Ringo, Barbara Bach and John Matuszac sit down with John Davidson to promote their new movie Caveman in 1980. It's pretty apparent none of them are feeling any pain. John Davidson has a hell of time trying to conduct the interview. The intros and outros that John Davidson does were not normally part of the program. It appears they had to edit the interview to make it approprite for air. Karen Grassle (Caroline on Little House on the Prairie) and Andy Gibb were also guests that day and hung around for Ringo. And no, I don't have Andy's performance from earlier in the show. Part Two of Two. Click here for Part One: • Ringo Starr on the Joh...

I was at this show (15 years old) and I remember John stormed off the set and took about a hour to return and continue the interview with Ringo. I was surprised with John doing the intro parts when this aired, that never happened in front of the audience while We were there. This was My first time ever seeing a talk show taping and it was one to remember.

Thanks for sharing! Do you think Ringo realized how much he was annoying John or was he too drunk to even notice? I'm a huge Beatles fan but Ringo was just being plain obnoxious here!

They might have been short and needed to fill more time ... So he taped the intro and the piece at the end to stretch the segment and make it long enough. Other than John walking off the interview and coming back after an hour break ... Did they cut out a lot of the interview and parts never made it on the air? How much does this differ from what you saw live at the taping? When Ringo was answering questions seriously they took it as joking around ... all his answers to the childhood hospital questions were true answers ... He did pass the time in the hospitals knitting and making straw trays, they had activities directors that came in to give the children things to do and those were two of the activities they did regularly. ... And he did lose a lot of weight while in hospital. He was in a coma for awhile after his operation and slipped in and out of consciousness for quite a while after coming around ... He didn't eat food for a long time and had to get nourishment intravenously. And he was a camera buff and took cameras everywhere. I've worked in the interview industry, not in TV ... in newspapers and magazines. But interviewers can be a problem ... They go into interviews with an idea in their head of what the answers are going to be and how its going to go and if the person doesn't give them exactly the answers they are expecting and it doesn't play out like what they imagined they can't deal with it ... rather than really listening to the answers and letting the person being interviewed have some freedom and following where their answers take the interview they want to FORCE it to go the way they envisioned it going before the interview started. I really don't think John Davidson handled interviewing well ... I liked Davidson back in the day ... but he's not willing to be flexible and go with the answers Ringo is giving hes not listening to the answers just hearing the fact that they don't match with what he was expecting. That being said ... John may have gotten a lot of pressure from people behind the scenes to have interviews go a certain way based on the research they did and the questions they gave him and THAT may have created a lot of the problems during this interview that caused John to walk off the set.

@@jcjohnsong8570 Dick Cavett was the best. I think you're right about Davidson not being very good at interviews and having expectations from his guests. Ringo seemed tipsy and perhaps much too relaxed for Davidson but he wasn't trying to sabotage him. Ringo had thousands of people asking him questions over the years and The Beatles were well versed at not allowing themselves to be bullied or manipulated by the media.

Credit must go to Mark David Chapman for the change in Ringo's flippant persona. It was a reality check. Being as famous as a former Beatle had its drawbacks. Ringo started acting more serious and respectful toward others after the death of a friend like Lennon.

I actually think that John Davidson did a very good job here of managing the entire situation, he managed to have his cake and eat it too by putting in the interlude "we now would like to continue with the interview we recently did with Ringo Starr" and when he says Ringo Starr, he says it in the most sarcastic way possible..... An exceptional piece of history here caught on camera, I'm glad he sobered up but this is probably the funniest Ringo has ever been.... Great job John Davidson!!!

Richard Starkey.

If the future Sir Richard Starkey had passed away shortly after this interview, we would be saying, 'poor Ringo, he died so soon after this, and he was clearly already in trouble at the time this was filmed.' But somehow he has survived to this very day, despite being not only inebriated, but absolutely HAMMERED, during this interview. Barbara does not appear drunk - maybe she just hid it better - but equally does not appear all that bothered that her husband is wasted. And, get this, she actually PREFERS this type of man - a short, bearded alcoholic wearing plimsolls - to the Roger Moore type. She must have been drunk, too. x

Caveman didn’t do well at the box office. Ringo’s being drunk on this interview was talked about all over Hollywood but it was said that he was high. I know because in the 70s I went out to LA twice to break into that business. Ringos Reputation was ruined! I’m telling you the truth this is what did it! No one wanted to hire him. He had a failed movie and he had this drunken performance, which again, I tell you, they said that he was on drugs. And no one wanted to hire him. Why would you want to hire somebody who’s going to come on the set and wreck your movie, and put you behind schedule, because they’re intoxicated? That’s how they think. And they’re right. But, when Ringo was working on records and television shows and movies he wasn’t high. Or he wasn’t drunk. But he certainly was here and that was a huge mistake. It cost him his movie career. The competitor for this show was Mike Douglas, and it is a long story, but it is Hollywood history. Mike Douglas worked for metro media for years they ended his show and started a show with John Davidson and it was said Mike was fired and John Davidson was hired. So this showed of John Davidson‘s, had a stigma on it from the beginning. I don’t care for John Davidson but the guy was put in a really bad spot. He didn’t know that it was going to be interpreted as he is taking over for Mike Douglas and Mike Douglas Being fired. Here’s what happen with the Ringo, he was in a deep depression he found the second love of his life, thank God, but no one would hire him.He moved out to Los Angeles because he wanted to not only make records, but he wanted to be in films. In fact, he wanted to be in films more than he wanted to make records at this point. He was growing tired of making albums. Capital records was out on the West Coast of course in Los Angeles, so they were more than happy to have him out there because he was making a lot of money for them. He was the biggest selling Beatle after the Beatles broke up! Ringo went on the Mike Douglas show sober, he was the only guest on the show! Unfortunately Mike Douglas‘s ratings were in the toilet. And the show was extremely low budget: it was Mike Douglas, two chairs, and a black backdrop! If you know anything about TV production you know that’s even worse than cable TV! Merv Griffin, who had the tops and the ratings, wouldn’t have him, so Mike Douglas was the best that Ringo could do. He was very serious and very sober during that interview. However, it didn’t save his career; all people remembered was the mess that he made out of this show. It’s a good thing Ringo got off the drugs and alcohol! Today, he is the healthiest rock star ever. The man is 80 years old. His mind is sharp. And toward the end of his concerts he actually does a whole lot of jumping jacks! Honest!

What attracted you to Ringo Starr??........... I wonder if it’s anything to do with the $10000000 he has in the bank?

Ringo is a pretty boring character.

I guess hairy, oily, greasy, stinky, drunk, beardy, smoky men were Barbara's type. There is NO accounting for taste. Sad that Ringo was actually a good looking guy in 1964, I loved his eyes like blue stars and big pillow lips that I imagined tasted like honey (but probably tasted like booze and tobacco in reality). He just went downhill from the late 60's onward though.

\\I wish the interviewer had asked 'Are you embarrassed to be a boring drunk who alone thinks he's funny, and do you realise you're only here because you got lucky with two musical geniuses...'.

Ringo's drinking days.. He and Barbara checked into rehab. . not long after and turned his life around for the better.. according to published reports.

They checked into rehab eight years after this. I don't know what Barbara was thinking when she married drunk Ringo. Great that he became sober later on, but she had no way of knowing that he would change.
