Right Lateral Pelvic Tilt Correction - Left Vs. Right
The lateral pelvic tilt is a postural impairment that can occur when asymmetrical movement patterns reduce our ability to move. The lateral pelvic tilt correction is not the same on the right and the left!
To fix a lateral pelvic tilt on the left, we use first the left hamstring exercise progression we discussed in our previous video. Later, we can utilize many of the same exercises, but the starting point is different.
When we look at fixing a lateral pelvic tilt on the right, we have to consider that we typically have restrictions on the front and back side of the body and often an orientation related issue to the right. Many times addressing the right side can actually correct a left or right pelvic tilt, however starting your exercise progression with activities that open the right side is typically the best bet.
The exception to the rule would be when you have an excessive straight leg raise (beyond 90 degrees) on the left, in which case doing corrective exercises on the left and right will be warranted.
In this video, we demonstrate a simple 5-step exercise progression that can be used to restore movement that is typically lost with a right lateral pelvic tilt.
Enjoy!

I recently came across your videos and I'm so glad. I really like the fact that you have videos on lateral pelvic tilts. I'm pretty sure that this is what I have since I had a fall a few years ago. It feels like my left hip is tilted and I struggle with raising and dropping my left hip. I've noticed it more since I've become more athletic. Whenever I squat or deadlift I feel like I'm not coming up at the same angle (additional tugging in the left hamstrings) and when I try to stretch my left oblique I feel a tugging in my pelvis.
@ChaplinPerformance
@ChaplinPerformance 3 жыл бұрын
Again you have a few clues that the pelvis is being pushed forward more on the left than the right and you've likely got hamstrings that like to behave in a lengthened state on the left. You mention raising and dropping the left hip. What I often find useful in these circumstances is a standing hip hike variation in a slight bit of posterior pelvic tilt with the left foot behind the right foot, right foot elevated. If you get it right you should feel your butt on the right and like you pelvis is getting pushed back and to the left via the right foot. Hope that helps!

I have a lateral pelvic tilt and a slight bit of idiopathic scoliosis. I've been to PT for both, and they told me I was SOL and to put a shoe lift in. Not that I'm opposed to a shoe lift entirely, it's just a bandaid solution in my opinion and I wanted to get to the route of it. The exercises they had me doing, did not work and created more imbalance. I've had this problem for about ten years now. Finding this video, I've done these exercises today, and opening up my right side feels literally SO amazing. I'm hopeful that with time of doing these to correct my bunched up muscles, maybe my tilt be less evident and I'll experience little pain in everyday life. My tilt is about 1.25" and my right shoulder sits a bit higher as well from the overcompensation pushing everything up. Stay tuned to see if this finally helps me! 🤞

Hi! This video is super thorough thanks for making it. I wanted to know if it was possible for me to have a right lateral pelvic shift in about a day? I have not had any drastic changes in posture or any injury in the past week just pretty bad back and hip pain on my right. This happened just yesterday and I'm planning on visiting a doctor but I've been pretty paranoid considering I already have crepitus in my neck and right shoulder.
@ChaplinPerformance
@ChaplinPerformance 2 жыл бұрын
Crepitus is pretty normal. Also, changes in the body that happen fast are usually just part of an acute response. My recommendation is ease off the research and just chill out. Researching, self diagnosis and anxiety producing behaviors will likely make things feel worse than they are. Go to the MD and get it checked out when things calm down a bit. Be easy on your body, it’s doing it’s best!

Hi Greg, Could you please help me determine if this is right or left lateral pelvic tilt? I experience a lot of tightness on my right side with little to no activation of my right glute. When doing isolated exercises my right glute is noticeably weaker than my left. I experience tightness in the hip and backside of the hip, and find it more difficult to sit cross legged using my right leg vs my left (maybe because of the muscles on the back of the hip into my back?). In addition I've got a slightly raised shoulder on the left side. I have watched both of your videos but I am having some difficulty determining which to follow. Thanks in advance!

