Full Rig Details: bit.ly/ChelseaGrinRR
Death metal is a genre built on precision and power. Chelsea Grin’s articulate picking and gut-rattling riffs are its foundation. But thanks to a rotating cast of ripping guitarists (including Rig Rundown alumnus Jason Richardson), their five albums have shown subtle brick-and-mortar flair by incorporating elements of djent, metalcore, doom, black metal, and even post-hardcore. The current lead guitar chair has been filled by Stephen Rutishauser since 2015. His input has given their chaotic sound a more meticulous gnarl and complex rhythmic density that binds discord and darkened melodies.
Hours before Chelsea Grin’s rare club gig at Nashville’s the End, the gruesomely heavy guitarist invited PG’s Chris Kies onstage to talk gear. In this RR, the band’s face-melter details the sparkle-covered Petrucci signatures that he carries on tour and breaks down the dialed-in digital patches that color their brutal barrage.

Really refreshing to see a modern guitarist with standard scale 7s and surprisingly light strings for his respective tunings. Yeah, it's floppier but I really like that loose feel with a bright snappier tone which must be really satisfying to play with the tone they have.

It's funny to me that people are hating on the tone, which might make sense without the context of the full band playing, but DAMN - live and on records, it sounds like every person has their specific place and they lock together really nicely. It definitely sounds a little honky without the rest of the instruments, but throw in a stupid low tuned bass, drums, and vocals, and it's crushing. And, if you're not a fan of the genre - why are you here? 😂

CG best Deathcore band. Saw them in 2016 open for Attila and Emmure. All 3 bands were amazing but the wall of sound CG had was absolutely unmatched. I believe it was 3 guitarists all playing 7 strings and the bassist had a 5 string. Alex was sounding really good and the whole band was so tight. 10/10 Moment for me.

@@theders8590 It’s the sparkles and the fact I’m not a fan of how the Ernie Ball guitars look, any of them. I hate the stubby small headstock for one. I’m a big Jackson, ESP, & Ibanez guy. My favorite headstock is Jackson’s classic pointy inline headstock, but I know people that hate that headstock, everyone’s preference is different and I simply hate ErnieBall’s Musicman headstock.

As a fan of pointy headstocks, having owned Ibanez, Jacksons and ESP/LTDs, I don't mind the EBMM/Sterling headstocks. I think they look good. As for the guitar bodies, the JP lineup from the JP6 to the JP15 all look great to me but the Majesty lineup is hit or miss for me. They look great in some colors and absolutely awful in others. I like my pointy superstrats from the aforementioned 3 brands but I own a JP60 and it looks great. It's a body shape that I think is very aesthetic and got even better after it became sharper after the JPX. Not a fan of most of their other shapes though. I like Jason Richardson but I wouldn't buy a Cutlass for example.

Nowhere near as floppy as you'd be led to believe, 62 is really a pretty heavy string.
