It's an ironsighted 1920 Savage rifle that was left to me that I retired after my grandfather passed. He always laughed because I couldn't beat him regarding marksmanship 😂 I found his secret, he drank 2 beers or a few shots of Jack to ease his nerves👍👍

I picked up a 99 in 300 savage in a pawn shop on a whim. I did not know much about the 99. However, I have learned a lot. I also realized that I need the dies after paying $85 a box for ammo. Can't wait to head to the eastern woods with my 99.

Unfortunately that is never going to happen. The current president of Savage has made that abundantly clear. There just aren’t enough model 99 fans to justify the enormous cost of resurrecting the 99. That would jeopardize Savage’s current success that he has guided them to and could possibly bankrupt them. The old machinery is gone. To redesign the 99 for CNC machining processes would be a massive project with no income produced before a single rifle was produced for testing long before one was brought to market.

My father's deer rifle was a 1939 Model 99 in 300 Savage. He died in 1984 and the rifle went to my brother-in-law. After his death, I contacted my sister inquiring about the rifle's whereabouts. I learned my niece had possession of it. At my mother's funeral in 2018 the rifle was returned to me. It is still in excellent condition. I don't hunt, but do take it to the range a few times a year. I had collected enough brass prior to the 2020 madness that I should be able to hand-load this cartridge for years to come. It seems to like 125 grain projectiles with Win 748 toward the higher pressures, routinely sub MOA.

To pick a nit, the 30.06 is actually the parent cartridge (which was based on the 8mm Mauser) of both the 250 & 300. Like and use both of the old Savage cartridges. I use Lake City .308/7.62 NATO to make 300 Savage cases. One trip through the 300 Sav FL die then trim the neck length down. All the best

I have owned and hunted with a model 99 in 300 Savage for over 40 years. While mainly used in the deer woods of Arkansas, it is totally capable of elk sized animals using a 165 grain partition or cup and core bullet at ranges under 250 yards. I have many rifles in different cartridges, but when hunting whitetail deer I find the Savage 99 a wonderful chice no matter the caliber!

Ya. Like many, my Grandpa wanted a bit more than an 1894 for the SD Prairie and bought a Savage 99 from the local Coast to Coast Hardware in 1956. He bought a Weaver 4 power and three boxes of ammo. He was not a target shooter. I have whats left of his ammo. I have his rifle. I smoked a big whitetail from the front, right through the brisket at 88 yards with a 70 year old Silvertip. The deer's chin hit the ground first. This is still a near perfect deer cartridge. Especially with modern powder and bullets.

The 300 Savage is the parent case of the 308 Winchester. When it was introduced in 1920 in the Savage model 1920 rifle, which was a modified short action 98 Mauser action, the 300 matched the 150 grain military loading of 2700 fps in the same length 24” barrel. Unfortunately for Savage, the model 99 lever gun chambered in 300 Savage far outsold the 1920. The model 1920 was the original lightweight mountain rifle available in 250-3000 with a 22” barrel and 300 Savage with a 24” barrel. It weighted just 5 lbs, 14 oz. The action was originally designed for 30-06 when Savage was competing for the U.S. military contract. It lost out to the 1917 Enfield. The action was shortened 1.25 inches for the sporting rifle with a slim walnut stock with a Schnabel style foreend. In 1926 the action was beefed up somewhat and a little heavier stock added but it was still a light weight rifle. It is often referred to as the 1920/26. The 300 Savage is plenty good for elk out to 300 yards. It was successfully taking elk in the west, especially with the model 99 long before the 308 Winchester was even thought of. Bullet design and shot placement are still the key. At ethical shooting distances, most hunters can’t consistently keep their shots in the kill zone under real world hunting conditions , which is not much over 300 yards, the 300 Savage gives up very little to the 308 Winchester. The best bullets are undoubtedly the 150 and 165 grain Nosler Partion and Accubond bullets. The 180’s are stretching it unless ranges are kept to not over 200 yards. The Hornady 150 grain Superformance load at 2740 fps out of a 24” barrel comes close to factory 308 load velocities but I think the SST bullet is best left for Whitetails and Mule Deer. The thing that hurts the 300 Savage the most is SAAMI’s artificially low MAP that is based on unfounded fears that the early Savage model 1899 steel was not strong steel. Ridiculous considering that the 1899 had steel just as strong and quality as the German steel used in the 1893 Mauser shooting the original 193 grain 7x57 with its pressure of 50,370 C.U.P. By the time the 300 Savage cartridge was introduced in 1920 the steel in now model 99 was the same quality as the 03 Springfield and all the P14 and P17 Enfield. The same model 99 action has been chambered in 308 Winchester since 1956! Today there are no rifles chambered in 300 Savage but it’s not hard to find a short action Remington Model 722 for not too much money for a quality rifle. The limited edition 125th anniversary model 110 or Remington 700 Classic from 2003 will set you back a little more.😊

