But that's the PR she demanded.

Yeah, he was still broken up with Yoko at this point. The session he talked about where he played with Paul is called the Toot and Snort sessions. You can probably find some recordings from it of John and Paul singing together. It's the only recording of them ever singing together in the 70s. I use to have it on my old ipod when I found it on Limewire back in the day lol.

Yoko seemed to be willing to do anything to keep him from his previous partners (The Beatles) and his former family (Julian and Cynthia). His year and a half with May Pang shows his true inclinations regarding all those people: no ill will, no arguments, no public letters and songs excoriating them all. And visits with them all, Paul, Cynthia, Julian ... Then, the moment he gets back with Yoko it's all gone again. May was a jewel he should have stayed with then. A very secure loving woman, like Cynthia, who only had John's best interests at heart. She even ended up friends with Cynthia til the end. Like George and Eric. Yoko was far too controlling to let John have anyone in his life from his past. Because on some level, she must have sensed she couldn't compare with any of the Beatles as his musical partner, nor with Cynthia as his truly loving wife. So she just installed John at the Dakota and kept them ALL away. Whatever she needed to do she did -- didn't pass along phone messages, didn't mail postcards, told John her "astrologer" told her Paul was only visiting him to rub his success in his face, kept John well supplied with drugs, sent him on "trips" around the world, took him away to Japan for months at a time -- but never England, never Liverpool, never a visit to his son, or his aunties, or sisters ... So this is maybe one of the last times we see the real John and how he naturally felt about things.

Not a slap at Ringo, IMO, just a sincere concern expressed. Ringo was the one in the group that led with his heart and was not afraid to show his love for each of them. Every team needs one of those, even if they are NOT appreciated.

I believe May Pang. Some people wonder how could Yoko get John back with hyposis. They believe that a person cannot be hypnotized against their own will. That's what I was thinking, too. I knew they had reconciled a bit. I remember that they talked about visiting a SNL show one night when SNL was joking about a Beatles reunion. Paul was in NYC with John and they were watching it together. They joked that they should head over. From how John was talking here, it really does sound like they had mostly recovered. I do think there was some problems or tension between George and John when John was killed, but I don't think it was friendship ending stuff. As some others have said, they would have gotten together for one of the big charity concerts that others were doing.

I think John and Paul had another fall out around 78-ish, but it was rather minor compared to what they were like in 69-71. I think had George and Paul's relationship (which even after Johns death seemed to never really ever be the same... apparently the Anthology opened up old wounds, and it was only on George's death bed they really made up) improved in the mid 70's, a 75-ish reunion would have very well happened.

I think all of them were. His debut album had all 4 members on it, probably because they wanted to make sure he'd be okay. John and Paul knew George had a big catalogue of songs he'd written so he'd be fine.

@@Ratelzwatel I think the point is not whether the music was terrible, the bigger point is that there were 2 close friends hanging out in a studio both doing what they loved best, If you listion to the out takes from there sessions over the years there was just a lot of throwing bits and pieces of what they were each working on, not polished. If you have ever had a falling out with a close friend you bring that back with baby steps, Paul dropping in the studio was a baby step.

He was. He really was. At the end of it, He was an intelligent, funny, fun loving soul with a love for music and art. It's a shame he also had to be the other person he was, Though.. There's no excusing some of the things he did, of course, But at the end of the day, John Lennon was a Human Being.

His 74 interviews and the BBC 80 interview (as Yoko seems to keep quiet in that one and let him do 99% of the talking) are probably his best, as you can tell he is happy (this period he was dating Mae Pang, and she made him go the extra effort to get antiquated with Julian again) and everything sounds good when it comes to his relationship with the other Beatles (I think him and George fall out not long after this though.... but George was in a pretty bad place for 73-75 in his personal life)

+Giancarlo Santiago Actually, I have heard from very reliable private sources that they DID secretly get back together to make another album sometime in the mid 70s. Each of the Beatles make a pact with each other that the album was not ever to be released until all of them had passed on. The album has been locked away in a vault with those specific instructions which have been legally authorized..Yawwwwn. And back to sleep I go, into my next dream.

There’s no excusing the abuse, obviously, but he did talk about how wrong he was and how he was ashamed of himself for it. That doesn’t make it better or forgiven, but it shows that he became more self-reflective and aware that he needed to change.

However when they were sitting (in a kitchen?) with guitars they seemed to be enjoying it. In my view I always thought Ringo "missed" being a Beatle a lot more than the others. And George even less than John and Paul. He always seemed to want to distance himself from being a Beatle more than the others. Not because he wasn't proud of their accomplishments, but because he wanted to move forward with his life and had many other things he wanted to do. And he did!

The Beatles last number 1 hit is just Paul and John as he was quite capable of playing the drums and lead guitar. If anyone was bitter it struck me it was George who had an inferiority complex and always sounded bitter in interviews after The Beatles. He even sued John and Paul for a larger share of royalties on songs they wrote which is why Paul didn't attend the Beatles induction into the RockN'Roll hall of fame. And also why he never made up with John. He'd blown mos of his millions on failed movies and in the end, it was Paul's idea for the anthology that made them all ultra-rich. Yet George was happy to rip off a poor black artist for "My Sweet Lord" John joked that maybe he thought God would let him get away with it. The irony of that case is that if he'd just offered some money he could have bought the right to the song and George's own lawyer did for himself. But he preferred to try and steal the song and moan about it and just pay rich white lawyers instead. Didn't see Paul pull that "crap."

I doubt it. Sounds like another PR revision by Yoko. John was still with May Pang and had put an offer in on a house in 1975. So, IF he was back with Yoko at this exact point then why isn't she there? Everyone well knows she would never agree to allow him to do an interview alone! (She wouldn't even let him do one George's Bangladesh concert alone!) No, for interviews, she sat right beside him to make sure he kept to the party line, and to chime in and redirect him, and make sure he didn't say anything nice about Paul or Cyn especially. So here we see the real John, for WHATEVER reason, sans his barnacle. And he's happily contemplating a Beatles reunion! Clearly the optimistic effects of being with May Pang for a year and a half hadn't worn off yet.

They made up in 1972 after the post-Beatles fighting. There were probably some up and downs after that, but they loved each other and were mostly fine. They used to hang out at John´s apartment in NYC, Paul and Linda even celebrated Christmas with John one year.

I like what you've written here. It's a nice realisation and you're right...it's great to appreciate being here now and seeing this unfold compared to reading about it in 100 years.

The thing is though, all four of them said that a reunion wouldn't and couldn't be as good as people would be expecting. Now a one off at something like Live Aid or some other "big" event or cause? Yes, that would have been AMAZING!! But anything with new material would be a risk that, most likely, would only disappoint. Would they have been able to come up with something better than Revolver in 1978 or 1991? Not impossible, but not likely! Though I guess if anyone could have, THEY could have...
