Man City win the Champions League and the question for Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle and Chelsea is. How do you stop Man City dominating for years to come? Mark Goldbridge reacts.

Pep has set record points tallies and made it so if u lose 2 games in a season the titles probably done. Pep has been a midtable slender for years. The guys just another level. That's how it has always been Mark. The reason United were that successful was because of the money. They could buy almost any players from the league and they broke the British record 6 times under Ferguson. The youth players are also because of the money because you had the best training facilities in the country and could attract the top talents. These days transfer fees has gone through the roof so people forget the 36 mil paid in 2002 for Rio Ferdinand was like the Neymar deal to PSG in the Morden era.

I agree that the City story isn't a fairytale but I think you could say the same thing about United in the 90s. Man Utd executives, along with the other big clubs and Sky, pushed through the Premier League in 1992 to make sure that the 'big clubs' hoovered up all the money. It was a dodgy bit of financial manipulation that I'd argue had more of a negative effect upon football than City's manipulation. Once the PL began, Man U then benefitted from being the first in the door and winning the first title. They then were rewarded the riches, way more than anyone else had. The financial inequalities between the top and everyone else dwarfed that from the 80s. So they were able to buy all the best players from around the league and dominate. This 'football heritage/history' that Man Utd fans can tout about continuously, in a way of belittling current city success, borne from bitterness and confused righteousness, is actually just financial manipulation from the early 90s.

Apart from Haaland and maybe De Bruyne, City bought no elite level players. Yes, they costs a lot of money and there are a lot of them. It was Guardiola who transformed them into superstars. I don't like Mark's take on this at all. I'm an Arsenal fan and yes I felt that Man City had numerous advantages compared to us last season but I can't just pin it all down on money. We saw Inter Milan, a team that all over probably costs as much as Grealish, be the better side and almost beat Man City and that's down to passion (something that goldbridge has dismissed). Also, as in life, it's meant to be that way, some teams are expected to be richer than others but you should make the most out of it. Man City are making the most out of their wealth and United aren't making the most of their stature and resources which is also wealth (they are just awfully run). If every team is wealthy then we should stop playing football and if that's the case you could find out that probably Man City are still better because they are run better.

So it is not Man City's fault that they are successful, it is every other club in the PL's fault; Chelsea are ran terribly, Liverpool don't get funding, Tottenham are ran terribly and Arsenal are bottle jobs. We’ve seen over the years that Pep and City can get it wrong a few times a season (for example the Brentford losses), but this doesn’t happen more than 5-10 times a season (including cup competitions). To beat city in a cup competition, you only need to be the better team on the day (or over two days). But to beat them in the league? Be the better team over 38 games. Mark is right but having money is the secondary issue, the primary point is .." Spending money well". This is the point that should be emphasised, not the secondary point. Brighton is where they are because they have sent money well. Atletico Madrid is another one that spent money well in the past ....

How did City "buy" the Champions league? Are you saying that they didn't earn any of the titles they won this season? If so, how did City do that with Chelsea spending close to a billion and BARELY survive relegation? Is Chelsea's money worth less than City's?

I think Liverpool will probably be the only team in the world who could match City and stop them winning further titles. In fact, Liverpool shld have been the champions last season if not for the dubious Villa defenders conceding 3 goals within 5 mins. Chelsea could also be another team that can stop City especially now the manager is Mauricio. Actually a lot of people expected Liverpool to beat City to another title but due to some unforseen circumstances where there was 'disharmony' in the team, City were miles in front of every team not only in England but also in Europe.

Its up to the rest to build a model in a similar way cos they have shown how it should be done in this era of football. As a Villa fan i look and have to admire what they have achieved. Its taken them years to mould it into something that is hard for others to challenge. Money and using it in a way that had a target from the outset, building year on year growing stronger at each level of achievement. There is no quick way IMO, all the different elements have to be in place from the start and then just keep adding and adding more to sustain it. So bloody hard but they have shown it can be done. Its up to the rest to try to emulate that. Elite owner, elite business people, elite management and coaching, club structure, ground building, elite players and academies either to sell or keep and fans who believe in the plan. There are a few clubs who may consider themselves being able to achieve this but it wont be in the next five years i dont think . Well done i say. UTV
