Several years ago, when I heard that Amazon was adapting Tolkien's work, I dreamt of a Silmarillion series. Now, I honestly hope and pray they never do it.

Sales of Tolkien increased by 1000% after LOTR. Jackson's formula - honor Tolkien, follow the lore, and don't insert your own politics - clearly worked. Amazon's formula - contradict the lore, insert modern identity politics, and delete all negative reviews - has utterly failed.

Ya know that Ice Troll had a family. He had lived in that cave with his family for over 80 years when he found some elves creeping around his house unannounced in the middle of an ice storm, stealing his stuff.

Its so, so ironic that Simon, Tolkien's grandson, is a weak man who threw his grandfather's work to ruin when Tolkien was contemplating a follow up to Lord of the Rings where Aragorn's grandson leads Gondor to decline.

"It felt only natural that it should look like the real world." It's a place where giant spiders eat trees that are the Sun, where singing makes worlds, where wizards are real and elephants are a hundred feet tall and forests eat armies and people with the right ear shape live for ten thousand years and starlight goes in a bottle and living creatures can be on fire without dying. In a word.....huh??

More excited for the reviews of this series than the release itself

I loved when Galadriel climbed ice rock, and said: "I'm too old for this shit". Pure cinematographic gem.

I hope Amazon releases this series asap. Not because I'd be dumb enough to watch it (or pay for Prime) but because the videos on youtube roasting it will be orders of magnitude more fun to watch.

Amazon getting the rights to the Silmarillion is honestly terrifying, I really don't wish to see another of Tolkien's great works defiled.

Cate Blanchett was incredible and truly iconic as Galadriel. The opening narration in Fellowship of the rings still sends a chill, it is pitch perfect and sets to tone straight away. And when the gang meet her in person she is wise, beautiful, powerful and for a split second terrifying all in a couple of minutes of screen time. What an amazing performance. That trilogy of movies is like the concorde plane or bugatti veyron of film and human achievement of how something can be timeless and truly great.

I literally spent thousands of euros purchasing concert tickets to live orchestra cinema shows in several countries across Europe, purchasing paintings and audiobooks of LOTR, and yet, I haven't seen a single minute of this amazon shitshow. I'm proud of myself.

My favorite part in the Silmarillion was when ambiguously diverse Sauron handed the one ring to purple haired female sauron (fem-ron) while she scissored with Galadriel as Celeborn watched in the corner with a leash around his neck; and said "the one ring. it's absolutely perfect" to which femron replied "It will be when it fits a woman"; and then Celeborn stood up and applauded with tears streaming down his face.

I can't wait for the scene where Galadriel says "Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho."

Can't wait to see Morgoth in his yellow boots and blue jacket, going around singing "Ring a ding dillio" while corrupting elves into orcs and doing evil.... Rhyming all through it about the beauty of the river woman's daughter, Ungoliant.

If anyone hasn’t figured it out yet. They aren’t actually trying to make a good show or tell a good story. They could care less. They are activists and their goal is to take beloved masculine franchises and destroy them. The latest show for this to happen to was true detective season 4. I can’t even begin to tell you.. they made sure to tie it into season 1 in an attempt to ruin season 1 because that was the most successful season that feminists hated. They know that they will still make enough money to continue the process because people who loved the books, previous movies, previous seasons will still tune in with hope. We should essentially all boycott watching any new shows and have a small group of people watch and decide whether it is woke garbage or not.

"The Rings of Power" is the TV equivalent of that infamous Jesus fresco botch-up in Spain. Just like that lady, who enthusiastically but cluelessly turned a revered Jesus painting into a laughable blob, the creators of this show have desecrated Tolkien's legacy. With a blend of overzealous cluelessness and artistic butchery, they've reduced a revered saga to a mockery, proving that some masterpieces should be off-limits to those who can't differentiate between a paintbrush and a sledgehammer.

This is like if they made a prequel to Harry Potter And we learned Professor MacGonagall was actually an assassin in her youth who had a fling with Hitler.

What they’ve done to Tolkien’s life work genuinely hurts my heart. This series is completely devoid of any sort of moral themes that were essential to his storytelling. To see it dumbed down to this nonsense pandering is a slap in the face to both J.R.R. and Christopher.

Something you forgot to mention about your watching of Return of the King.. A woman defeated the big bad on the Pelennor Fields and it wasn't cringe. It's an epic moment and the whole story didn't have to be written around it for it to happen

It's a Mythical Fantasy world that has NOTHING to do with the world we live in! It's an epic tale of an ENTIRELY made-up world. I showed my 7 and 6 year olds LOTR this past Christmas. They loved it. The 7 year old ADORES the Hobbit and has listened to the Andy Serkis audiobook at least 10 times. His reaction to the opening when Gollum finds the ring and my son realized the implications was absolutely priceless. I will cherish it for years.

Having Simon Tolkien involved is about as reassuring as having Rod Roddenberry on Bad Reboot Star Trek.

Okay, here's what they need to do. Unveil a backstory where Gandalf and Sauron are both gay and they used to date back in Valinor, but Gandalf forgot when his memory got blocked and that's why Sauron is so mad. Then, come up with some sort of completely original, totally-not-a-copy-of-Star-Wars, explanation of why the Elves are magical, maybe some kind of microscopic particle called, I don't know, perhaps "mithril-chlorians". And then reveal that Galadriel has the highest mithril-chlorian count in history. That would be such an amazing story!