@@TheQCollection How cool! I’m envious. At the moment my only 300 Savage is a 1955 Model 99 F. I also have a 1951 99EG in 250-3000 with its original K4 Weaver and a later model (1972) 99F in 308 Winchester . I had a 1948 99EG in 300 Savage but traded it for something else. I’m always watching for classic old rifles to ad to my collection.

I'm just cleaning my cases, and looking over my notes from this past week in the mountains tuning in. Thats a great one it's been a fantastic cartridge that I've loaded for my late grandfather for years with 150gr and 165gr Nosler Partition before we leave. I've never been able to beat his group to this day @200yds using with the same bullets outta my '06. I got alot of respect for the 300 Savage for what it's capable of and what he took with it.👍👍

It's not an ideal rifle but it's definitely capable! We have 2 model 99s in the family. My brother has one in 308. I wish Savage would bring back the mobel 99. It was way ahead of its time!

I have a Remington 722, 2 Savage 99’s a 1927EG and a 52 R along with a Remington 700 form 2003 all in .300 Savage. I have been hunting and loading the .300 Savage since I was 11 years old with the 722 that was granddads along with the 52 99R I got later. The .300 Savage with the proper load from a 110gr bullet for Antelope to a 180gr Hotcor or Partition for Elk and Moose will work very well with in its limits. The longest shot I have taken was a 275 yard shot with a 180gr Partition that two shots took the heart and lungs out of and it went down where hit after 10-15 seconds. Long enough to get the two shots off and the beginning of a third when it folded. In my experience the .300 Savage is a highly capable cartridge that will and has taken everything in the world including a Whale in Alaska at one point. I have even taken a big Alaskan Grizzly bears with a 170gr Silver tip a couple of times. Black Bear also with the same load. Deer loads are a 150gr partition over 41.2 gr 3031. This has been one of the best loadings I have seen for the savage and now I also load a 135gr and 150gr TSX Barnes bulles that is extreamly accurate. The 300 savage may be an obsolete cartridge today but it is still very very capable of doing it was intended to do with the proper hands

The .300 Savage is still a very useful cartridge. Deer, Black Bear, and most game animals of this size. Keep range modest at say 200 yards, and place your bullets correctly 👌 and that's about all you need. It will take moose. But you had better know how to shoot and where to hit 'em.

I had a .300 Savage in a Model 99 for a couple of years. I let it go last year, not because there was anything wrong with it, but because it really did nothing, obviously, that my .30-06 couldn't do better; plus, for my area it just doesn't have the range I'd like. That's not a knock on the cartridge, and I really liked the Savage Model 99 (BTW, it was made in 1952 and with my 150 gr. handloads shot consistently just under one MOA), but I could not justify keeping it around. Besides, it had become extremely difficult to find brass for, so I resorted to making .300 Savage brass from .308 Winchester brass, which worked well but I didn't want to continue to put that much effort into it any longer. And you are correct, the neck of the round is exceedingly short, almost to the point of absurdity. On a side note, under the steel butt plate I found a yellowed piece of paper with the words written in cursive, "Steve Paschal, Colorado Springs, Sept. 1952," which I though was pretty dang cool.

My Indian guide had been borrowing his Dad's rifle for years as they are very poor on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Im into Savage 99 rifles and had come across an old rancher's saddle gun at his auction. It had the stock shortened, drilled and tapped, screw in sling swivel, ranchers name engraved. Not a collectors item. I gave it to him, along with some good reloads, and he hammered a 150 class whitetail in the lungs a month ago. Totally destroyed the lungs. Not an ounce of meat hurt. He said, " Thats an Indian's gun." I said, " it is now."

