This song was written for a movie way back called Unchained. Time refers to time in prison. The guy is missing his wife. Bobby Hatfield owns this song. No one has ever sung a song live to match him. Silky smooth, like melting butter and a voice range that defies the imagination. RIP Bobby.

@@stevemontano4544 Yeah, I did. As a matter of fact, I was taking a sip of my wine at the moment he said it and I spit it out all over the screen. It was hilarious and kinda sad at the same time. The idea that someone could actually hear it the way he did and buy that those were the lyrics (I think he said they were beautiful or something) was too much. Not criticizing or mocking him; i applaud that he's expanding his musical experience - it just said a lot to me about what's out there these days!

The Righteous Brothers were dubbed, "Blue-Eyed Soul" back in the day. Bobby sang this song live on the Andy Williams TV Show. When he recorded the studio album version, he didn't sing the G4 (G5-?) high notes rather, he finished the song at a lower octave. This version is a one of a kind performance. The song is already 55yrs old and will forever withstand the test of time. Why? Because, "Class never goes out of Style".

Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley, The Righteous Brothers (not blood brothers) were a duo in the 1960's. Bobby was solo on this song, bill on piano, and arranged. This was a live performance, Bobby had a cold, and was nervous as his parents were in the audience, and yet, he gave a stellar performance!. Meaning of: "time goes by so slowly and time can do so much" is that over time, feelings can change, circumstances can change, and he is asking her, if she still feels the same and is waiting for him. RIP Bobby!

There are two Righteous Bros but at times they did solos. Bobby that did this song was the tenor voice and Bill Melody was the baritone voice they shouldn't have blended together but they did and it was pure magic. THEY WERE SOUL and HEART.They were also known as the blue eyed soul Bros. Many artists before and after him have done this song but no one will ever do this song like Bobby Hatfield 💔. This song was originally done for a prison movie about a guy who was missing his woman and hoping she'd be waiting for him.This performance was sheer perfection. ALSO 25 yrs later it became a hit again because they played it in the movie Ghost. LISTEN to You've Lost that loving feeling by them. This song was played more than any other song in American Radio history.No other song has ever surpassed it. Not country they were named the Righteous Bros by a guy who was in the audience and yelled That's Righteous Brother.THis happened while performing near a marine base and if they liked something they say that's Righteous Brother and they took that name from then on.Little history lesson Soul not country

I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something write because we're still together and she still puts up with my singing. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on 3 of our baby's when I was home, we adopted the young afghan woman and her 2 daughters at the end of 2015 after they saved my life in Afghanistan (a story for another time), and we are so much better for having them, we love all our family and that is our strength. I served my Queen and Country for 34 years in the Royal Marine Commandos and later in the British Special Forces, and then 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm mainly wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.

‘Godspeed’ is an antiquated term that means ‘as fast as possible’ like asking God to intervene and hurry something along or to move as fast as God. This song is sung from the perspective of a prisoner to the love of his life asking her to affirm that she’s still his. He is asking if the time he’s been in prison has changed her feelings.
@ChicagoDB
@ChicagoDB 3 жыл бұрын
The line isn't "Godspeed your love..." it is "God speed your love, to me..." Additionally, 'Godspeed' doesn't mean 'as fast as possible'...it means 'best wishes; success; good fortune/luck'...it was a common expression to those who starting a new venture or traveling or voyage. But the line in the song is "God speed your love, to me"...meaning exactly that.

Donn Baca I disagree with you, and your interpretation of ‘Godspeed’ is the modern evolvement of its practical application - like “I’ll be damned”!, the usage has evolved but the origin of the phrases meaning is exactly as I have stated. Period.

I think it's funny when you said he was a player. His mother was in the audience, and that smile to me is that he nailed it in front of mom. To understand the lyrics, this song comes from a prison movie, Unchained. And the song is from the point of view of a prisoner singing to his girl on the outside. When he says times moves so slow and can do so much, is to me time is crawling for himn in his cell, but so much is happening to his girl on the outside. That's what I get. Great song, great rendition.

The song was written for a 1955 movie called Unchained, about a guy in prison who couldn’t wait to get back to his girl. The guy who wrote the lyrics refused to put any of that stuff into the song so it became a general love song, sung by many before the Righteous Brothers did it .. but nobody else did it like this, altho many other singers covered the song later (including Elvis) and based their versions of it on this version by The Righteous Brothers ... It is a solo song, but the Righteous Brothers were a duo so they flipped a coin to see who was going to do it, and Bobby Hatfield won. The other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for the studio version as well as for this performance AND he played piano while Bobby was singing .. so it was still a team effort. Bobby sang another version for the movie “Ghost “ and this revived interest in the 1965 version (this one) which was then re-released. The Righteous Brothers and this song made history by having two different versions of the same song in the Top20 of the charts at the same time, competing against each other!