That clip of Peter Jackson explaining the importance of professor tolkein, & the key themes of the lord of the rings. All of that would fly right over the head of the activists at Amazon. They don't even understand what they hate.

4chan can be hit or miss with their leaks, but when they hit it's usually spot on. The Tolkien scholar describing these plot points as "garbage fan theory" really hits the mark for Rings of Power perfectly. That makes it completely believable.

Finishing a show without the showrunners have to be a strong indicator of how easily their job can be done by someone elses position....

The big problem with a second season of a failed first season is that anybody who didn't watch it gave up on the first will not be there for the second. How do they think this will make money??

They angered me in the first episode when they didn't even mention that Ungoliant was the one who drained the trees. But, I thought to myself, "Stick with it. Maybe it gets better. They don't have the rights to some of the material." Then, I keep saying to myself, "Where the hell is Celeborn? Where are their children?" I finally tapped out when they had the episode I like to call, "They took our jobs!" You know the one. Where there's almost a riot in the market. Because there's exactly one elf on the whole island. *One* elf.

Celeborn presumed dead? Sauron inpersonating Celeborn so he can be with Galadriel again? Real Celeborn finally returing just when fake Celeborn and Galadriel are rekindling their realationship? Did Amazon secretly hired writers from Days Of Our Lives?😉

I believe the whole point of making the series so badly is to keep people from ever wanting to look at the source material. These folks detest goodness, truth and beauty. They don't mind looking incompetent as long as it accomplishes the above purpose.

If they now have the Silmarillion- then they no longer have a single excuse to not film it as it was written by Tolkien!!!!!

So two things: 1) Tolkien despised allegory and said (and wrote) so several times, if I am not mistaken there is even a FILMED interview where he says as much; 2) Is she implying that in the 20th century there were wizards and various races of humanoids and monsters and magic? That phrase alone is a huge indicator of the quality, or lack thereof, of the people running this show. I have to admit: to have missed so spectacularly is in itself quite an accomplishment. Bonkers. I genuinely hope it fails and gets cancelled because it really is terrible.

Professor Tolkien was very specific on why there is no clear and concise origin to Tom Bombadil and Goldberry: Not everything gets a neatly wrapped explanation. The world is full of mystery, both good and evil, as the origin of Ungoliant is vague as well. He is allowing the readers to use their imagination. Professor Tolkien was also VERY Catholic. When something does not have a clear answer in Catholicism, you take it on faith, as a Divine Mystery. In this case: Only Eru knows what Tom, Goldberry, and Ungoliant really are.

if they wanted to they could have got the rights to the tale of Beren and Luthien, its a slam dunk because it's a story of an OP elf chick saving her bumbling human boyfriend multiple times, defeating Sauron in a sing-off (canonically accurate) and riding a giant dog as a horse. Also there's a part where she transforms into a vampire and her boyfriend into a werewolf so you get to cover that fan base as well.. not sure how they somehow managed to miss that.

Of course, that would make him a futurist, as well. Truly a man of great talent! The fact is, outside of the US and some international metropolises, most of the World has very limited diversity. In China, most people are used to almost always being surrounded exclusively by Chinese people, of the local ethnicity. Similar for most of the rest of Asia, most of Africa, and even most of Europe. Even where there's significant immigration, most immigrants settle in the cities. Quite simply, what the World truly looks like, to the vast majority of its inhabitants, is nothing like the inside of a Hollywood Starbucks. When they sit down to see a show based on European mythology, they expect to see people looking like Europeans. If anything, they'll be more disappointed than European Tolkien fans; after all, I can just step outside and see as many palefaces as I can handle. In my case, the disappointment would be greater if I sat down to watch a show based on Xhosa mythology, and it was crawling with white, Asian, Hispanic, and other non-Xhosa looking characters. Now, why don't Hollywood make itself useful for a change, and make a show based on African, Asian, or other non-European mythology and fantasy. I know for a damn fact that it exists, and I want it! Keep it free of diversity, and don't put a gay chick in it, dammit!

I refuse to believe that Tolkien, a staunch Catholic who resisted the changes of the Mass after 1970, until the day he died, would be very thrilled to see what his Lore has become, with Amazon.

This is all genuinely depressing. All of the pieces are there. The greatest piece of world building literature probably ever written, a billion dollar budget and the brand recognition to be able to pull just about any actor who’s actually serious about their craft and yet the idea of a second season is incapable of manifesting any thoughts but disaster for what’s to come. It is not only pathetic it is actually painful that they are incapable of doing anything right. You could make a season of television with a single bite sized chunk of Tolkien’s world I just don’t have words to describe how vitriolic these people are because they literally cannot be dumb enough to be ignorant so my only conclusion is that their actions are sinisterly intentional

I dunno, I could kind of enjoy a Season 2 that plays as a sitcom where Sauron keeps donning increasingly elaborate disguises to try to sneak into Eregion, Count Olaf-style.

I’m looking forward to seeing Galadriel crush the Terminator after conceiving John Connor with Celeborn/Sauron.

It's unbelievable these hacks were given a billion dollars to shred when it was *obvious* from get-go they were going to fail. With the lack of talent, terrible attitude towards the fans, bad writing, crappy costumes and complete contempt towards the source material, what did they expect was going to happen?
