Ring Alarm Pro is the new alarm system from Ring and it is the "PRO" version of the Ring Alarm. In this video, I'll show you the features and the differences between the Pro and the regular Ring alarm and does the built in Eero Router, Backup Internet and Local Recording using Ring Edge is worth the extra $200/year subscription fee?
I'll also show you the process and what to expect if you are planning to upgrade from the regular Ring Alarm and see if it is easy or difficult to upgrade and swap out your Ring Alarm base stations.

*Just to clarify and I haven't emphasized in the video - with the Ring Alarm Pro you will also need to replace your existing router. Ring recommends it to be the main router and not setup as an extender and it's features like the local recording and the backup internet will only work if it is setup as the main router. So, if you already have a good Wifi and network setup, the Alarm Pro will not be a good option for you and the regular Ring Alarm will.*

My question, I can just keep my ring alarm that I have and just pay $200 subscription starting in 2025? I have a CAT 5 cabling upstairs in the laundry room, so if I would get this ring alarm pro base, it would be the dedicated router but it would be stationed upstairs laundry room which to me is not a optimal area in my house.

Really appreciate your efforts. I watch your channel often. I'm hoping to find a review that will dive into the frequency strength. I have some extenders that tend to cut out. I want to know the first gen or second gen alarm and extenders and the other devices have stronger or weaker frequency strength. That kind of review would be very helpful. Thank you for all you do.

Definitely considering this to replace my "traditional" system. Based on the comments though I want to do some more research to make certain I don't need to make it the main router for all the features. Seems like it's possible. But it's also not the end of the world If I need to setup a new eero mesh network. It's just more cost as I need to get the wifi 6 extenders to cover my entire space properly.

Thanks so much for doing this. I have a couple of questions. First, assuming Ring is continuing to use AT&T for cellular service, placement of the base is critical for coverage for much of the country (me, too). My best spot for my existing Alarm base is not near my modem and it's totally impractical to run an ethernet cable across the house for that. I already have an Eero mesh system (the dual band version with ethernet ports, not the tri-band) and am wondering if I could "waste" one of my Eeros by moving it close enough to the base to connect them by ethernet cable? Of course I'd end up with two networks, one for Ring stuff and another for everything else as it is now? I hope this question makes sense. I'm trying to optimize my cellular/backup connection without rewiring my house. Surely Ring/Amazon will figure out a way to just use the Eero as another device in the mesh and not force it to be in a sub-optimal location in the house for cell coverage.

We are thinking of putting in a security system, 2 floodlight cameras (one front & one back of the house) and a doorbell camera. 1. Do I need contact sensor for all my doors and windows on the 1st floor? I heard that it was recommended. 2. How strong of an internet do I need? right now we have 300Mbps download from Xfinity. If I got the Ring Pro would that mean I should discontinue the Google mesh? Or could I just use a Ring 2nd gen system and hook it in with the Google Mesh 🤔. @LifeHackster: How fast does it switch over to Cellular after unplugging the coax or fiber optic cable from the modem (not unplugging the ethernent cable from the base station). in the regular base station, the switching will not happen unless an alarm is triggered. Note this is different from unplugging the ethernet from the base station because the station will not see the ethernet port losing low voltage power (i.e. it will still think it is online). instead, it would need to rely on pinging the ring server to see if it is still online, and that only happens when an alarm is triggered. this scenario is more realistic since burglars can cut your internet cable outside, leaving your modem and router running. I would appreciate it if you can update us on this. I can clarify more if what i just said is confusing. Thank you!

Yes and I now realized that this Pro is not for everybody. If you already have a good internet/WiFi setup, then this Pro is not going to work for you. It has to use the eero mesh network to work with the local recording and I don’t think you can use just the alarm and not the router. Also the alarm pro router needs to be the main router and not the extender. So, your choice would be the regular ring alarm.

Like putting your phone in airplane mode or turning off LTE when you are home and want to make sure your phone is just using wifi. So, when you are home or in town you could turn off LTE, and then just turn it on if the power goes out or you go out of town for a while. It works, but it is cumbersome. Ive been using that alternative after I switched from Frontpoint (excellent alarm system/monitoring but $50 a month) since Ring did not have a glass break sensor (until recently). What I discovered is that 1, Alexa Guard only detects glass breaking sounds (or people sounds) when Ring is set to Away mode, so at night when we are at home sleeping with Home mode on it would not detect a glass break. This is detrimental since I cannot arm the alarm to Away mode because that will also arm the “people sounds” in the Alexa guard and it is so sensitive that it will be triggered by even any of us snoring, and that results in an annoying alarm sound from the Echos throughout the house. 2., when Alexa guard detects glass breaking sounds, it does NOT trigger an alarm event on Ring, but rather sends you a push notification through the Alexa app for you to listen to it and determine if it is a glass breaking sound. Still then, if it is, you have to manually set off your Ring alarm so on top of the fact that it is delayed by the time you actually get to hear the sound, it still won’t integrate and automatically set the alarm off once you confirm the sound…by then burglars have already ransacked your place and left!

Seems kinda lame you have to have the protect pro plan to save to the local SD card. Also, since you already have an alarm you could have just brought the base and swapped it out. If you're grandfathered on the $10/month plan, might be worth it to keep that rather than upgrading to $20/month plan as the newer base adds a router but you already have one. There isn't really much reason to upgrade to this for most people, though the optional backup UPS is nice so the alarm doesn't go into low power mode during an outage. Of course the UPS only works with the Pro version (though you can just buy any UPS for the older alarm if you want). You can still get monitoring with the old alarm which is still on sale but you have to pay the $20 a month now if you are not grandfathered, it is not self monitoring option only on that model.

The base only is 250 bucks so I just bought the kit for 300 and I do need extra sensors. Also, I upgraded because of this channel and if I haven't, then there is no video and no conversation like what we are having now :) I agree with you that there is really no reason to upgrade if you already have the Ring alarm.

Same features as the Ring Protect Plus 1st Gent but with DOUBLE the price!! How can you make a video supporting this bait and switch? You make it looks like it is a great upgrade which it is not for grandfathered users.

How do you feel about Ring changing their monthly subscription to $20 a month instead of $10? I've been a protect pro subscriber for some time and was told I would be grandfathered in.. that is until they sent a letter about how we would be forced to upgrade the subscription to $20 starting the 1st of the 2025 year. What are your thoughts on this?

@LifeHackster In the video you said you were upgrading from a first generation base station to the Pro. But the non-pro base station actually had two generations which look identical. @@LifeHackster OK, because according to Ring, they told me that you cannot do the easy upgrade (where things are automatically backed up) from the first gen to the Pro. I thought a bit about the backup internet cuz for most homes, losing power = losing internet (because the ONT will also be down so whether or not router is up does not matter). But looking at the pro, it really has many drawbacks: I have to re-configure my entire wifi network I already setup with Deco X60 and wired backhaul through moca 2.0 devices & coax. Plus it forces me to lose the grandfathered 100/yr ring subscription. I guess I'll keep an eye for more years.
