The main criticism of Southgate before was that he was too loyal to regulars and wasn't picking players on form - he's ripped that up and picked all the players who finished the season strongly. He needs props for that.

He's still doing it wrong because it was the type of players he was picking before that didn't make sense. Southgate wanted an excuse to not pick Jack because he doesn't like him and his drunken antics and instead if saying that and telling the truth he pretends its because he's not had a good season. When jack has played this season he has had a big impact and played well. Basically he was picking maguire and Calvin Phillips when they were not playing and OUT OF FORM. One rule for 1 and another for his favorites.

Jack needs to leave Man City because last season he very rarely played, he ain't getting regular football and he needs regular football to play at his BEST ......... SIMPLE! This is a big reason WHY he aint in the ENGLAND squad - why put Grealish in front of say Bowen when Bowen is doing it in the premier League week in week out when Grealish AIN'T even getting a start

I would've taken grealish and Marcus to be honest. Jack's not just a decent threat going forward, he's great at getting in opponents heads. Winding them up, taking them off their gameplan. Marcus, he's an enigma at the moment. The talent is there. Both could be vital in the later rounds against the top teams. I've got a feeling we'll be coming home earlyish.

Grealish is not even close to being a threat, hes awful, just look at the numbers. So easy to look good playing for City and he manages to make it look extremely difficult. So the only reason would be to wind opponents off, but that job could be done by 30-40% of the population so very weak argument you made there dumb mate

@@jhaych I wouldn't take him EVEN if he was 110% fit! Maguire has only had 1 good season and that was in a Leicester shirt, that also got him a move to Man Utd and ever since he has been TOILET. @@Lexington125 Foden is a super sub in a team that's not Man City where he's surrounded by 4-5 players that are better than him and will carry him. When it's his job to carry a game alone he's simply not good enough. The front 6 should have realistically been: Rice, Mainoo, Bellingham, Rashford, Kane, Saka.

After this evening’s spectacle… good grief. Not at all confident but hopeful that change of mindset turns into gold. England always feels (to a fan from Canada) entitled to win just by showing up. Leaving out so much international experience (beyond the U21) is troubling. But people complain that he doesn’t put players in better form in the lineup. It’s almost like he can’t win no matter what he does 🤔

My England Starting XI Pickford Trent - Stones - Guehi - Trippier Rice - Mainoo Saka - Bellingham - Eze Kane Shaw starts on the left if he’s fit. Foden is exceptional but I’ll rather start Bellingham in the middle just for the defensive aspect he brings to the team.

What does Mainoo bring to the team???? The only reason to play a pivot, is to have someone looking after the ball deep. Mainoo doesn't do that. If you're playing a pivot, just to have more legs/protection in front of the defence, drop Bellingham into 8 and play Foden in the 10. Yes Bellingham is better in a free role further forward, when he has Kroos/Modric behind him and Vini Jr/Rodrygo in front, but he doesnt have that at England. Bellingham would be more effective for England at 8, like he was for Dortmund/Birmingham.

That literally doesn;'t make sense. Shaw is a left footed Full back so of the 3 you mentioned not going they aren't full backs so not comparable. Grealish, Rashford wingers and Bramthwaite CB. So therefore not in competition with Shaw. Are you this thick in real life.

@@declanshanahan3888since you decided to be insulting , I’ll do the same as I explain , shaw is injured and hasn’t played since feb , there’s no way he will be ready to play in knock outs of euros and even if he’s the only LB , he won’t be at any capable level / your mother should have accepted payments in condoms , now pace is important and Gordon os the only pace option to come on as sub but he’s too injury prone so Rashford is needed you whose dad could be any one of 100 diseases drunkards and Grealish offers something different than a Toney who hasn’t scored in 4 Months

I truly think Saka wins pott if he plays LW. Let him run and deliver on his strong side and he will be amazing. His deliveries this year were amazing. Also he has developed his right foot so much that you just don't know where he's going and I think them forcing to cut and shoot instead of go baseline and cross will be way more effective for England. Foden in the middle Cole out right. Eze supersub along with other I think England wins it

Not surprised by any of these. Maguire injured, so that was expected. The rest have not been good enough. Rashford is the bigger surprise, best wide player England has. But again has had a bad season.

England will have a hard time getting out the group stage and will be home early......This squad is unbalanced with no strength against physical opposition and reminds me of tippy tappy crab football of yester year. The free kick and corner big men who get a fair amount of our goals seems lacking.....Hopefully I'm wrong but I have been following the lions for over 50 years and it looks grim.

A seagull in a waistcoat comes to mind- why not take Maddison/ Grealish who create chances- midfield is weak.. Trent should play midfield with foden / rice & Bellingham and two upfront - But seagull will be fired as soon as they land Bach three weeks time 😮

@@Lexington125 jude and foden centrally. Rice sitting in the 6. In possession stones joins rice to make it a double pivot. A box of stones rice and further forward jude and foden. And then out of possession, jude tucks in slightly back with rice. And then the wide men tuck in.

Foden started at 10 vs Iceland and did nothing. I don’t think he should start. He shouldn’t replace Saka on the right, Jude in the middle and Gordon on the left was actually decent. Foden and Palmer won’t start.

@@NorthLondonForeverCOYG Kane had a poor game against Iceland up front should we bench him? This logic is poor. Foden has to play 10 it's not even a discussion for me. Its his best position and he is one of the key players for us. Therefore he has to play centrally. He has played there pretty much all season for city. One bad game doesnt mean he shouldn't play there. He's not as effective on the flanks as he is centrally in my opinion.
