Ringo stopped by our London cafe and was kind enough to answer some questions submitted by the fans on our Facebook page. Here he is talking about the late, great Marc Bolan.

I don't see anything wrong with being fickle-he was trying to find his niche. I can see why he went from being hippy folkie-that to was a phase-Bob Dylan started that & Marc must have admired it, when he was Mod he was very young & Mod was the thing-The Small Faces were a Mod band and then Steve Marriott went on to blues/rock. I don't get where the "Glam Rock" comes in-he wored brocade blazers with satin pants-it suited him-he would put a couple of sparkely spots on his face. Later on when he thought he was "competing" with David Bowie (Bowie wasn't competing) he amped up his androgynous look & wore flowing tops & quite a bit more makeup-that could be "Glam". One thing though about Marc & T Rex was his unique sound & flowy-dreamy vocals. He had a very soft voice but when he sang he could "punch" it up to a roar that seemed to come out of nowhere. He was just very unigue. After his The Slider & Electric Warrior album he was finding it harder to come up with good #1 hits and I think he was becoming desperate so he was desperatly trying to pull it all together. Didn't like when he took Gloria on board-screaming background noise did really have a place in any of his music. I have done a lot of digging on Marc & T Rex & found it all really interesting. One thing that puzzled me was he never introduced his band at start-up or after. I never heard him once introduce them.

Oh dear Patti . . . you can't have been at the right gigs "mi duc" - saw the band (in various guises) several times and Marc always introduced them - in a jokey kind of way - remember the "Miller being from Scotland" thing especially 🎸🎸🎸

@Rabbitpowder hey rabbitpowder, my thoughts here amount to mere musings based on what I read/read into the various comments. An industry where millions are at stake will no doubt have its fair share of skullduggery, plots and sub-plots.

T.REX were obviously really good... Great band... ''20th Century Boy'' is an example of a truly epic record... But one thing that never quite sat comfortably with me, was how Marc Bolan seemed to flit from fad to fad, with whatever was popular at the time. I mean he was a Mod, then changed to being a sort of Hippie folkie, interested in mysticism, then when Glam Rock came along (where he found success)... He was lightning quick to throw glitter onto his face, and his feet into platform boots. By the time of his death, at which point it's fair to say he's already peaked... He started dressing in ripped clothes, like the Punks did... It just makes you wonder if it was always about cashing in to a maximum audience, or if he was just a fickle? Like I say... Not putting him down, obviously he was talented...
@nigeh53269 жыл бұрын
Maybe he (Marc Bolan) was so determined he, WOULD be a star and he had the talent to get there no matter where music went. To him being a star and proving himself one was more important than any type of music.
@TheCooFrog8 жыл бұрын
+craig wells He was just using different music to convey his poetry, and he liked all of those types of music. In the earlier days with Tyrannosaurus he still had that punk attitude, even in the early T. Rex days with tracks like "Rip off" and "Telegram Sam" we hear a proto-punk sound. Ever step in his carrier he was getting closer to himself. The're many layers to some onions.

craig wells/ Marc Bolan was born to be a star.It definitely was all about fame and fortune to him.He knew he wanted to be a rock and roll star from a very early age and was willing to do anything to make it.That doesn't take away from how great he was.He did jump on the bandwagon into certain new types of music.But he was the godfather of glitter.He wasn't following any fade there.He invented it.Not only that but his two albums Electric Warrior and The Slider are two of the greatest LPs in the history of rock and roll.

well, music evolves and a band/musician don't stay in the same style throughout the years.. look at David Bowie, Queen, Elton John, even LedZep to some extent, they all have changed their style of music. Also, Marc is said to have invented Glam Rock:) Can't confirm it now, but that's what I remember. I think he really liked punk. Queen actually detested punk and DB also never went down that road, just as examples. I believe Marc was honest in what he did.

Oh Ringo... Why do you and Paul distort Beatle history? I mean just be truthful, it what it is, or what it was at the time...You know Back Off Boogaloo was about Paul. It wasn't about a monster, or a line from Marc Bolan, it was about Paul, ya know once you and Paul are gone, that's it, so please don't try to rewrite history.. Peace and Love!
@davidmathews25995 жыл бұрын
Well the song maybe about Paul but he got the back off boogaloo line from Marc one night when he was over Ringos house having dinner.

"he was the punk at the time, 'cos we were well established". But he needed watching didn't he? John Lennon knew that. So did he put you up to it to watch over him Ringo? What was really going through your head? I instinctively know how Marc Bolan might have felt. Except for cryptic clues in his songs Bolan kept a still tongue.. Had he survived the crash he could have been greater than Jesus and the Beatles combined. You knew this of course. It was one foggy night...

And another thought, here's Ringo mouthing off when he was actually the weakest link in his band, spouting off like a common housepainter (who had a win in the lottery) denigrading the Michaelangelo (main man) of the music industry.
