Rijeka is a Croatian port city located in the Kvarner Bay, in the northern Adriatic Sea. It is famous for serving as the gateway to the islands of Croatia. Korzo, the main promenade, is lined with buildings from the Habsburg era. Near this area stands the 19th-century Croatian National Theater Ivan pl. Zajc, whose ceiling displays paintings by Gustav Klimt. Perched on top of a hill, the Trsat Castle complex includes a religious sanctuary and offers panoramic views of the islands of Kvarner Bay.

Before world war was italian also the whole region: the name of this city was Fiume. 🇮🇹

No it has always been Croatian as was Trieste. During World War 2 Rijeka was divided into 2 by the river Rijeka and one part was occupied and ruled by Italians. The Croatians from the surrounding area were thrown into concentration camps by the italian regime. The surrounding geographical landscape contains the oldest Croatian dialect which is Čakavian. They still speak it at official and artistic functions. After the war Rijeka was handed back to the Croatians and Trieste was handed to the Italians. Within the city of Rijeka they speak the current Croatian official dialect.
