Remember this is1965. There were 500,000 boys in Vietnam and as many girls wondering if they’ll see their boys again. Plenty of tears were shed over this song. 45 rpm records played to the bone . 55,000 never returned.

I am 81 and have heard several artists before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of their albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So, you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we know. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

Love goes back to we don't know when and will go forward until the end of the human race, it is one of the most important elements to having a happy life. It is wonderful when right, and horrible when wrong. Being heartsick/ lovesick is the cause of more misery than anything but death, this song is about a guy in prison wanting his womans love and Bobby hits a home run with this performance. Off the chart great, in my opinion and I love your reaction to it. If you haven't heard Roberta Flack do " The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" it is better than awesome. Ladies & Gentlemen, The GREAT high tenor Bobby Hatfield. Out of this world!
@ingfig1
@ingfig1 3 жыл бұрын
The song was written for a 1955 movie called Unchained, about a guy in prison who couldn’t wait to get back to his girl. The guy who wrote the lyrics refused to put any of that stuff into the song so it became a general love song, sung by many before the Righteous Brothers did it .. but nobody else did it like this, altho many other singers covered the song later (including Elvis) and based their versions of it on this version by The Righteous Brothers ... It is a solo song, but the Righteous Brothers were a duo so they flipped a coin to see who was going to do it, and Bobby Hatfield won. The other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for the studio version as well as for this performance AND he played piano while Bobby was singing .. so it was still a team effort. Bobby sang another version for the movie “Ghost “ and this revived interest in the 1965 version (this one) which was then re-released. The Righteous Brothers and this song made history by having two different versions of the same song in the Top20 of the charts at the same time, competing against each other!

Interesting note is that Bobby Hatfield's mother was among the audience when he sing this song. Remembered this was live when he and his singing partner, Bill Medley were invited guests on a variety show called Andy Williams' Show, nationally televised show. By the way, Andy Williams was a singer, a crooner mostly known for singing Moon River. Bobby and Bill were singing duo until 2003 when Bobby was found dead in his hotel room while being on the road. Now, his former singing partner, Bill still sings with another partner today.

True enough..but the fact remains: .Bobby Hatfield did NOT have to struggle even with highest falsetto notes ...until his body began to break down later in life...Part of his amazing Gift from Almighty God was that he could sing so impossibly well... AND painlessly untroubled, for most of his life. Also why...when Bobby testified during an interview that he did "not consider himself a legend...rather it was Bill who, to him was a legend"....this came as a shock to Bill Medley! You could see how stunned was Bill's reaction to such a humble, truthful admission from a partner that he may even have envied a little....

Thank you so much for your reaction to this beautiful song done by Bobby Hatfield. I grew up in this time and actually went to the same college as they did in Santa Ana, CA. Bobby's range and vocal ability are second to none. This song was very carefully crafted. There were many very romantic songs back in the day. The Righteous Brothers rendition of Unchained Melody has a special place in music history. It has been chosen as the #1 song in the twentieth century above all others. Over time, there were several renditions of this song by other artists before Bobby to it to a new level. Your reaction to this music was very natural and you are lucky to be so sensitive. There are very, very few songs that can make the listener reach a new level of emotional feeling and many people actually get goosebumps listening to it. Many cry from joy. While more modern songs out there today have merit, I am hoping that you will listen to this special song many more times in your life. Doing that will give you peace and joy. Thank you again for making your wonderful video! Best Wishes! Michael

Bobby Hatfield's amazing performance is even more amazing for reasons most folks don't know. This was a Valentine's Day Special on The Andy Williams Show; Bobby & Bill both wore pink sport coats and white trousers; Andy wore a pink pullover (sweater?) and white pants. In the longer version of this film clip, Andy introduces and talks with the duo for a minute or two; Bobby does most of the talking with Bill chiming in a couple times. During their chat, Bobby is huffing and puffing like he had just ran a 100 yard sprint. Actually, he was suffering from an upper respiratory infection. He also suffered from extreme stage fright and would lose his lunch violently before going onstage. On top of all that, the 25 year old singer's mother was in the audience seeing him perform live for the first time and he was terribly afraid of disappointing her. The little lip bite grin at the end ... he knew that he had knocked it out of the park. Someone once said, that at the end of tue performance, as the applause died down, one could hear the sound of dozens and dozens of damp panties hitting the floor; after viewing many reactions to Unchained, I am strongly inclined to believe this is true, even if only speaking figuratively. 💗💗💗

When Bobby Hatfield performed this version in @1955, there were virtually little electronic gizmos that could enhance his voice or mask any shortcoming. His range and control were awesome, inotherwards; a singer had to have real talent-which Bobby did. And he didn't distract you by making unnecessary movements or facial expressions. He was the best.

This beautiful melody was written 68 years ago in (1955) for the Prison Movie "Unchained." It was written by academy award winning composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret. Their collaborative efforts created one of the most loved songs ever. It has been performed by over 1000 singers and orchestras the world over. In (1965) ten years after in a live televised performance. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers and the NBC Orchestra from the Andy Williams Show. Gave a performance of 'Unchained Melody' that was one for the ages. The string section by the NBC orchestra was to die for. Together their performances made this version as the quintessential version of them all. The rest as they say is history.

This is a very beautiful song I remember when the song came out it made every woman cry knowing how much their partner love them so much.. nobody could sing this song better than him what those high notes.. may he rest in peace.. I remember dedicating this song to my ex-girlfriend she broke down and cried so hard because it's a beautiful song that touches the heart and the soul of many people men and women.. like I said there's nobody can sing that song the way he sings it.. I still have the righteous Brothers collection and other oldies that touch the hearts of many people

Nice to see you really enjoyed my and others suggestion, pleading for you to react to this great song and video. LOL Yes you could very well have heard the studio version in the movie Ghost or maybe you were at the Andy Williams Show in 1965. :))) This live version is Bobby Hatfield's masterpiece better than all his other versions and easily the best cover of near 1000 other artists covers of Unchained Melody. He was very nervous before this performance as it was the first time his mother was in the audience at one of his TV performances. You'd never know he was nervous at all, so he turned that nervous energy into motivation to leave us maybe the best live solo performance ever recorded!

