A 100% walkthrough of the Windows PC version of LEGO Rock Raiders, a 1999 mining-themed real-time strategy game based on the LEGO theme of the same name. This walkthrough covers all 8 tutorials and all 25 levels in the game.
In total, 475 energy crystals were collected, and 9 lost Rock Raiders were found.
I didn't bother trying to get scores of 100% on any missions, as doing so is extremely hard for most and completely impossible for some (Run The Gauntlet in particular requires collecting 40 crystals for its score, but you can't collect any, meaning it's impossible to get a score above 50%). This does mean that the best ending can't ever be seen legitimately, as it requires a score of 100% on every mission.
I did not record this in one sitting, and it crashed a number of times on harder levels. I ended up starting a new recording at the end of each mission briefing, and stitched the best takes together so that the longplay appeared seamless.
Please excuse the failed Run the Gauntlet take, I wanted to show an alternate route that involved a Tunnel Scout, but it selected the new Rock Raider that it had generated as the Cargo Carrier pilot as my character, meaning they could not pilot a flying vehicle.
The game has been slightly modified to fix two bugs: one where using Sonic Blasters would crash the game, and another where firing laser beams drains all energy crystals instantly. No other modifications were made.
Played on Windows 7 with an AMD Radeon HD 7500. The game was run in 16-bit color mode, and mode selection set to Direct3D HAL, Window. The -fvf parameter was used to create a smoother fog effect in eye view. Recorded with Fraps to lock the framerate to 60 fps (in Window mode the framerate can go very high, which causes AI and crash issues).
Recorded at 640x480 resolution, 60fps. This video has been upscaled to 720p to improve its quality and so it can run at 60fps.

If you've come here to ask for help getting this game to run, please give some information about your computer, like what OS you're running and what CPU and GPU you have etc, as well as what you've tried so far and what the results were. I'd love to help, but I can't really if you don't give me more info than just "it doesn't work". I can say that dgVoodoo is a pretty common blanket fix for graphics related issues, just make sure it's the latest version (2.82.1 as of this comment) since some LRR-related sites have downloads for old versions with major compatibility issues with this game. I also recommend OpenLRR, which fixes a lot of crash bugs and adds various adjustments and cheats you can use.

8:48:30 That mission was the bane of my existence. I was having hoards of Slimy Slugs and Rock Monsters attacking my base and sucking it dry of my crystals. but I found a way around this different from others. instead of gathering as many crystals as I could while preparing defenses, I gathered them using the Transport Truck and made a big pile in the center of my base. that way I still had the needed crystals, but wasn't attracting any monsters. I kept my crystal count in the Power Station below 10, only taking from the pile and increasing it when I needed new buildings and vehicles. finally when 50+ crystals were found, I quickly gathered up my pile and threw them into the Power Startion. I had almost 10 Rock Monsters and several Slimy Slugs appear at the same time. it was like a scene from Starship Troopers with them terrorizing my Raiders. but within 4 minutes, I reached my goal and quickly teleported out. it was the most fun I had with the level. Lol

I remember playing this version of this game when I was a kid. It was included in a Lego PC game pack called "Kids Craze: Lego" but I also have a separate copy of this game, which includes the full-length versions of all the gameplay music. I also remember playing through the tutorials. Plus, I completed this game two years ago and it was awesome! I also have the PlayStation 1 version. Thanks for making this incredibly long but awesome walkthrough!

Funny that the gameplay tracks would have to be shortened for a compilation disc... that makes it sound like this game was still using CD-audio tracks in 1999. And if they could even include audio tracks for this game on the compilation at all, would make it seem like the other games on there were using some other kinds of playback. In fact, I think even other lego titles from that year, like Racers, were already streaming music from hard drive-- and I know most other games had moved on to that. I guess some developers were still using it, though.

