@67maxfield sure, from my POV, which is cishet male, women put their bodies and potentially lives on the line when they enter into physically intimate relationships with men. A little known secret is that women can simply will themselves to turn off emotionally in a relationship that doesn't necessarily have anything wrong with it. Ttbomk, the songwriter (don't know whether it's just Jenny Lewis or a colab in Rilo Kiley or just someone else) is the only songwriter in all of songwriting history to have addressed that little known fact.

@@dwoski thank you and I’ve been fascinated by that dynamic since I experienced it and then had it validated by someone else saying it. Another famous woman. Unfortunately forget who. So yeah I didn’t recognize that’s what the lyric meant but now that you explain it I got it. Went over my head. Basically definitely happened to me and then I heard that person comment on it and it’s driven me crazy for so long. Cause from a my pov I’m pretty black and white, but then again I think everything can be boiled down to that. So would you say if a woman turned off her feelings for you it’s safe to say they never truly loved you right? As in being one’s soulmate or true love. Whatever that really means. But like I know she’s mine and I thought I was hers but that seemed to happen and so I always wonder but mostly just decided she never really loved me the same. Sorry i was rude before. Strange your explanation enlightened me and struck a chord cause I genuinely think about this dynamic often.

I'm not a native english speaker so I'm just realizing til now what I've been singing since my teenage years, I though it didn't mean much but that is actually great. There's this concept of love and romance, that one should be 'that godsend thing' saving its 'soulmate' from the 'utter shitty world'... but that's not necessarily love, one cannot be relegated to be only a 'bright side' or a mere 'reason' for the other to live, like for example this manic-pixie-dream-girl trope that doesn't allow that character to actually be its own whole individual. That is quite a relevant issue these days.

when I first heard this song I felt a wave of nostalgia and familiarity that I hadn’t expected. And I had to replay it a couple of times before I could start to identify what it was about this song that drew me in. But I finally figured that the chorus had a peculiarity about it that reminded me of the song DO RE MI by Nirvana. That it sounded so similarly that listening to this song that I’d never heard before that day triggered memories of laying in bed after an endless day of high school blasting nirvana until I’d fall asleep. That this song and Do Re Mi had interchangeable memories attached.
