On April 22 in Nashville, Premier Guitar met with guitarist Pete Loeffler and bassist Dean Bernardini of the band Chevelle before their sold-out show at the Cannery Ballroom. Loeffler gave us the lowdown on tuning to C and answered a questions posted by our Facebook followers. Bernardini showed us some cool mods on his Ibanez basses and explained how to make a stage look appropriately creepy.
Loeffler does not travel with a ton of guitars, just a few favorites to get the job done. A Fender Subsonic Stratocaster with Seymour Duncan pickups does most of the heavy lifting. His #2 is a heavily modified Fender Strat featuring two Seymour Duncan humbuckers. Like many gearheads, Loeffler can’t remember the actual models or names of these Duncan pickups, he just digs their sound.
Loeffler remains a life-long Boogie man, having played the same rig for his entire professional career. The Chevelle sound ends with a Mesa/Boogie Mark IV plugged into two Mesa/Boogie 4x12 cabs. A second Mark IV functions as a backup.
For more info on Loeffler and Bernardini's setup, click here: bit.ly/ChevelleRR

That's always my approach when writing music. Not that I'm playing in a band now or have anytime recently, but I still always consider it - could I replicate this song properly live(with no more than two guitarists)? As a fan of rock/metal, it's never really appealed to me this idea of making your studio albums these projects that are full of flourishes that might sound good, but it's like, in this genre, doesn't that make it a little inauthentic? A little too overproduced? It can still be good music, but I want something that really feels like I can imagine the band playing it, not this exercise in careful production.

Where in the hell is Rebeca? Of course Pete and Dean do the interview that a lot of "artists" brush off and delegate to their techs. That was the most interesting bass segment on Rig Rundown. I really appreciate the way you let the artist explain his gear rather than trying to wow him/them w your knowledge of gear. Im not the greatest guitar player (i wish i was better) but i thoroughly enjoy watching a pro talk about his stuff and why he likes it. Its like that for anything i may not b a bomb ass football player but i like to hear a great player talk about his tools and why he digs them. Well done.

I'm loving this trend of lower tuned metal guys embracing fenders. I play lot of hardcore and skram type stuff through Modern Player Telecaster (these would have been made 2016/17-ish). I have it tuned to drop C# and I actually LOVE what the tele twang adds to low tuned riffs. The guirist from Trigger Point played a stratocaster in drop B and his stuff sounds great. Just listen to all of the Giving Up The Ghost album. The guys in underoath love themselves some fenders and gibsons. I think their main guitariat plays either a fender jaguar or a jazzmaster.

The biggest issue I have with one-guitar bands is trying to bring that sound live. Particularly while singing like, you just aren't really going to capture your own sound properly by coming out with one dude on guitar who has to juggle singing, when the song has 2-4 guitar tracks on the record... Saves on costs and control by not having a second guitarist but really, just have a second guitarist

They covered it all - but c'mon you guys couldn't show the guitar/bass brands/gauges of strings and guitar pick type and gauges that they use? They are all an important part of the signal chain as well.

And then they went back to Drop b on TNX and he said they're gonna bring back Drop A for this new one. I also wouldn't mind hearing that album Front to back!!!

@@patrickstar6247 I mean from what I can hear, the songs on La Gargola and The North Corridor might all be Drop C, but B and C are so close that it can be hard to distinguish sometimes.
