Thanks for sharing a very informative "how to" on using acetylene torch tanks. It has been over 2 yrs. since I was able to try to use my tanks. I have done lots of silver smithing in the past and I was a bit nervous since I hadn't used them in a while. Your step by step video gave what I needed to go turn on my tanks and viola it all went smoothly!

Thanks for the great, comprehensive video!! Could you please explain why the system doesn’t need a flashback arrestor?
@RioGrande1944
@RioGrande1944 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! The Smith SilverSmith Torch has only one compressed fuel, acetylene, and it uses the air around the tip as the oxidizer. You will notice that you buy flash back arrestors in pairs, one for the fuel and one for the oxygen. Single tank torches are not prone to flash backs because once the fuel is shut off there is nothing that can continue to burn. We hope this answers your question, but please let us know if you have any others.

Great video but I have a question that how long can we keep on using that burner or torch?I mean can we keep on igniting it for hours or do we need to give it a rest?it is dangerous to keep it on ignition for hours because it could get too hot or can we use it for as long as we want?

I’ve had this kit for several years now. It used to sound and look exactly like yours. I didn’t use my tank or torch for a couple years and it was left in my shed. I replaced my tank at the local shop and now ever since then, I go to light it after opening the tank and torch (I hear the gas coming out) and it is a yellow/orange fluffy and sooty flame. Little spot worms come out with the flame. It used to look and sound just like yours with the right blue flame. I won’t use it because of this. What am I doing wrong? Psi set to 12 and followed all the steps to a T

Thank you for the question. Here is a response from Phil in our tech team: I would try another tip to see if that tip is possibly clogged. Also if the tank was lying down it could have acetone that has leaked into the regulator if it wasn’t sitting up for several hours before use. If the tank is low in fuel that could also be an issue. A fluffy flame indicates low pressure. If the torch has been sitting, the tip could be dirty or clogged causing a decrease in pressure.

what about flashback arrestors? are they not necessary on this torch for some reason?
@RioGrande1944
@RioGrande1944 8 жыл бұрын
Hey there, +rooster kliewer! Thanks for reaching out :) The flashback arrestors aren't necessary for acetylene because only 1 gas is being used and little pressure is required to draw it back into the hose when turned off. You can definitely add the flashback arrestor to the Acetylene Air kit, though. The flashback will fit on the regulator. Does that help? Let us know if we can provide any more info!

@riogrande356

Hi Julie - Great question! This is a torch that uses Acetylene as the fuel and it draws atmospheric air through small holes at the base of the tip to use as the oxidized.

Thanks, Mark. Today I noticed that my left gauge (pressure in the hose) was at zero but the right gauge (how much acetylene in the tank) was reading full. I thought I had bled the lines so that both needles were at zero last time I used the torch but panicked when I saw this today. What did I do wrong??
@RioGrande1944
@RioGrande1944 5 жыл бұрын
Hi. Typically it’s possible that the tank wasn’t closed all the way. Some tanks ( especially “B” tanks) can be tough to fully close all the way an gas can seep into the regulator. So try closing it a little tighter to see if It happens again. You might find that the next tank you get will be a easier to close all the way… it varies from tank to tank. -Mark

Hi I just got my handi heet torch. The base of the tips have holes in them, is it normal that gas leaks out from it? I tried checking it with the fluid and there are bubbles coming out. I just want to confirm
@RioGrande1944
@RioGrande1944 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's normal. The holes at the base of the tip are where the atmospheric air enters the torch tip and mixes with the acetylene to produce the flame. When the acetylene is flowing a slight amount will come out of these holes, but once the torch is lit, the air will keep any flame from coming out those holes. Hope this helps!

What happens if you forget to loosen pressure valve when turning off the torch and when you go to turn it on again the pressure was already tight. This happened to me but I only had my pressure set to 5 psi. Is the regulator damaged ?
@RioGrande1944

there shouldn't be any damage if the regulator is still holding pressure. Damage to the regulator would occur over time if you’re not releasing the pressure on a regular basis. Hope this is helpful!

After shutting everything down as described and bleeding the lines, the gauges read zero. When returning the next day, the gauge closest to the tank shows pressure while the other does not. What is going on here? Is it a faulty tank releasing gas to the regulator?
@RioGrande1944
@RioGrande1944 6 жыл бұрын

Hello Ashley. Mark says that when testing for leaks you can still get small bubble that stick to the surface of the hose and other components due to surface tension. I just purchase this kit and am having quite a bit of trouble getting the regulator to stick straight out once screwed on. Currently, when I attached the regulator the nut is snug to the threads, yet the gauges are drooping/not sticking straight out and rotate around, falling forward and backwards. I am wondering if there is potentially something wrong with the regulator or the tank or if I am doing something wrong. Is the entire tapered end up to the hexagon ring of the regulator actually suppose to fit inside the opening where the gas comes out or just the tapered end? Thanks for the help.

What happens if I use propane?
@RioGrande1944
@RioGrande1944 7 жыл бұрын
The SilverSmith acetylene/air torch is not compatible with propane. The orifices in the torch tips require much higher pressures than a propane tank can push which can be very dangerous. The torches that we carry that can be used with propane are: Smith Little Torch: www.riogrande.com/Product/Smith-Little-Torch-Propane-or-Natural-Gas-and-Oxygen-Set/500027 Swiss torch: www.riogrande.com/search/go?w=Swiss%20Torch Meco: www.riogrande.com/search/go?w=meco And for casting, this product: www.riogrande.com/Product/Smith-Propane-Casting-Torch-System-for-Platinum/500324 It really all depends on what you wish to use it for. The Little torch is not recommended for large jewelry objects or for casting anything over a couple ozt of silver. If you have questions about this, we recommend contacting Rio's Jewelry Tech Team. hey can be reached at 800.545.6566-7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mountain ... Monday through Friday (ask for our Jewelry Tech Team). If this torch were hooked to a propane tank; simply it could cause a serious problem. Using this torch with propane could cause a flash back and an explosion.

I have noticed you are doing wrong three things; First you should open the valve on tank for one second to blow out any dirt before instaling regulators because this dirt can come and stuck into regulators. Second, you are opening the valve on tank to quick so you can damage the regulator gauges. Third the igniter you should put sideway and not in front of torch when igniting.