This was recorded on Windows 7 with an AMD Radeon, at the time I couldn't get it working on Windows 10. You can run it on Win10 easier with a program called dgVoodoo dege.freeweb.hu/ which should work perfectly as of 2.79.3. Put dgVoodooCpl.exe, dgVoodoo.conf, and the DLLs from the MS folder into the same folder as LegoRR.exe. Currently I use an nVidia GPU and it runs ok without dgVoodoo in Direct3D HAL Window mode, though the framerate is kinda low sometimes. This is why I always ask what GPU people have, because how the game works seems to vary between AMD and nVidia (and Intel where it just refuses to work with Direct3D). If you're looking for this game, you can download a pre-installed version here: archive.org/details/LEGORockRaiders-gamefiles-Eng Additionally, there's an unofficial remake called Manic Miners. It's still unfinished, but what it does have honestly vastly improves on the original game. Download here: baraklava.itch.io/manic-miners

I'll run it as admin, the prompt saying "allow this to make changes to your computer?" pops up (which I say yes to, cuz if you don't you can't do anything lol), but when I select yes, nothing happens. I get the loading circle next to my mouse cursor like it's trying, but it doesn't pop up. I changed all the compatibility settings, which changed little. The desktop would switch to square mode briefly before reverting back, with no game loading. I have windows 10. I've read through other comments that make me fear I'm SOL. But I did see a comment regarding...emulators, was it? Someone mentioned that. I don't know anything about it. As for OS and GPU drivers, I won't lie, I know very little about computers. But if you've got the time, I've got the patience, and I'd be able to help you help me lol

Very helpful - I could never get past Breath of Fresh Air as a child and wondered whether I was just too dumb or the game was obtuse. Now I see i just had no idea how games worked..

This brings back memories. This game was great :D my main memory is the theme music and the slightly high pitched voice saying "Hard Rock" or "Dirt" rather enthusiastically... At least I think it was this game :D

I was throwing out some of my old school stuff recently and came across sketches I must have done in an art class of different things from Rock Raiders like the Chrome Crusher from when I was a kid about 20 years ago now. It was a real throwback.

I was late to playing this game because I was a wimp at the time, put off from challenge and threat in a video game. I eventually grew a pair after getting into console gaming, and despite a number of flaws and low expectations upon realizing it was developed by Data Design Interactive, I actually grew to like it. I'm also glad that it's gotten a community made remake that improves upon many things I didn't like about the original. It even has a new tutorial that doesn't treat you like a idiot, while at the same time helps you be more familiar with the gameplay and teaches you things the original didn't, while not feeling as drawn out and boring.

I remember playing this game as a non-English speaking kid. I was trying so hard back then to figure out what i supposed to do in the game but since i couldn't understand the language, i was always ending up confused. Hell, now from a 25 year old's perspective, this still doesn't seem like an easy game to play as a child. Nostalgia hit me hard man.

Today I completed the game, which I wasnt able to do when I was younger. Basically I have never built any buildings higher than the air station, almost everytime teleported the small transporter, and defend the base using the lasers and alert mode. In case of slugs attack I was simply turning the power on, and letting the folks deal witht the slugs, similiar stuff with monsters. I did mining mostly on FPP with unarmed rock raider, and let the transporter collect crystals. Sometimes I was turning the ore collecting off, or balancing with priorities. And on the smaller maps with lots of bedrock I tend to enforce the walls, so that I dont have to constantly deal with monsters. Im feeling a little bit down that it was so short, and I couldnt beat it earlier. Thanks for the tutorial on how to deal with slugs (I was trying to kill them with laser beams or sonic gens)

Can’t believe how many hours I spent playing this 20 years ago. This was such a fun and well-designed game. Had reasonable increases in difficulty the further you got. Enough tools in the sandbox to try different things. Absolutely hilarious sound effects, with the famous Lego videogame quality of not saying words, and instead saying grunts, yells, screams, groans. The British voice actors delivering lines in an also pretty hilarious way like “Dirt!” “An energy crystal has been found.” “A landslide has occurred” “Large mobile laser cutter” My only issue with the game was that playing on 1x speed was a bit tedious, but everytime I changed the setting to 2x speed, it would only last until something happened like a landslide occurring or a monster appearing. Which happened like every 7 seconds.

I like how they instantly teleport everything as soon as their objective is complete. "fuck the 100000 crystals in that cavern, we have just barely enough!". Reminds me of the video here "When RPG quests don't require you to save everyone" from goat-on-a-stick.

pretty much, that seems to be the most similar game to it. I'd call it baby's first RTS, which is probably part of its popularity since it's a lot more simple and easy to get into than some rts games (still one of the most complicated Lego games)
