Thanks Kris for another great review and comparison test. I have the ETron 55 Sportback , only for one month now, and I am a bit range ‘worried’ for longer travel. I live in eastern canada and the charge network is way behind Europe and Scandinavia!!! I will be mostly a short commuter so really not a big issue honestly, just for out of town travel will some care be needed for planning around charging. The DC charging is surprisingly quick, and that will be a godsend I’m sure. Love the comfort and Audi like manners of the vehicle, and I can ‘miss’ the combustion snorting exhaust sound only so much, and it was a painless transfer to the EV. Thanks for all your wonderfully done reviews!

Great video. I'm having trouble distinguishing between the 2 exterior wise. The Q4 just looks like a refreshed version of the E-55. Looks nearly the same size and everything.

Kris, awesome comparative review 👍, thanks for clearing a few things up, one I do agree with everything you stated, as a owner of the eTron 55 as well I truly feel no other EV in its class can touch the eTron 55 even with its lower range, the charging speed is so fast it truly makes up for its range on very long road trips, for daily local driving range is not an issue and it’s equal to other EV’s with a ton more range as you can charge it up over night every night if you need to .. As for the Q4 eTron I feel a little better about it however unfortunately for me interior material quality is very important, and In cabin noise is one of the most important, so the Q4 interior design is great, however for the cost better interior material should’ve been used with better in cabin noise level.. everything else about the Q4 etron seems perfect tho.. So if you would not have unlimited budget, do I feel it right you would pick a fully loaded id4 gtx over decently loaded q4 40 etron (which is also only rwd)?

Great review! You mentioned the seating x car height, the seats of the e-tron 55, including the backseat, are much higher than in the Q4. It's much more comfy for an adult to seat on. The Q4 is not among the worse in this matter at all, but I have never seen any car with a higher backseat than the big e-tron. I noticed it when installing child seats with support leg.

Great review! I really appreciate the ride quality of the “big e-tron” and the charging curve. Being able to top up from say, 70-100% in no time, while you stop anyway, makes up for much of that extra consumption. Driving in winter conditions is also great, with all that power and permanent AWD.

I was just recently contemplating whether to go with a brand new Q4 e-tron or a slightly used 55 E-tron, with the used E-tron being the more expensive option of the two. About a week ago I went to Germany to collect my "new" 55 E-tron, with the diamond stitched S-line interior, all the extra leather packages, camera mirrors, etc. etc. And I must say, so far, I'm really not regretting my choice. I also went and tried a Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace, but the overall feel and luxury of the E-tron is just in a league of it's own. I think the Q4 would have felt like too much of a compromise to me, since I really do like the feel of a well put together interior, and the E-tron just delivers in spades in that department. The car is just so luxurios feeling to drive, it's insane. It feels like a Bentley or a Rolls or something, it rides so smooth and is so quiet it's almost hard to believe sometimes. I can definitely see why you are happy with your E-tron as well!

Is the big e-tron the same size as the Q8?

I'm looking for a new car, I have three small children and the XC90 is one of the possibilities because of the space in the rear seats. however, I'm leaning towards buying an EV. but the problem is getting one with the space i need. you have tested many vehicles, which ones would you recommend?

just checked kris NHSR test of "e-tron 55" and Q4 "e-tron 40" and on highway the consumption is about 40% higher for the "e-tron 55"

What material is Q4 control arm? Aluminum or iron? AL is much stronger, lighter and more expensive.

I'm lead to believe if you get the 19inch wheels on the big etron the range is better. Also you highlighted an upgrade for the etron next year with better range. Definatelty worth considering the etron used compared to the q4. I may wait for the new upgrade next year and get the 55 used.

Consumer reports gave 1/5 ratings for e-tron for reliability and owner satisfaction. I was planning to buy but not so sure after reading consumer reports. Can anyone provide a honest feedback of this car on reliability

No, the Q4 Etron is more noisy on 20” than ID.4 on 21” with the same make and model of tires. Enyaq is a tad better than both though but had others tires, but it’s what you get with the car. All tested in Swedish magazines ReCharge and ViBilägare.

