Just ahead of releasing his first solo album, Always Smilin’ (via Honey Jar/Thirty Tigers), Oliver Wood invited PG into his Nashville-based studio space. In this episode, the Wood Brothers’ cofounder shows off some key instruments-including his beloved and beaten 1965 Guild T100D, a Stella with a gold-foil, and an acoustic reminiscent of Robert Johnson’s Gibson L-1-rattles small, cranky combos, and details how he looks for inspiration in all the “wrong” moves (like stuffing underwear in a hollowbody, using a wooden slide, and having a gold-foil in a 1930s Stella).

Only had 2 guitar lessons ever. They were from this man. He was unbelievably patient with me. Very kind soul and an amazing player, singer and storyteller.

@user-cg9sc3us1v actually, it was at his house in Decatur, but i did hang out at Galaxy all the time. I bought a relatively low quality gibson sg there one time. It actually played great for the money. I set it up for slide and back then I couldn't play slide to save my life. So I gave that guitar to a young up and coming kid. Can't remember his name, but he was great.

To all of you bitching about the tone of that Guild. Go and check out the Wood Brothers live, preferably in a smallish venue. It'll change your mind.

Saw The Wood Brothers perform in a small radio studio about 10 feet in front of my face, and I've never heard a sound that huge coming from three dudes before or since. Still boggles the mind.

Guy could play a shoebox with rubber bands and make it sound like gold. The sound IS in his fingers.

Probably the least resonant guitars I've heard in a rig rundown and I loved every sound Oliver got out of them. Talk about vintage! Damn, you literally feel like you're listening to somebody in the 1950s. Anyway, I discovered the Wood Brothers about 7 or 8 years ago and I've been a fan ever since...

So excited to see someone else who gets the Kay 703 amp! These things are great and cheap. Be careful - some need to be modded with an isolation transformer so you don't get shocked. Such a wonderful, versatile amp!!

I've found that playing dry (with no reverb or delay) and using guitars with less sustain has made me a better rhythm player. It forces you to improve your timing and to control your fingers on both hands to get some sort of sustain/ ring from what is essentially a dead instrument.

I loved this ,and found it very helpful .I've been messin' around with slide lately while doing the rhythm chord thing ,and will for sure be coping that half G tuning trick, and for all you young bucks I will be sayin' "I'm tuning down to D"ha. I also use my middle finger for the slide ,and thought it was just a bad habit acquired from my first slide ( a bic lighter ha! ) now I'm thinking it might just be an old guy thing : )

Wow totally let this dude here slip under my radar....not sure how! Can’t wait to start listening to some stuff. I’m sure I’ll like if it’s anything close to what he was playing in this video. I have I very similar dogma about small amps and quirky catalog guitars from way back. I play a Gretsch Special Jet with the DeArmond 2000 pick ups and super dark tobacco burst, Gibson Melody Maker, and a 1951 Silvertone f-hole acoustic. My “big amp” is a VHT Ultra Special 6. It’s 15w class A and can go as low as 1w. I usually play on 7watts with all six knobs cranked with only the tone selector between 6-7ish on the clean channel with volume booster pulled up on the volume knob. If it’s a big venue I will do 15 watts instead. And in conjunction with that amp I have my “small amp”a 1930 something-ish Masco with a 7” speaker 4watts classA one knob only and it’s a volume knob cranked at 10. That setup also screams when you play some blues harp Little Walter style!! Yeah I have all kinda of big equipment but for the band I play in now that small rig is heaven so good on ya Oliver Wood!
