Rig Rundown: Deer Tick

Deer Tick was started by self-taught multi-instrumentalist John McCauley as a solo songwriting endeavor in 2004. The band’s instant, ear-perk appeal is McCauley’s wiry, craggy voice narrating personal hardship and loss. When you hear Deer Tick albums, the honesty that pours out of the speakers punches your gut and tears your heart.
Originally touring with a revolving cast of supporting musicians, McCauley solidified his rhythm section with half-brothers Dennis Michael Ryan (drums) and Christopher Dale Ryan (bass) before finalizing things with Ian Patrick O’Neil on guitar in 2009. The band’s staying power and relevance is rooted in their ability to cross-stitch ringing hi-fi Americana harmonies and lo-fi alt-country vibes with melancholic Nick Drake moods and trouncing honky-tonk rumblers with tattered rockers perfect for Iggy or Kurt. That amalgamation is both timeless and contemporary. (It’s worth noting that McCauley-a self-proclaimed Nirvana nut-sang and played guitar alongside surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear during Cal Jam 2018.)
Before Deer Tick’s co-headlining show with Delta Spirit at Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl, McCauley (vocals/guitar) and Ian Patrick O’Neil (guitar/vocals) chatted with PG’s Chris Kies. The conversation covered Teles (and why they're the duo’s current favorites) and how Fender combos have always factored into the band’s sonic scripts for stage and studio. Plus, both pickers provided a quick-and-dirty sampling of their stomp situations.

Man, Ian's tweed twin was really bringing some stellar sounds when I saw them in Denver a few months back. I probably contracted COVID at the show, but it was totally worth it.

Thank you Deer Tick (PMG too) for always Giving The Local RI shops a shout out like Empire. I love the positive vibes and usually Mentioning Prov. R.I..The scene in Providence is very special to me. From Having to get Tetanus Shots from getting cut/splinters from The Living Room stage to Firehouse 13 and Started with Doc at the Century/The Call letting us idiots play our horrible rock/punk originals for years. We Cut our teeth on Tuesday open mics for years then progress to giving us our first real gig. Now i’m so lucky to have grown my RnR Family for 22years. This RR is special to me being Born and raised in the Providence Scene. Always take away something that works for me or give a try! Deer Tick,GP and any who reads this is welcome to Come down to our shop Hardcore Hobbies in Coventry RI Remote Control Cars/Trucks on us and break some Toys have some laughs on us just mention this RR!

in reference to 9:56 that Super looks to be somewhere between '68 and '72 since its a silver panel but does not have a master volume

Probably not a 68… those have the drip edge and say “Super Reverb Amp”. Also could be a 73… mine dates to 73 and doesn’t have the master volume.

@@jeffdixon847 yea you're right. the gap visible around 10:02 could also be a slight space where a drip edge once was. could also be velcro-front grill panel from the further down in the 70s era since you can see it raising slightly around the edges. the whole amp could also be an amalgamation of different eras: the chassis, grill cloth, cabinet housing etc could be from diff amps put together into this one. one of my silverfaces is a frankenstein in that exact way.
