Rik Mayall was one of the best special effects on television. Just one person, on a small set, he could bring any story to vivid life, and make it seem grand and mad and unpredictable, just by being Rik. The minor animation effects sprinkled in are quaint by today's standard, but Rik's broad storytelling hasn't aged a day. We miss you, you minky, musky, sly old stoaty stoaty stoat!

Rik Mayall died in 2014 of a massive heart attack after a jog. Rik survived the quad accident and was placed in a medically induced coma due to swelling of the brain. It was rumored he experienced seizures until his death due to his head injury. Either way Mayall was a comedic genius and had the ability to be an even better dramatic actor given the chance. He has always facinated me being a victim of hcm cardiomyopathy. Always wondered if he had ever shown signs of the disease. His death was always odd to me. Not to mention his level of energy during his life. Well anywho r.i.p rik

Hi guys, this is easily the best capture I've seen so far and yet it's still got this odd muddy quality about it that I don't remember being part of the broadcast. I have a feeling that the commercial tape itself is the problem - but I'd LOVE to know more about your capture. Would you be willing to share some of your RAW capture with me? I'm currently on a quest to restore as much of this wonderful show as I can find. Thanks!

So, the whole show has been released on VHS in the UK and Australia, and I happened to have imported a release from Australia for its cool looking cover sleeve. I captured playback from a Panasonic VHS/Blu-ray combo player with a 'convenient HDMI splitter that removed copy protection', and the player used internal upscaling for 1080p output. I captured the video using a Elgato Game Capture HD, trimmed silence at the start and end of the vid, then uploaded it. The 'muddiness' you're probably talking about is how KZfaq compression works with VHS quality footage. You're never going to get anything sharper than the method I used, which itself was quite a intensive way to get a modern HD capture of a 25+ year old VHS tape. I've done research as for who currently owns the show, and I believe Endemol has it through one of its acquired subsidiaries Initial Film/TV and either doesn't know about it or just doesn't care enough to dig the original tapes out of their archive to make available for licensing. I even messaged one of the show's producers a few years ago and he doesn't know anything more than what I could find. I still have the original file, but I removed it from Google Drive as it got a fishy user request or something. If I get some time, I'll reply to your message again with a download link.

@@RetroDLC that make some sense. I'm imagining the player had a TBC built in too- it's pretty stable! I would love to see the un-KZfaq'd version though, you're right in that it is probably destroying it. I often upscale my 1080 videos in premiere to 4K before uploading because you get better 1080 videos on the other end bizarrely. Thank you for the reply! I had no idea there were vhs/blu-ray combos- what a trip!

@@Palooka37 I didn't know there were VHS blu ray combos ..not sure there's much that's worth the converting..what's interesting to Me tho is the redundancy these regulation bodies cause when adding that terrible copy protection that company invented all those years ago..the bast.....s..lol...I remember buying a amstrad 2 VHS combo and thinking lovely, I should be able to do some good copies with it...turned out it was absolute shite quality and u could get better with two generics connected via red white yellow leads (forgot what called) but the amstrad had copy protection on it so it.cost me near on 500 quid for a hunk of shit. Me and my brother figured out how to get round the early copy protection but the caveat was that when u were recording the playback was just snow and sound..yet when played back the copy it was perfect..not sure what we did.but later the copy protection that ran along sound recording of the actual video tape made it really hard to do anything easy. I'm talking 35yrs ago to 25yrs...another annoyance for me was I moved on to dvd recorders and had same bloody issue as that protection followed..I got a dvd player that had been all region chipped and also removed copy protection..but here's the problem now ...most of time I would record stuff and then the disc would have room left so I never finalised the disc as I'd wait until something fit on disc and then finalise it so subsequently I'd have bunch of dvds and the machine would die and because unfinalised I couldnt play them on over machines. I still have hundreds of disc full of obscure TV stuff that I can't play. I also kept the machines and they are in pile.in spare room around 15 of them..then I moved on to.hdd recorders and now I was in heaven. Again got.years of TV stuff only for machines to.die and again the HDD won't play on pc. I've now bought a HDD dock and hope they will work thru that but I have 3 machines they died and some awesome old TV from channels that no longer exist like paranormal TV etc..some real rarities ok them.

I have been searching sporadically every now and then for the past couple of years for a higher quality version of Grim Tales than what had already been uploaded to KZfaq. I am so glad I found this! Is there any way I could get the rest of the series? I'm hoping to share the joy of this show with my children one day (the oldest just turned 3). I would be very grateful if you could share it with me. Either way, keep up the good work, sir. This show deserves to be better-preserved and more widely-enjoyed.

43:11 this part always scared me as a kid. The fly seems so random and to this day i find it viscerally unpleasant to look at. Somewhat paradoxically, its also my favourite bit of animation in the show. I LOVE how weird and unsettling it is. I still don't know WHAT the fly is supposed to be though? I assume its connected to the purple frog story? Anyone know if I've missed a reference to something or is it genuinely random?
