventures on my property. I have been following your videos from the beginning, I also have the battle born batteries, and the victron inverters, thanks to your videos. After seeing this, I ripped everything out and installed the 86 gallons tank from home depot. Best purchase ever!!! Also, I installed a Girard tankless rv water heater in our trailer, so we can take endless showers. I need to upgrade my filtration, as our water tastes metallic and is yellowish. Is there a part number or website where you got your filter unit? Thank you!!!

having put in hundreds of wells in the past as well as servicing hundreds more add something like a iSpring WSP100ARB Spin Down Sediment Water Filter before the pressure tank! you can see the sediment so you know when to open the trap to empty heavy particulates as well as when to remove the filter to clean it.

When I lived in Hawaii I had a similar system but suggest a couple changes for yours. My system had a sediment filter before the pressure tank and that helps keep the inside of that tank clean and the rubber bladder inside it will last longer. Also, I had 3 filters mounted in this order : first was sediment, second was charcoal/carbon, last was a UV filter which contained a UV light that kills 99.9% of bacteria. We didn't really need an iron filter but since you have a deep well I can understand the need for one in your situation. I had my water tested for bacteria to be sure it was a safe source of drinking water. It's a learning experience that is so important! God bless you all! I love watching your progress!
@Eggugat
@Eggugat Жыл бұрын
The sediment will have no effect on the life of the tank, nor will dirty water. It more comes down to how often and how much water you use. The more the bladder expands and contracts, it gets pinched where a metal ring is crimped into the tank to hold it into place. I have never seen a filter before a tank besides and automatic sand separator. Putting filters before a tank can cause a pump to short cycle from the pressure switch not properly sensing tank pressure. Minerals in the water all come down to where the well is drilled not how deep. I have replaced pumps in 100 ft wells there are iron mines and I have also replaced pumps in 1300 ft well that are spotless. Just luck of the draw and local terrain really. Hopefully that helps some :)

Would recommend adding a water softener before the filter, (I have a kinetico) I did what you did prior and spent two years of spending a ton on filters, the up front of a water softener is more but if you plan on the long haul it’s a saver and plus you can actually get 8 months on the filters. Side note, would add a uv filter system too, bulb change yearly and it’s cheap. Love the videos and good luck with off grip living

A suggestion, I wouldn’t put the filters and pressure tank in the crawl space, not for any other reason than it’s a pain to change and if the tank ever fails, it’s a huge pain to get it out of there. Usually you would want all of that stuff at ground level or at least where you can get it out of there on a flight of stairs instead of a step ladder. In the case of a catastrophic failure, it’s nice when these systems are located in the garage, in those cases they typically drain out of the garage bay.

Hey never seen your channel before, but I am a well technician hopefully I can give some tips or advice. 1:20 I use teflon tape and pipe dope when I do anything. It cheaper to buy teflon than to have a call back for a leak. 3:20 you don't need to open the bypass to change the filters unless you have something very important using water. I also didn't notice any pressure release buttons on the filters they may be black and just hard to see. But if you don't have any way of releasing the pressure out of the filter you will never get it lose. 8:45 tanks are sized based on your pump size. I am sure this one is sufficient but the reasoning is for proper run time of the pump, you don't want it run for short periods of time bad for long term health of the motor. 9:50 if you can run a ground to the tank. The brass to stainless connection will cause electrolysis but can be lessened with grounding. 22:35 Carbon should be last in line as the iron will foul it out and clog the filter. hope it helps

The recommendation of using a sediment filter before the tank is a good one. It looks like you went with 4.5-inch diameter filters also called big blue filters by 20 inches long. This is a good choice. I have had an excellent experience with these sediment filters in a 50--5--1 micron bank. But I have really rusty water with chunks. I did not see the designated sediment filter that was used. If you use pleated filters you will get massively more use as compared to smooth surface filters. A pressure gauge after the sediment filter will tell you when to change the filter.
@craigs5212

Nice job, bet your are glad to have fully plumbed water now. One suggestion move the iron filter before the tank and a second sediment filter between the iron filter and the well. This will keep the sediment and iron out of the tank. You are likely going to need a larger iron filter. They are available in a larger tank like a water softener, with these there, is no filter to purchase and replace they do need to be back flushed and recharged every so often, good ones have fully automatic back flush and salt brine regeneration. The activated carbon filters are usually coconut charcoal in a block or granular (GAC) form. When replacing these filters you need to flush them to the drain for a couple minutes to wash out all the charcoal dust. Just run the water until it runs clear. Factoid: 1 gram of activated carbon has the surface area of an acre of land.

This system is probably installed on a lot of homes that have a well. I never had one before and wasnt aware that a bad pressure tank causes that pressure to constantly fluctuate, the needle drops and builds up often instead of a working tank which keeps the needle steady. This also causes the pump to work too much, probably wearing it out.

You had it right as far as you went. LB stands for "Elbow Back" because the direction change is on the "back". There are also LL and LR and an almost never used LF. You guessed it, Elbow Left, Elbow Right and the unicorn Elbow Front. I've only seen the LF once in 37 years as a general contractor.

We just installed a 3 stage filter system for our house. Works great 👍 The carbon filter should be the last in line.

Do you have any way to bleed the pressure off of the filters after closing the valve? I suggest adding a bleeder. If not, it'll be difficult to unscrew the filters. Pressure guage on each side will show you your differential pressure also.

We had a well with a lot of iron, water from the well was red, real red. Installed a Kinetico water softener and a ozone iron filter, worked great.

I always install a zero pressure cutoff pressure switch on my well systems. They have saved me from having the pump run dry and burn up many times.

Down here in Mississippi we avoid those brass fittings, because they will eventually corrode from minerals in the water. Hope you don’t have that problem with your water.

I went back and watch the video the Hydrant is teed in by the well on the same line that goes to the house the check valve in the house is not going to let the water go back to the Hydrant so you only have water at the hydrant when the pump is running .

If you install another set of filters in parallel with the others filters you will get much longer life out of the filters because as they plug up they only need to supply half the flow. I’ve seen others with particularly dirty water run quad lines of filters. Set and forget type of system and when they do actually plug up in an emergency you can still just replace one set of filters till you can replace all of them.

Your filter system is very much the same as ours, just a different manufacturer. We have had it for over 4 years and recently changed to a block carbon filter from a granulated one and it made huge difference. We also use a 25 10 5 1 micron filter first then the iron manganese and carbon last. Your water might have a little more sediment so you may need to pre-filter before the pressure tank. Great job and very well explained.

Removing the sharp nineties is completely negated by the myriad fittings you put in the longer runs, each of which causes friction.

27:05 I have a fairly similar arrangement with the hydrant and hand pump, and it's REALLY hard to pressurize the tank to 60PSI by hand. Plus, you can't see the pressure, so the only way to know when to stop it is to keep pumping until your arm falls off! 😁 Still, it's much better than having no water. This arrangement saved me lots of times when I was having problems with my well pump.