@@kailamay2278 - Yeah Kai with his easy smile, natural emotions and perfect singing I'd never guess that Bobby was nervous for this performance if I hadn't seen dozens of comments mentioning it. If you add "Andy Williams Show" to the search for this song they briefly joke about why Bobby gets to sing this song solo and at one point his voice and breathing seems slightly nervous. But like many athletes he must have controlled his nervous energy and channeled it into making his performance magical/angelic/and a gift to the world. Some hockey players who are nervous will have their best game ever, others will squeeze their stick too tight and put the puck on an opposing players stick who puts the winning goal past the nervous players goalie. I have Bobby's blue eyes but never really sang much since our grade 1 to 6 music teacher would get all the students into the gym and have us singing our hearts out for her. But Bobby's superb performance here inspired me to sing along and I don't do too bad if I do say so myself, except trying to match Bobby's beautiful high notes I fall flat lol

Your absolutely right about not loosing the harmonies. Boby Hatfields wide range was satisfactory to any knowledgable ear. He had a tendancy to get over powered from the booming voice of his partner. Not sure why reactors are affixed to his same two songs. He sang many more of equal or better. I guess because it's featured in a movie. This means more of the younger gen may be more familiar, as it seems most youth relate songs to movies. Something I find peculiar, I would suppose the newer generations need visual for music/ sound. Were back in the day we listen to sound/ music, and used our imaginations. Nice honest and educated reaction from someone who does sings. Try a reaction to the song .... "SEE THAT GIRL" Righteous Brothers, But this one is by his partner, Bill Medley.

This live performance stands out and is being circulated so widely because not only is it timeless, the way Bobby sings it, but this LIVE version showcases his amazing vocal range and control, without any gadgetry needed. And, "satisfactory" is a rather pale, anemic adjective when describing a voice like his.

@@gibsongirl2100 there wasn't much "gadgetry" in the 60, over dubbing/ layering some mixing. Today it's digital, it's perfect in sound. No one can sound bad, no mistakes, if there is it's digitally altered. There is nothing left for ad-libing or improvisation. I didn't realize there was a connoisseur of voice listing. He was no Domingo or Caruso.
@gibsongirl2100
@gibsongirl2100 3 жыл бұрын
@@wavelength7503 That was exactly my point; the reason his live performance was so impressive is because he did it without all the help that many of today's "singers" need to sound decent. As to your snarky remark about him being no "Domingo or Caruso", there's no need to compare. Bobby had an amazing range - something like a 4-octave range, I believe, and in his own music genre, was just as impressive. I enjoy opera - I prefer Pavarotti over Caruso, but I don't look down my nose at talented singers who don't happen to be opera stars as being merely, "satisfactory" on the talent scale. Who's the "connoisseur" here (not sure what a "voice listing" is, though)?
@wavelength7503
@wavelength7503 3 жыл бұрын
@@gibsongirl2100 Professor "Gadget" You deserve all the criticism and sarcasm. So you don't like snarky remarks, I guess I'll have to say, to bad. But you like to give them out. As for Pavarotti, it is a typical choice for pseudos to recognize. I figured someone like you would bring him up. At those levels of singers there is little difference among greats, just style and tone. You come of as trying to be the master of voice. You trying to make someone the pedistal of all voices. My comparison wasn't a comparison, because there isn't any. It was to educate you on other voices that are at whole other level in the music industry. That was my point. What is a "voice listener" you ask. One would think it was more apparent than using the term "gadget" for the music industry or the art form. You obviously don't play one instrument let alone 3. I'll explain the two words in question. "VOICE", is a sound that comes from the larynx.and exits the mouth. "LISTENER" is the person who is listing to that voice. "Voice listener" I would have stated it differently for someone as sophisticated in music as you try to prove . Especially using that music term" Gadget". I should have realized then, the music scholar that was listing. Just to inform you. In music there is sound, other than voice. Believe it or not there are people who study and make a living of sound.They call them, sound engineers. They LISTEN TO SOUND, not voices. I know for a fact that today's singers are as good, and in many cases better, from back in the day. My analysis in music and the technology wasn't about Musicians/ singers per say . It's about technology, mostly about the business aspect of it, increase profit/ meaning. It's eliminating everyone from engineers to Musicians, as well as what I already referred to. But like all art form through history, there will be other forms. As for the plus of technology anyone to day can become their own recording studio, and engineer. Your point was, you didn't like satisfactory for a Singer. Just because you like someone doesn't make him the best in the genre. I know the voice more than most. I still have my three original 33 1/3 albums by the R B. But I'm we'll aware there are people with his range, and beyond in the singing world. I'll make you aware, I'm not sure if you'll believe it. But there is also other singers from may other languages that are superior singers. Enjoy music, not the sound of your own head.

There is a beautiful love song that never used the word love in it, and it’s called “Beautiful Thing”. And here is the interesting part. It was written by a 12 year old about her sister. The version you should listen to is one that they used for a commercial that actually won commercial of the year in 2017. The commercial is called “The Story of Lucy” and its a Windex commercial. The young lady that wrote the song is Grace VanderWaal who won the popular talent show AGT in 2016 at the age of 12. This was one of the songs she did and she actually performed all original songs, the first and only time that had ever been done. This is also a song that will last the test of time.
