Napoléon and Josephine's relationship never really ended. Even after their divorce, their letters to one another were incredibly beautiful. I think biographers (and particularly KZfaq creators) have a tendency to dismiss her and their relationship, but she was of vital importance to his early rise in building his social network. She remained the most important woman in his life.

@@robotjeans That is wildly incorrect. Aside from her very clear heartbreak at their divorce it is also clear from the letters they continued to exchange until Napoleon's exile, the fact he visited her at Malmaison and she was delighted to see him, that she liked his company. Even beyond romantic affection, she was profoundly grateful to him for being a father to her two children by Alexandre. While it is true their early years were unsteady for a number of reasons, they became companions. I recommend looking up "The Rose of Martinique", an extensively sourced biography of Josephine.

Ridley Scott's first movie was The Duellists (two years before Alien, which I think is when he really "made it big"), starring Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel. Two Napoleonic French cavalry officers who basically fight an ongoing episodic duel over 20-ish years, with Napoleon's campaigns as the backdrop. Great flick, and probably not nearly as well known as most of Scott's films. Worth looking up for a watch. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I really like it when they find a way to hit all the important story beats. It doesn't matter to me if Napoleon meets Josephine after Egypt, so long as they get the relationship right and the story is watchable. I really don't care about continuity in historical drama - for that you need a book, a documentary, or a 37 hour TV Series by the BBC. In a two hour movie you'll need to move stuff around to make it compelling in between the epic set pieces.

@@airborngrmp1 I kind of prefer bio pics that focus one specific portion of the subject's life instead of trying to fit in the entire life story in 2 and a half hours. Otherwise, a series would be more appropriate ala the John Adams miniseries. What they did with Lincoln was perfectly done, focused mainly on the last year of his life. There's just no way you can squeeze everything into 2-3 hours for Napoleon.

Napoleon should be at least two movies. His rise and fall covered roughly a 25 year period and most of that was constant warfare. Things that could be added if there were more than one movie would be the Italian campaigns against the Austrians, the campaigns against the Prussians, the naval battle of Trafalgar it’s impact and the campaigns fought in Spain and of course Russia. There is so much historical content it couldn’t all be contained in one movie.

The French flag, as shown in the film, did not exist in this form. It was not until 1830 that its current form was formalized. At that time the flags of the revolution and the empire had several appearances with only one obligation, to have blue, white and red. This aspect is visible on David's painting "The Eagle Delivery" in 1804.

One day, i dream of a movie about napoleon where the ACTUAL history is the story, that the corsican tyrant was an utter despoiler, mad man and psychotic. That he demanded hegemonoc dominion and nothing he brought anywhere had anything to do with 'law' or 'order' and definitively NOTHING to do with 'democracy'. But because america was supported by the french against britain in its 'independence' movement and then the psychotic dictator of america was supported by france in the american civil war... well, france cannot be shown as the bad guys they were.

I’m so excited for this! Trailer looks awesome! I’m curious if they will have any flashbacks to him growing up on Corsica or his schooling when he developed the personality/character that he exemplifies as an adult? Way back in college I wrote a paper about the path he took and the input his surroundings and experiences as a young adult had in really shaping the man he became (instead of thinking/believing that once he rose to power he all-of-a-sudden became the type of person he was). Essentially I tried to show that he wasn’t “evil” per se but that because of his experiences in the Corsican revolts and lack of a true father figure that gave him validation he adopted his country as the father figure he was trying to impress and therefore could only try to go bigger and bolder instead of finding a natural stopping point where he could be content.

I'd imagine Waterloo is an opening with the rest of the story being essentially a flashback. I'm trying to place that last scene - the most famous incident involving Napoleon and the drowning of large numbers enemy troops through the shattering of the ice was at the battle of Austerlitz and that happened only at the end of the battle as the Russians are trying to retreat but this has him firing on attacking troops from an ambush and the white uniforms say the troops are Austrian.

As long as they hit the major points. Because the actual Napoleon’s life was so epic you hardly need to change anything to entice the audience. The real deal was epic enough. A man who came from a not so prominent family in nowhere Corsica, rose up the ranks during one of the most wild, influential, and famous national revolutions in history, and became a self proclaimed emperor of a new empire he built through absolute military genius nearly single-handedly beating back every other major European superpower time and time again until they had to band together to take him down! Dude took on the whole world by himself😂! Got exiled, ESCAPED exile and when he met the armies opposing him from France they literally ran to his side😂! Only to be defeated by another military genius in one of the most epic and famous battles in human history! I’m sorry but if that isn’t an epic Hollywood blockbuster I don’t know what is. Oh yeah and the best part is… it actually happened😂

