Am i wrong for finding it unacceptable that frames come out of factories in these conditions? How is a home builder supposed to fix the issues without those specific and very expensive tools? Not to mention that Mapdec is truly one of a kind, i would assume most bike shops wouldn't go even 1/10th as far.

You’ve hit the nail on the head, some people who are capable of building a bike up but without the skill to delve this far into fixing issues would be forced to pay to have it fixed and also probably end up questioning their own capabilities.

As someone who works in a bike shop that is/was a Ridley dealer. They're not great, the headset is either to tight or it rattles loose after every ride. Full builds are not well assembled, they often need bleeding and indexing of the derailleurs. I've yet to come across the first ridley where when you tighten one bolt on the caliper it doesn't 'move' when you tighten it. Paint overspray and orange peel are quite regular. The design with the d shape steerer tube makes it that the cables make a lot of turns and this will damage the housings over time. And this is even without mentioning that their leadtimes are way longer than other brands like Wilier and Basso.

Frame is the basement. You need to dicide on materials/geometry/standards and don't care for components (it's upgradable). If in doubt or on a budget - alu with higher specs is better. I'm actually riding Giant Revolt 0 aluminum (2020). Upgraded it over time, looking for new wheels but love the frame - it's damn durable and well made.

Great video, thanks. I recently bought a Ridley Kanzo alloy (frame looks exactly like the one in your vid). It was purchased directly from the Ridley distributor here in Australia heavily discounted at a little more than half price. It came with GRX810 gearing (but a Forza Crankset) and cost just under $2k AUD. I’m really impressed with it. It arrived with brakes and gears assembled (brakes were bled nicely). Not much assembly required other than the bars and stem and gears needed some indexing. I’ve only had a chance to get out on one gravel ride but it rode very nicely. The only disappointing thing is that the wheels aren’t tubeless ready. Other than that I’m very happy with it at the price. I don’t think I would have paid RRP for it

Aluminium always was a great material for frame building. Most of the time it is used as a second tier material as it's not as 'sexy' as carbon, but when optimised it really excels. One of its huge advantages is that it can be prototyped. Manufacturers can't really do that with carbon as the moulding tools are so expensive. Build the mould, build the bike, even if it's not quite right. Aluminium can also be machined so easily for optimising bearing fitment etc. As long as the manufacturer takes the trouble to do it.

Having worked in a Ridley dealer here in the US a few years ago (at the dawn of disc brakes for road and cyclocross). Headsets never fitted properly - our fix was to wrap headset bearings in plumbers tape so the frame held them tightly - but as the shop mechanic I was never happy with this. My boss was happy with the sales at the beginning - but the amount of returning problems were not worth the headache in my opinion. The shop closed down shortly after…

The Basso Palta is a beautiful gravel bike also worth looking at. On the alu vs carbon debate, I’ve owned and compared a couple (actually about a 10 now) specialized diverge gen 2 bikes, and consistently am faster on the alu version, and even included C38 carbon wheels on the carbon bike I compared it too, eventually sold it. Last thought is that if you travel, alu bikes and wheels just seem stronger or less likely to be hurt in a bike bag, can’t begin to tell stories of buckled wheels and dings on carbon bikes.

That had to be the new Ultegra due to the frame not being compatible with the old style front mech) and just put on a set on Scribe 38 Aero wheels. Sub 8kg too coming in at 7.8kg. I actual prefer riding it to my Canyon Aeroad! The frame responds so well and it climbs like a goat! Super comfy too actually considering it's alloy. My only con with it is that the paint is quite thin so you have to really careful looking after it, but it does look wicked.

Great vid! I've been keeping up with the Cannondale nightmare as well. What's the story with carbon fiber and grease? I was under the impression not to add grease to bearings/ bb on a carbon frame or carbon fork? I was sure you even spoke about that on the last Cannondale update, saying not to add grease. Yet, this Ridley seems to have quite a bit of grease around the steerer tube of the fork, and even some on the headset bearings on top. I was told grease can act like a cutting compound to carbon fiber, slowly wearing the outer surface down. I understand each manufacturer has its own directions, but surely greasing stainless to carbon fiber either negatively affects carbon fiber or it doesn't. Thanks!

I really like ridley, the only thing i dont like are they carbon cockpits like the cirrus pro, F1 G1 etc... I've had a lot of bad experiences with these as a bikeshop mechanic, often there are carbon flakes, sharp edges and other things on the inside of these. There is not enough room to fit 4 cables for mechanical shifting in there aswell, we have had so many struggles with these things, a quick headset change takes us up to 2 - 3 hours, we charge the customer 150€ for it.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec Жыл бұрын
Hey, the headset thing is true of most brands these days now. I didn't see any sharp edges on this frame. I have a Noah Fast in now though, so will take a close look at that. Thanks for adding your experience.
@larsdohmen6796
@larsdohmen6796 Жыл бұрын
@@Mapdec true, the problem with the ridley's is that they all use a D-shaped steerer with the normal small bearings, because of this all the cables get cramped. When they get cramped they pish each other into the edge where they enter the stem. When you take one appart you should also be able to see a wedge that fills the other half of the d shaped steerer, this wedge caused us a lot of trouble aswell with brake hoses getting crushed or Di2 cables getting stuck. But you will definitely see for yourself, good luck with them!

If that is the QC on the outside you better hope the paint isn't covering poor welds. Mass production and expensive. The sooner people start going back to proper frame builders the better. Pay once for something special that will be perfect.

I've been riding Ridley bikes for 20+ years and never had a problem. Currently have a Kanzo Fast and it's a joy to ride. QC is probably lower on the Kanzo A as it is their cheapest entry level bike. Also, if you get a Ridley, get a custom paint job. It will cost you only 100-450 EUR extra and the quality control is better on individual paint jobs then it will be on the ones done in series. Well, at least up to now because they have a new painting line since a few weeks to do series...so that may improve as well as they will be done in-house now.

@@Mapdec You as a bike shop shouldn’t have to worry about getting an ultra sound to evaluate carbon frame quality in the first place. Any product that you buy new, should be flawless. You don’t buy a car and drive it out of the showroom right to your mechanic to have it checked. But the reality in the cycling industry is that bike branks ask astronomical prices for piss-poor engineering and you as a bike shop have to deal with a huge mess of QC-fails, manufacturing defects and design flaws...

@@Mapdec I guess normally an informed customer who stops buying shit products for bad prices. And maybe legal institutions that enforce stricter safety regulation for bike frames and production. But to be honest, I guess the “informed” part still needs a lot of time. Marketing is very big and too much cyclists have to much money to burn. Exactly for that reason, I highly value channels like yours, peak torque, hambini and co. because you are an independent source of information.

I’m struggling to think of another industry for premium products where this would be accepted, it baffles me that the bike industry haven’t sorted this out and that just about every brand seems guilty of the same thing, poor QC control due to poor finishing from the factory. I genuinely think they don’t care, it’s marketing above engineering every time. If this comment seems defeatist then perhaps it’s too many videos of this kind from yourselves and Hambini demonstrating to us how crap the industry can really be.

@@MapdecMaybe, difference is with cars is that you usually buy from a dealer who will put things right under the warranty period, it’s more often than not a change of a part that’s failed with a car, not a fundamental issue with how the structure of the car goes together.
