The Rights of Man is a well-known hornpipe widely played by fiddle players in England, Ireland and Scotland. In this fiddle tutorial I show two versions of the tune. Firstly the basic melody, with some discussion of the dotted rhythm, triplets and phrasing which are typical of hornpipes. Secondly a version with Irish fiddle ornamentation based on the playing of Fergal Scahill. This includes cuts, rolls, drones, extra triplets, and some chromatic notes. The Rights of Man sheet music used on this video is available as a free pdf to anyone who subscribes to the channel. (see below). There are plenty more hornpipes and other Irish fiddle tunes available on The Fiddle Channel.

Hello, I really enjoy your KZfaq posts and have learned many tunes and variations. Thank you! For most of my musical life, I have been a practitioner of American Old-Time music, Appalachian fiddle, styles. As a newcomer to IrishScottish traditional music, I have some questions about variations on triplets. Who is hoping you might be able to provide some insight into what are you here as a variation of triplets. A commonly hear this in many of the top tier players, such as Tommy Peoples. I will described the two main variations that I hear. The first, being a street forward, percussive triplet that can easily be identified as three quick notes. The second, being which sounds to be a triplet, but with a crunch. The notes on the second variation Are not clear but kind of scratchy. If you were able to shed any light on this topic, I would be appreciative.

Hi Bruce. Could you find a YT video of Tommy Peoples which includes the crunchy triplet so I can have a listen?

Hello Chris, Thanks for you quick reply. Of course, this is not Tommy Peoples, yet it illustrates the technique I inquired about, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b79mjdVhmJ_bnnk.html Best, Bruce

@@brucejacobs7328 Hi Bruce. I think what you're dealing with there is a treble or bowed triplet. Whereas a normal triplet is three different notes, a treble is the same note three times. But she plays them so short that it is more of a stutter or, as you say, a crunch. Probably the hardest of all ornaments to do. I have a video on this very topic, but mine are nowhere near as good as hers!