As a historian in training in the field of diplomatic history, who's more interested in the social/cultural aspects of the Napoleonic period, it'll be interest to see how they'll portray Napoleon's penchant for transforming his self-image, as well as the disastrous consequences of his warmongering in Europe. It may not be historically accurate chronologically, but if they hit that theme right it might just be good P.S. I disagree a bit on the warmongering part. The vast majority of the wars he engaged seemed clearly defensive (minus Spain and Russia overall). So I am not sure who was the warmongering between him or the UK fedspoon European countries who kept declaring war to France (or him) because the monarchy system (and current balance) may be in danger. Him winning most of the time does not make him fully responsible of the casualties. The casualties were terrible, but the final outcome of his existence led to stabilized nations, downfall or loss of power of monarchies (not necesserarily violently) and a solid code system copied by many modern countries. Sometimes this is the cost of big changes. I do agree that towards the end of his reign (before his comeback) he was way too relentless despite the disadvantage he was in, bleeding his own country and beyond.

Maybe Spain was Napoleon being a warmonger, but Russia was violating their own treaty to enforce the continental blockade. @@Jymvador My own research for my master's in history revolves around the lead up to the Congress of Vienna. Many of the sources that I've encountered did show that Napoleon had no hesitations of declaring war against the other powers. France still had a very large supply of resources and manpower that can mobilize effectively, greater than any other great power save Britain and Russia. The other great powers had real reason to see Napoleon as a threat (besides the revolution). Even then, it wasn't just ideology that was motivating the Coalitions. Napoleon had a habit of not keeping the terms he agreed to in his treaties, especially in the German and Italian lands. There's also the matter of Napoleon's Continental System, which was only created as a blockade against Britain and nothing else. Furthermore, he often placed members of his family and personal cohort as monarchs for his client states. And let's not forget his huge ambition. I think those are all reasons to consider Napoleon as a threat to stability outside ideology. I mean, you could say the wars are defensive. Taking all the factors I've mentioned together though, there was reason for the other powers to declare war on him, and Napoleon found that exhilarating. Now for the destruction those wars caused, I think there are many sources that I could think of that support that claim, but David Bell's book on Total War I think is the best in describing this.

Not true he learned French around the age of 8 used to pronounce some words with a Corsican accent (like an italian patois that still exists in Corsica, every region of France at the time had its own patois words & accent, that's still the case, even though some accents disappeared like the ones from the west of the country i'm from the west of France myself ) he used to make some spelling mistakes when he was writing from the battlefield (which was a bit logic considering the lack of time & hard moments he was going through during a campaign) but not to the point he was speaking bad french, had an awful accent and it was hard to understand or read him... That's part of the "black legend" some haters tried to create about him like "he wasn't enough French" which is very funny considering his life story, all he did for France & because nowadays as soon as an african arrive in France & speak bad french, some politicians try to tell us they are french like the ones who have been in the country for centuries... Napoleon could have never rised like he did with bad language, epecially after he done a prestigious military school where education was extremely hard & strict and learning of French Cuture & everything was so intense to get your degree & evolve in your career...

As a reenactor, I see this all too often when 70% of the people in the battle are in their 40s and 50s or even above. It just takes away the energy and dynamic.

As good as this looks, the trailer seems to me to get the Battle of Austerlitz very wrong. They seems to show french artillery firing onto the Frozen ponds as a trap laid by Napoleon. That's not what happened. Russian troops were fleeing from the battlefield (the battle had effectively been won by the seizure of Pratzen Heights), and continued French artillery fire (either intentionally or accidentally) caused fractures and holes in the ice, although it's disputed as to how devastating this was to the Russo-Austrian Forces. Ultimately I don't think you can do Napoleon's story justice in a single film. A Miniseries of 10 parts would be better.

The writers had to take shortcuts. The Egyptian campaign itself could fit into a 2-hour film.

@@JeagerGray Which begs the question of why this had to be a single film instead of a limited series.

@@HalfLifeExpert1 I don't think a series about Napoleon would be very popular. Even a 2 hour historical film in this time period is very audacious, I don't think it's gonna appeal to a wide audience. I may be wrong though

The best Napoleon I've seen so far is the 1970 film Waterloo with Rod Steiger and Christopher Plummer. I also saw a special Abel Gance presentation of a silent-era Napoleon done in an early version of Cinerama (yes, Cinerama) with a live orchestra, etc. Top that!! Anxiously waiting to see this one.

I found a great comment in the comments on the trailer which I think is get accurate. Either this movie will be amazing or it will be over for for him. I do try and stay positive tho and so far the movie looks very good. But I’m cautiously optimistic.

I am very hyped but there is no way in hell they can put his whole life in one movie. Even the most important of all the most important events from his life cannot be put into one movie in any sensible way. Also I hope we don't get the usual English crap about Napoleon especially considering that Ridley is English himself.