I have two family members that shot a lot of deer with a 300 savage here in Maine. They swore by it. They both said it puts em down immediately. They said it works much better than a 30-06. I didn’t believe them. So l tried it myself. To my amazement they were spot on. I have never seen deer drop so fast. I was in disbelief to say the least. I used 150 grain core lokts. Doesn’t go through them. Always stuck in the hide on the off side. My cousin always used the 180 grain core lokt round nose. Those always went completely through but the results were the same.

All groups were within 2.75. Now i did have 3 rounds of hollow points at 150 grain. They were handloaded nearly 45 years ago. There’s always something faster, and as you say better, but the fact is it all has to do with the distance that you’re going to be shooting for hunting or what have you, I don’t really like the word better, what’s appropriate for the distance that you’re going to be shooting is a better term For instance, if you’re shooting in the woods of Maine, you don’t need a 300 Winchester mag, if you’re shooting in open areas or going to be sitting on the powerline then that’s a different story ! PS. Seems like everything today falls in the term of hunting or shooting at distances up to 7 to 800 yards. Many animals suffer because of those decisions !

I have taken 3 bull moose in my life: the first with a 303 Savage that dropped where it stood, second with a 303 British and it ran about 20 yards, the third with a 308 Winchester and he ran about 30 yards. All were between 100 and 150 yards. The 303 British with 180 grain bullet is neck and neck with a 30-06 and we all know the capability of the 308. Out to 300 yards I would be as happy to have that 303 Savage or a 300 Savage as I would any other rifle for any critter in North America including grizzly’s: over 300 yards I don’t shoot. Right on. Both the rifle and cartridge have well respected histories.

Still hunt with my Savage Model 99F featherweight. 150 grain speed is just a tad above 2700fps

200-250 fps isn't squat if you are a rifleman and know your weapon. The 300 Savage is plenty. It doesn't match an 06 but it does match the Krag and that's plenty for anything in N.A. if you can shoot. Always was, always will be. Supposed range advantages of the big powder wasters are really illusion for 95% of hunters anyway. Take your 99 or 81, learn it and be very happy.

Any cartridge designed or wildcatted in the last 100 years is redundant. .300 Savage, .250 Savage, 30-30, 30-06, 25-06, .375 h&h, etc are all anyone needs. New rounds are just vanity and marketing.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that.

@@hopefulballistics Seriously, can you name ANY cartridge designed since 1924 that doesn't have a predecessor that is as qualified? Name it.

@@finallyfriday. 308 is a better round than 300 Savage, definitely better than 30-30. Doesn’t mean those cartridges aren’t capable, just a better, more efficient version. Some others are as follows. 284 Winchester, 7 Rem Mag, 222 Remington, 300 WBY, 300 WSM, 243 Winchester, etc. That is just a drop in the bucket. It doesn’t mean the 30-06 doesn’t still work today, it definitely does. Why wouldn’t you want innovative, modern, cartridge designs? That have better max pressure, more efficient geometry, etc. Will the 30-30 still work? Absolutely. Why wouldn’t you want the 300 WSM and have more options like a little more range?

@finallyfriday why veer away from proven calibers? 25/06 blows the needmoor out of the water out to 300 yds all day long, 300 savage kills just the same as 308, game doesn’t know the difference? It’s all in marketing and people’s brains….. there have been plenty of failures you forget about also……224 Val, 325 wssm? Yeah, I’ll stick to decades of reliable cartridges

@@hopefulballistics Since you're comparing more powerful bullets to weaker ones it sounds like your right. "The so and so is more powerful than the such n such." Okay, then I can say "The .375 H&H is more powerful than the .308." Of course you "win" with that kind of selective comparisons. Reality is there is no new bullet that doesn't have a similar older bullet.

My dad has killed over 100 dear with his 300 savage also in a model 99 savage he has had the gun for over 40 yrs only knock is a really heavy trigger and the is no way to adjust it. It's basically a 308 just a little slower
