And there it is!! You are so right, coincidentally when I was sailing a couple of days ago, I started planing out of some of my Gybes, and it was largely due to what you are explaining here!! Now I can really focus on this part and refine it!! I was having that problem with the board going too far windward and stalling...... Great stuff as always!!

Thanks Cookie! I’m aiming for a full planing jibe and today it felt acheivable thanks to your tips. The wind was just enough to plane, but leaning the mast a wee bit windward entering the jibe gave me much more control and helped the rigflip as well as the exit bringing the mast up and ready for the new reach. Soon a planing jibe hopefully. I’ll keep a small bottle of champagne in the car just in case 😀🏄‍♂️

Another excellent video! That's so true about the need to get the mast to windward after you flip the sail. I had trouble with that for a long time before I fully realized how important that is. That's the key to keeping the board on a broad reach and especially preventing it from rounding upwind. Something that helped me was to focus on keeping my weight low (but not super low) while pulling the mast to windward. I used to have a lot of trouble with the mast dipping downwind during the sail flip and then getting it back into that slightly upwind position. I found that if I keep my weight low I have some leverage to get the mast back upwind. If I forget to keep my weight low, I tend to bend forward at the waist and the board rounds up into the wind.

Interesting tips, I find that recently my quick tacks have become much more consistent... When I mess them up I have begun to realise its usually because I don't have enough speed into the turn, or I turn too abruptly into the wind... I will try your tip re sheeting out a little and then leanng the rig back to increase speed into the tack...

Great tip! Most gybing videos seem to have small non cammed sails and freewave boards. Any chance of some tips for outer footstrap freerace boards with a large twin cammed sail for your size? My most used sail is a 7.5 Turbo or a 7m and I'm 5' 5" - 64kgs so they are really big sails for me..I find it physically challenging to flip them faster when I sail in chop. I use the 7.5m on a 112ltre 64 wide board and the 7m on a 57cm wide - 90ltre.

Hi Cookie, thanks for the great videos … When learning to carve gybe what kind of low end strait line speed (km/h) do you need before starting? At the moment I’m finding that once I start planing, I quickly get to 30 to 35km/h at which point I’m very much not in control, and end up unweighting the harness on bumps, tensing/contracting arms while hooked in, out of control and ripe to catapult. So hoping a bit less speed is sufficient to learn carve gybe. And I can try to work out how to turn upwind a bit to lower the speed, without coming off the plane.

As usual, super useful video with great camera angles!! In the last gybe you show, it seems that at the moment you put your back foot out of the strap and onto the leeward side to carve, you also briefly tilt the rig slightly on the leeward side first before tilting it to windward to "rig steer around the clock", right?

I've been struggling with heading upwind and stalling when trying to get into the foot straps (despite pushing the rig as far forward as possible). I have yet to try this fix but I have a strong feeling that this is exactly what I need!

Thanks Cookie, that s insightful, but then it makes me think that this concept can be applied to the Entry of the power jibe, isn t it? I mean, usually we are taught to enter a power jibe putting the rig forward and in, or at least forward, then sheet in and so on...but couldn t we enter tilting the rig forward and to the outside toward the wind? I suppose this would lead to too much power, but I m curious to hear your thoughts Thanks again

I was taught to move the sail forward or backwards in the plane of the sail - which results in towards and away from the wind respectively. But I'm always asking myself why we need to go further back with the sail when gaining speed, shouldn't this serve as counter steering towards the pushing of the front foot?