Bobby Hatfield has an amazing voice. I always have loved this song. Bill Medley does not appear on this song, he was the other half of the duet. I saw them live when I was young as some theatre in the round that was on Ventura Blvd (I believe), in the San Fernando Valley. I don't know if that place is still there or not but they sold out the show. They used to have another name for their group but while doing a show somewhere, a man in the audience yelled out "That's righteous, brothers!" So they changed their name and the rest is history.

The singer, Bobby Hatfield (1940-2003, RIP) was one-half of the original duo, the Righteous Brothers. Bobby Hatfield voice was considered a high tenor, also referred to as a contratenor or counter tenor. The other partner in the Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley, sang in the baritone-bass voice. Bill Medley still tours as the Righteous Brothers at 82 years old with his daughter McKenna along with Bobby Heard, who sings Bobby Hatfield's part of the song. About where you had probably heard Unchained Melody -- This song was played during the movie Ghost in the scene with Demi Moore's character spinning the pottery wheel with her murdered husband's ghost (Patrick Swayze's character) . Also, here's a song where both Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield sang doo-wop with the group The Paramours (1962) before they became the Righteous Brothers. Bobby Hatfield is singing the lead, with Bill Medley singing the baritone--bass voice hook in the background. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y853qsuWlqzSk4E.html

I prefer respecting the artist and allowing the song to play out before commenting...disruptions with personal comments during a performance break up the flow and experience that a piece of music can have...how the music was affecting you personally during the the performance needed no words...comment after the performance...your physical expressions were all that was needed during the song.

This song takes on more meaning when understood in context...the song comes from a prison movie about a man doing time and singing to his love from prison...In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film (released in 1955).... North then asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics, but Zaret initially declined, saying he was too busy painting his house. North was able to convince him to take the job, and together they wrote "Unchained Melody."...and the rest is history...maybe the most beautifully written romantic song of all time...and as I understand Zaret did eventually get his house painted

I am late watching this. Sorry. Bobby Hatfield played baseball, football and basketball in high school. He was offered a sports scholarship to college which he turned down to pursue a career in music. We are the beneficiaries of that decision. This song was written in 1955 for the film, “Unchained,” which was apparently a box office failure. It was the story of a man in prison who longs for his wife and family, wondering if they will still be there when he gets out. Bobby turned it into a love song for the ages. The night he sang this live, women all over America fell in love with him. I was 23 y.o. When he performed. It was perfect and he was gorgeous! 😍

Bobby Hatfield live performance . The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired Oct 25, 1965: Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.

His MOM was in the audience and he was nervous (with a head cold too). Bobby bit his lip at the end because he knew he nailed it.

song is from a 1955 movie. guy's in prison and longing/singing to his wife. "times goes by so slowly" yeah sitting watching your four walls, "but time can do so much" wondering if she still loves him, hence "are you still mine"

it was referring to soldiers in a far off land, living a daily hell and yet every day seem to go on forever because the soldier left a wife or gf at home and even though they may have had vows or promises, the war drags on for years, and many of those soldiers ended up loosing their wives/gf's because time can do so much to vows and promises and the next line he asks "are you still mine?" as for many soldiers that was a very real worry in the back of their minds, not knowing if the one they loved and left behind when they went off to war would still be waiting for them, and that is when he says "wait for me, wait for me".

Also sorry for commenting so much but I'm doing it incrementally similarly to how you do your song analysis. But your analysis on time can move so slowly but time can do so much was incredible. Definitely a new way of viewing the song.

Bobby Hatfield was THE ABSOLUTE king of this song. (His Mum & Dad were in the audience for this his 1st video debut - so no pressure then)! Note - it originally written for the film 'unchained' by Alex North & 1st performed by Todd Duncan - a "prison film" - hence the track's name & the references made within it.

He had appeared on live TV many times before this. Had previously even performed this song on another program. No one at that time would have understood what a video debut meant. 😊

Bobby was actually very modest, down to earth, and was often nervous on stage, so he definitely WASN'T a player, at least not one with a smug attitude. He sang this solo on a variety show, with Bill Medley - the other member of the Righteous Brothers - playing the piano. Bobby's parents were in the audience that night, too, and that also made him nervous.
