It was absolutely insane just how big of a difference the two teams were on the night. It wasn't reflected in the scorelines so much but United were utterly and nearly entirely dominated in those two matches.

I think United didnt know how to play against that Barcelona team....they tried to go toe to toe with them....the better tactic would have been to sit deep soak pressure and hit them on the counter attack and at set pieces( 2 aspects of the game United always was very good at like most English teams)... The problem is Barcelona scored early on in both those finals, so the whole sit deep tactic didnt work very long.... But as amazing as they were they had chinks in their armor, Inter Milan in 2010 did a job on them...of course it was a 2 legged tie so slightly different approach.But Inter did go at them in the first leg and rightfully beat them even if there was an off side goal.Chelsea in 2012 and Bayern in 2013 also did the same but they were fading by that point, after 2011 they were never quite the same....

And in 08-09 and 10-11, it might not have worked anyway because the Barca teams of those seasons played with fast players who passed fast and played with urgency. In fact, in each season Barca won the UCL going back to 09, Barca played with fast players who didn't just pass and pass and pass (like in the seasons where they don't do so well).

That Barca team just toyed with them when they were at their peak.Rio was not at his peak playing for the England team, they were average compared to Brazil or Germany in 2002. That's the difference, basically you are at your highest level and someone comes and destroys you. They were present in 3 finals in 4 years so they were very very good. But that Barca team was unplayable, best team in the history by far.