I'd get the E-tron 55 in the standard body style. Front boot, big rear boot, and a nicer interior. I'd go for the 20" wheels that help with the aero too.

The question is....brand new q4 eTron or used eTron55 with same price?

im looking at both right now. 2022 fat etron vs 2023 Q4 etron. The fat etron (2019-2022) looks much nicer but the 3 major issues of fat etron have me feeling hesitant. 1. Major battery recall Jan 2024. 2. Leaking sunroofs 3. Front & rear motors failing due to coolant leaks. The Q4 is too new to rate reliability.

Nice comparison, but it would have been better with the Q4 50, and maybe on the highway. I think the WLTP range of an E-tron 55 compared to the WLTP range of Q4 50 (about 40-50 km greater range of Q4) says a lot. E-tron 55´ charging speed will, as you say, greatly equalize the travel speed. Q4 is built on the same assembly line as VW ID4 by VW, so possibly there is something there regarding the build quality you mention?😳

Saw both in person recently. E-Tron has many fine touches on the inside, maybe too many buttons, screens and simple tasks often took one step too many. The Q4 on the other hand is a bit simpler but far below the quality and material use you see in other high end Audis. Both have crammed back seats while the Q4's truck is only big enough for a carry-on sized bag.

You forgot a important point. There is almost no room in the backseat in the e-tron but it have a bigger boot. But the Q4 have a ton of space in the backseat area but a smaller boot.

We were testing the E-Q4 yesterday and our personal conclusion is...that the interior isn't there were it should be for an Audi. Second minus is the trunk. Since we have a big dog, we are depended to space in the trunk. Long story short...we bought the E-Tron 55 😁 Greetings from an Audi Fanboy 😂

Even the new Q3 (with S line package) has a better interior than the Q4. No gaps at the dashboard/ behind the steering wheel or at the gear knob. It also has some hard plastics but they are more scratch free than the leather of the E-tron

Just drove the I.D.4 GTX last weekend. Almost killed myself over the acute boredom that car inflicted on me. Would NEVER consider such a car. Q4 seems a little nicer to look at, but I’m skeptical since it’s based on the VW.

The most disappointing EV test-drive I did was with Audi Q4 55 Quattro. Don't get me wrong, I am a big Audi fan boy. Maybe due to that I had the highest expectations and the car just did not deliver. The car itself looks very cool and nice; interior and exterior wise. The performance, stability and handling of the car just did not compare to the other cars I tested. It felt like an old peoples car. I never thought I'd complain about 6.5s acceleration speed. There were no fruck in the front for the charging cables, although the boot was good size. The biggest disappointment however was the Audi's infortainment system. It was just confusing and not at all well thought out. Some serious usability issues through and through. E.g. all the icons look the same, same size, same look and feel, same shading and with a glance you cannot tell them apart. Compared to simplistic and very functional infortainment system of Polestar 2, Audi's system felt like an old Ericsson mobile phone next latest Apple iPhone. Worlds apart. Although the car looks Audi, the motto : "Vorsprung durch Technic" was really not the case with this specimen. Dropped the car from EV shortlist.

An A4 is superior and cheaper and does 0 to 60 in 4.8. The Q5 is a better alternative if an Suv is required and it is fast too.

This was really hard to watch... It just seemed like you already have a car you like and you compared the bottom bottom tier of the audi q4 e-tron models... the 35, to an almost top of the line etron?....which isn't even being sold in the U.S.... That is not a very good comparison. It's like you compared an expensive steak made by experienced Michelin star chef to steak at the outback steak house... If you like your car then you like your car. With a Chip shortage... and the inability to test drive a lot of cars nowadays a unbiased opinion is really needed.

The audi Q4 etron looks very plastic - its rounded design and plastic type front makes it look bad - a step back for audi. The 55 etron design to the right is still very nice, even today holding up nicely from 2018 design wise.

Ioniq 5 beats both on charging speed, interior space and, of course, the looks!