Thanks very much for the video. I’m 41 and recently had a anterior hip replacement. Before surgery my left leg was a little over 1.5” shorter than the right. I wore a lift in my shoe. After surgery thankfully the doctor corrected this to within about 1cm difference. I no longer wear a lift however I noticed the right side of my pelvis is still high creating a noticeable functional difference in leg length. This is causing terrible lower back pain. My PT says that once the pelvic tilt is rectified it will help correct the deficit. I’m just curious if these exercises will still help with my legs still being about 1cm off? Thanks again.
@ChaplinPerformance
@ChaplinPerformance 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. This type of question is always tough to answer as a PT. If there is a change in structure, there may be a remaining deficit, however with a 1 cm difference, I assume that you will progress fantastically with your PT and achieve a high level of function. Anterior hip replacement is a surgery with typically a very good outcome. I would recommend you follow your PTs program. They will likely be able to focus in on the best exercises for you.

I think you are saying a femur that is externally rotated proximally and internally rotated distally? This would reflect a significant anterior orientation of the pelvis and a twist in the bone. My current idea of how to best address these issues is to identify a root cause for the tension first and foremost. Any threat to your body, whether that be emotional, physical, psychological, or spiritual, can keep the body in a state of tension, especially when these feelings, sensations, thoughts or states are not explored. This particular tilt is very similar to the left AIC pattern. I would focus on first looking at sleep, emotional regulation, overall activity level, nutrition, interpersonal relationships and family dynamics. Once you have taken stock of those and can come to exercise from a place of self compassion and acceptance, then you will have more success with the exercises.

I believe I have a pelvic tilt n my right side, but nobody has being able to pin point it. Some pt told me I have piriformis syndrome, other told me I have arthritis n my right side of my SI joint. Is been 2 years 7 different doctors, hip, spine specialist,.pt, chiropractors and nobody has being able to help me, and the level of pain keeps increasing. My whole right side, SI joint, sacroiliac area, feels so irritated, my external rotator of that glutes feels tight and triggers as sciatic pain joint n my right glute, the front of my hip like around the groin right where the hip and leg flex and extends it hurts too, when I sit, drive, as dull, or stabbing pain sometimes...my right knee feels wrong, as if is trying to give up inwards the and recently began hurting too. I'm wondering if you could post a video of how to self asses yourself to know if there is any type of tilt n the hip area? I really want to understand what is causing so much pain, my mri xray doesn't show much but slightly arthritis... i tried so joint shot but it is helping much neither.... I keep feeling pain anf as right side bones are "twisted" out of place if that makes sense.

I identified myself with left AIC right BC pattern, I guess it has elements of both left and right lateral pelvic tilt in your case (right leg appears shorter as right hip is higher, anterior left ribs externally oriented, right internally)?
@ChaplinPerformance
@ChaplinPerformance 3 жыл бұрын
That would be classic right BC, left AIC. To actually get to the point where a left lateral pelvic tilt is visualized, a significant amount of left posterior (pelvis and thorax) compression would need to be present. I am talking about a specific presentation (extent of compensation) in each of these videos, but the left AIC and right BC patterns are very much in play.

I have been told by several health professionals that’s my “right hip is rotated forward.” I’m having trouble determining if that’s a right or left lateral rotation by your definition. I can’t see it by looking at my body the way some PTs say you can see it. I know my lower right back is more tender when I do any stretch. I do yoga so I can do most of your stretches. Hamstrings and IT bands are very tight. Does this make sense?
@ChaplinPerformance
@ChaplinPerformance 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rhonda. It is difficult to say just from your description. However, if the right side is truly forward, it could really go either way. The farther we push over towards the right side, the more forward the right hip appears to move. In either case, you almost always would want to work on moving the right side back and opening up the stuff area of your back.

Thanks for your video. I have been experiencing problems on the right side of my body for 3-4 years now. Pain and numbness in the are of the periformis, I have better mobility in the left leg than the right one (can't cross my legs with right knee above the left one), right shoulder is lower than the left, it feels as if the right side of the ribcage is locked. What is confusing me the most though is that my intergluteal cleft tilts to the right side. That gives me the impression that the left side of my pelvis is higher than the right one but with all my problems occurring on the right side only I really doubt that. Is it possible to have a right pelvic tilt (right side higher than the left) while the intergluteal cleft tilts to the right? Your answer is highly appreciated.

Lateral pelvic tilt is a visual representation of a significant reduction in movement options (mostly stance phase of gait). Just because one leg appears or measures longer than the other doesn’t mean you will have this visual representation. You may share many of the same reductions in movement options, albeit to a lesser degree. Rarely would I recommend wearing a lift in a shoe but quite often I would recommend an insert or orthotic depending on an individual’s foot type and specific needs. Without seeing how you present, I cannot fully answer your question.
